Conclusions from the Inter friendly

As was said last season, and is being said again; we need a young, mobile, muscular physicality up top. The type of player who if bought would cost a lot, but who is available from the youth/u23 ranks of 6 or 7 premier league clubs on loan. Akpom, Nketiah, Abraham, Mousset, Nmecha, Armstrong, DCL tick some of the boxes.

Although they started last night together, I don't see Clarke & McGoldrick as an ideal partnership. A number of times good balls were put through and no one got on the end of them or the defenders weren't able to be closed down quickly.

The main thing for me is how we desperately need to replace Brooks, and still lack pace and creativity.

Funnily enough, you could argue that if we had Brooks now, we wouldn't need any more signings. And we would've only spent the Egan fee. But apparently it was absolutely necessary to sell Brooks....
Agree with this . All round it was very encouraging, but we lack a bit of snap.

I noticed that Henderson pulled off a great save to keep us in the game, did any of the players go over to him and pat on the back/slapped hands/crunchy fists...anything no, this worried me as a lack of team togetherness and spirit.

My thoughts for what they are worth,I would like to see cw try with duffy and Holmes just behind magoldrick against Donny ;)

I think that loans will be the answer. Not ideal, but sensible given the type of players we are after.

I do wish we were more willing to look abroad though. I don’t think we’ve got the network to do that effectively and it would be an advantage.

If I were Wilder, which I’m not of course, I’d see if we can release Joao from the stench of S6 and sign him on a permanent. He’s got pace and trickery (which we don’t have much of) and he can score goals. They are desperate to unload players and he’s not exactly been well treated there. I think he’d cross the city, as many others who have seen the light, have done before him.

(Few have gone the other way incidentally. I wonder why that is?).

Like you say you can’t really read anything into a friendly but for what it’s worth... I thought the performance was very much the same as last season, we pressed the ball high for the first 20 minutes with nice sharp-quick passing across the back and in midfield and it looked pretty good at times (like last season) then it became slow and predictably (like last season) We still don’t have that special player in midfield, we still don’t have a quick winger or that special player up front who will score the goals! worryingly going forward we looked very pedestrian no pace with no goal threat. No one wanted to shoot (like last season) only Fleck looked like taking on a defender! so basically nothings changed! we haven’t brought in that game changing someone who will get us excited or that player who will score us the winner In a tight game. It ooks like we ain’t got no money and no ambition (like last season) I hope I’m wrong but I thinks it’s going to be a very long season :(

Agree with rest of your post, but with regards to the above we DID just break our transfer record and by many reports were ready to spend up to 5m on Waghorn :) I know it’s pocket money compared to Stoke, Forest, Boro etc but this is arguably the most ambition we’ve shown for 15 years. I think we’ll be fine, just probably more likely to be 8-10th again (with current squad) than top six.
