I moaned at the length of Doyle's contract. I am happy with what we've offered Robson. More than anything he may be the type of character who will demand more from some of our players who in some games have looked less up for it than the opposition.

Agreed. He's also be the type of player willing to take a bit of responsibility on the pitch. For all the criticism of Quinn, we've missed someone with an appetite to always make themselves available to receive the ball.

My only worry is that he has been playing in the MSL and so will not have the fitness to start. It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see him for a couple of weeks

Back on topic (and probably on a racially-stereotyped theme), Jordan Slew has gone to Rotherham. Rather have him then Forte? I know I would but we obviously can't compete with Rotherham nowadays.

I thought Lowton was much less than that (less than £1m the rest depending on appearances etc) but I still take your point SUFC never let players go cheaply.

He got 3 goals away v Barnet in 2008, 3 more v Charlton last season.

As for Stones, I will predict now that he'll have a much better career than Lowton - I fully expect Lowton and Villa to be in the Championship next season. Moyes has got a bargain there for £3m IMHO. If we'd sold him for that price this message board would have gone berserk.

I'd agree with that.

Forte and Murphy are both wide forwards with Kitson/Porter doing the dirty work and a midfield 3 of Doyle, Robson and KMac would give the latter the freedom to strut his stuff further up the field where there'd be no lack of options with Murphy and Forte.

The downside to that is that it can easily get boxed into a 4-5-1.

Hi Metal, don't want to appear an ITK-er but I was talking to a bloke who is a good friend of the Lowton family who said it was £2.7m (although if they knew of any Machiavellian-type clauses, I don't know). What was also interesting was his salary at Villa - just £4k a week).

Still on Forte (maybe this thread should have been called 'Forte Shades of Grey'? ), a few years (maybe 5 or 6) we were at home to Reading. At half time, Reading had their subs and a sub goalie on and they were doing a serious set of routines. Forte - who was one of our subs - spent the whole break leaning on a dugout chatting to a mate in the crowd. Small stuff, but sums up why we are where we are.

I would invert the triangle and let both Robson (or Whitehouse) and McDonald bomb forward with Doyle holding back.

By all accounts Robson has been described as a box to box midfielder previously, don't know if he's suitable/adaptable enough to switch to a holding role, like McCall did.

On the day we played Stevenage (not play offs) at Bramall Lane last season I had been to watch Barnsley vs Brighton earlier in the day. Stones came on as a sub and immediatly caught the eye, lots of energy and his athleticism reminded me of Steven Gerrard's. He looked comfortable on the ball too, so not surprised he's joined a big club.

But as Beckham said yesterday when someone asked him had he lost any pace. He said he never had any in the first place so it wasn't a problem. So maybe it's the same for Robson. So he should fit in well here with the pace we play at.

Have to agree JD. He's also 5 years younger than Lowton so Everton are paying for the "potential" as much as anything.

I know people are furious about what's happening but let's have some perspective. Not every deal we've made is bad business.

to be fair we signed back Billy SHARP and sat back and waited for the glut of goals and got 8 in 51 so he got for us the same ratio Forte has, , in Fortes defence a large majority of his "games" are as a 5 /10 minute sub , so its a bit misleading, as was Sharps who half of his games werent full 90 minutes#
I remember Fortes debut in the cup at forest, and he was like a whippet , but as others have said at that time he got little opportunity as we had an array of options
