I've been a huge Clough critic and although his post match interview was cringeworthy he was right on many of his points (moans).
He picked up on our defensive frailties from corners claiming we've been working on them all season. Surely playing two center backs who have had 10-15 years experience in defending them would have been a start.
A few players let us down last night, mainly coutts and Holt but other than that I was really proud of our passion and work rate, even our (dare I say it) POSITIVE approach.
My biggest concern is injuries, scougall can be replaced- the midfield is already lightweight as it is. The brayford injury is huge though, we can't afford to draft Basham in as was evident last night- the man NEEDS TO govern the midfield, but without him in there what do we do? Anyway I'm being negative again...
I came on here to tell you of my blind optimism, I don't know where it comes from but I genuinely believe we'll turn it around Monday night! Clough will pick two up front, play done from the beginning, give Flynn and Murphy some freedom and I think we'll get a result.
1 game season now, hope we turn up for it.

The midfield and defence are huge problems. He really needs to throw Collins in as we need Basham in midfield. To say we have so many of them, our central midfield is dreadful. We need to win that battle or we'll lose at a whimper.

Other than basham they are all similar type players.
The more I think about it the more the back four AND the midfield are a problem now.
Did I hear right that away goals don't count for anything?

he literally has no choice but play Collins, surely he wont play young harrison..? we still have to believe, stay united.

So he plays Collins.......if he has a good game that's fine, but if he plays badly where does that leave us?

Well it leaves us in the shit, Clough out of the job and some of the best supporters in the land having to watch league 1 bollocks again.
If Collins does have a good game though won't we all be pissed off that he didn't recall him earlier?

Also, Harrison makes McCleverley look like Bobby Moore.

Haha hey it's a one off game now, we just need to win.
1-0 gets us to extra time, 2-0 sees us through.
We don't deserve to go up if we can't beat Swindon in such a big game.

I actually think we've got a decent chance on Monday, as we know we can't just sit back, we've got to go forward and attack, and we are best when we do that. The man referred to by the OP could be Che Adams. I agree, get Collins in if Brayford's definitely out, Cover Done in cotton wool over the next few days, and maybe even start with him Monday. Get the goals needed and he can go off.

That's correct. They scrapped the away goals rule for the play-offs years ago, because in the event of Extra Time in the second leg, the away team (IE the team that finished lower in the league) would have an extra 30 minutes to score away goals, which is obviously unfair.

...and the playoffs aren't...? (Preston playing Chesterfield after finishing 20 POINTS above them)

Well indeed. But yes, it was decided that away goals was just *too* unfair on the side that finished higher.

I will of course be there with many others on Monday evening cheering them on till the end but realistically Utd's chance of getting up is all but gone. The referring decisions, whilst some were highly questionable, were outside of the club's control. However, other decisions i.e. that substitution at half-time (thereby handing over total control of the midfield by moving Basham) and the less reported lack of support for Harris following his first half booking resulting in Byrne being afforded far too much space, especially for the 2nd goal, were very much in NC's sphere of control, both of which he failed miserably to act upon.
Whilst I'd love nothing more than us nicking it down there, even if it has to be via extra time and pens, I am afraid I can't see Swindon failing to score at least once given the fragility of our defence and ineptitude of our midfield once Basham is removed from it. If so, the chances of Utd scoring 2, 3 or 4 are remote so it looks like yet another season in L1.
As bad as that sounds, another season in L1 watching NC's own brand of try not to lose football is too much to bear thinking about at this time.

Realism is a bad word. In a sense everything is realistic. I see no line between the imaginary and the real.

Previously I'd thought he wouldn't be sacked on the back of a failed play-off campaign. But if we go down limply on Monday, I really do feel he might be let go.

If we don't go up and he stays, he better be prepared for immense pressure next season. Will make this season look like a walk in the park. There'll be no room for error whatsoever.

Well surely we can learn from yesterdays game leave basham in midfield. make sure done is in from the start just hope brayfords ok our problem seems also to be we go a goal up but never seem to be able to build on that lead. we end up drawing games or even losing them letting aweful goals in .in the closing minutes the positive we do have is weve had good away results even though we did lose to swindon earler in season but its a fresh start monday no room for error

Any news on Brayford?

“Scouggs is out, yes,” Clough said. “It’s his hamstring. John maybe.

“That’s Stefan’s season gone now. Even if we were still in the season itself, he’d be looking at three to four weeks. It’s all about, for him, getting ready for pre-season.

“John, we’ll see how he is.”

I share your optimism fella Done and Davies has got to start Bash has got to be in midfield, Mceverly and Collins if possible center defence, Doyle got to start.
Holt and Coutts got to be binned sorry they are none runners.
We started well last night really up tempo same again please.

Why do you think Clough will learn anything from yesterday? He's demonstrated all season his obstinate streak of I'm always right he isn't going to change now and Basham will be a centre back at Swindon if Brayford isn't fit.

Am heading to swindon on Monday with no expectation of anything, but frankly they have to go for it, and all they need is one goal and suddenly it is game on.

We needed a lead from the first leg, then we could have quite legitimately applied the tactics we used against Spurs and Bristol City.

Having to "have a go" at them, well our midfield isn't designed for that I can see those Swindon players running riot through there.

3 : 1 to Swindon on the night is my prediction.

There must be a bit of sense in there somewhere ? We can only hope.

I also agree with your optimistic view. However Clough is a creature of habit and will stick with the same side ( if Brayford is fit ) , with Baxter in for Scougs on the bench.

He cannot play 442- the midfield is not mobile enough , he has admitted that Davies and Done do not compliment each other , Couts and Holt are the new McGovern and OHare.

I do believe we will win , but =

If you ask whether there is justice in the world , you will have to be satisfied with the reply. Not for the time being , at any rate , not until after Monday. It is written that i shall be loyal to the nightmare of my choice .- Mr McCabe.

UTB

We will play well and get a result. The result will be Swindon 4 - 0 Blades.
