Blades lost 3-1 at Spurs in the penultimate game of the 1955-56 season which confirmed our relegation to the 2nd division. Every Blade player would have been feeling gloomy but Colin Grainger got a nice surprise in receiving the below telegram. He scored two goals in England's 4-2 win against Brazil

Was he a Blade still at that point? Where do Tottenham enter the equation?

United were at Spurs for the game - hence the telegram was sent there.

You sometimes see mention of the Brazil game today. Invariably they say that England won 4-2 and Man Us Tommy Taylor scored twice. I have never seen any media mention of who scored the other 2 goals.

Scores our 2nd and 4th goal

Brilliant clip. Interestingly Brazil were "brilliant individuals" two years prior to their first WC win. Great goal that second one from Colin.
Book is called Match of my life I think. And BBC missed first Brazil goal..lol..not as bad as ITV missing Gerrard v USA in 2010.

Just read a decent mail online article, with an 83 year old Colin interviewed in a video about his memories. England's only survivor now Hodgy's dead. 83 now Col.

England's only survivor? Roy Bentley from the 1950 World Cup squad is still alive also four from the 1954 squad (Ivor Broadis, Wendy's Albert Quixall, our Ted Burgin and Harry Hooper- his dad captained us in the 1936 FA Cup final)

Yes, he carried on playing for the Blades in the second division but got rough treatment from the opposing defenders. Went to Sunderland in Jan/Feb 1957
Vaguely remember coming home from junior school and listening to 2nd half on radio.International matches were played on the afternoon, floodlight matches were just starting to become part of the football scene.

See the mail online article,it says Grainger is the only one alive from the Brazil game in 1956..which, if Hodgy didn't play, means all the others died before 2013 when article was written.

Funny thing is I saw the highlights of that game as a young lad. I had a vhs cassette with the history of football in Brazil from about the 1930's onwards. That game was on it and the only reason I remember it is because Colin's Grainger of Sheffield United was mentioned.

I see thanks
