Having retired this year, one of my farewell presents was a United home shirt, from last season unfortunately, but beggars can't be choosers. All my colleagues signed it, then I managed to get Joe Root's signature and finally all the United squad plus Chris Wilder. So, it then needed framing, so having phoned round Harrogate companies and getting quotes from £70 to £250, I obviously went for the £70 one. So off I trot this morning to a little framing place in a back street and gave this bloke my shirt. It will look something like that one on the wall he said, the only framed football shirt on display. Yes, it was a Blades shirt circa 2009, play off final. Not that I wanted to be reminded of that of course. It turns out the owner of the shop worked with one of United's back room staff who lived across the way and had donated the shirt. Small world eh?

The prices of framing shirts is ridiculous, got a couple I'd like to get sorted myself.

Mmmm that's given me an idea for a little business when I retire.

Serious question Northyorks, what would be a reasonable'pot' to have if retiring at 65?

Depends if you want to continue the vast amount of drinking, eating out and holidaying in expensive places that I do now I am still working.
I'd say an income of around £100,000.00 clear which at todays rates of return means ............ forget it mate. If I make the next three or four years to retirement Skeggy, White Lightning and McDonalds will be welcoming me with open arms.

At the risk of appearing fuckwitted, what is so frighteningly complicated about framing a shirt.
All you do is decide if you want the front or the back facing outward. Fold it right. Lay it on the frame. Put the glass in,push down the staple things and hoy it on the wall.
I'll do them for anyone for 50 bar delivered.:)

I used to live in Bristol and at the end of my street was an opticians with a Gareth Taylor Blades shirt proudly displayed in the window. Always a pleasant sight

I retired from my institution in July and I too got a Blades shirt (this season's) with my name and the number 1889 on the back. Love it and will never put it in a frame.

Oh dear, now you are asking! You can expect to live another twenty years. You would need a decent amount in savings for emergencies, new car, holidays etc etc. Your house would be paid for, but you still have all the normal bills, so your income would need to be, say 70% of what you are earning when you retire.. The more you can put into a pension as a young person the better. I don't know your life style so it's hard to say. I came out of my job, with no work pension, but I had a couple of private pensions, an Army pension, the better half had a couple of private pensions and obviously state pensions. Nevertheless, we are already dipping into savings, but that is down to expensive holidays, two football and two cricket season tickets etc etc. You can never have enough pension or enough savings. Does that help?

The first quote was £70 and I thought ridiculous. But as each quote got higher and higher, suddenly £70 sounded reasonable. Mind you, it might be a load of rubbish!

No Trig, they just keep on going.......

Jethro Tull was the first band I ever saw live in 1969 and that opened up a whole new world to me. It's good to see the salmon farming highland laird from Blackpool still going strong.

Briefly, as NYB says, assume you'll live another 20 years after retirement. You'll get 5% of your pot per year, so multiply your required annual required income by 20 and that's what you'll need. So, for £20k, that's a pot of £400k.
