As this is my 50th season as a Blade, I have been comparing it to our best performing seasons over the last 50 years. Over that time this is the fourth period that we have been in the top flight, and so I have taken our best season from the other three periods to compare with this season. Those other three seasons were 74/75 under Furphy, 91/92 under Bassett and 06/07 under Warnock. For Furphy and Bassett these were 42 game seasons, so for those seasons I have discarded our results in the 4 games against the bottom 2 teams - making it a standard comparison of results against the top 20. Also, for 74/75 I have converted to 3 points for a win.
As you can see below, this season has very much mirrored 74/75, with the 2 lines crossing on 7 occasions. Had we held on to our lead yesterday we would have finished on exactly the same effective points (57). However, finishing just below our best season in the 70's and just above our best season in the 90's is probably our best performance so far in my seasons at the Lane, as this was just our first season back and 74/75 was our fourth season in the top flight and 91/92 our second.
A new keeper, the same back 5, Berge sitting behind Fleck and Swift and a new clinical partner for Oli and we'll be above all of these lines next year.
