I'd suspect it'll all be down to margin. Cost prices per kit would be higher I suspect from someone like Adidas with their brand value than Macron with theirs. They'd rather sell 5000 crap shirts and make £20 a chuck than 9999 good ones and only make £10.

I can't believe that the Pigs get Puma and we get some second rate unknown cack!

Wednesday sell a lot more shirts than us though so it only makes sense that they have a bigger more well known kit maker.

We'll probably only ever get a recognised name like Puma, Nike or Umbro if we have a prolonged stay in the Premier League.

That maybe but at least Puma, Nike, Adidas etc are good. Macron is bloody awful.

Fact 1: Fans will buy 1000's of well designed Nike / Adidas shirts
Fact 2: Fans will buy very few of Macron or Avec's kack
Fact 3: Nobody at the Lane has ever had the sense to see this

I feel the hand of a controlling dinosaur behind the scenes somewhere.

I disagree with this to be honest.

Sheffield United shirts have a very small customer base (in relation to MU, Liverpool etc.). I would say that outside of Sheffield United supporters the demand is virtually nil.

So you know exactly who your target market is.

Out of this target market there are three kinds of customer.
1. They will buy the new shirt whatever simply because it's the new shirt.
2. They NEVER buy the shirt.
3. They WILL buy it if they like it

So your target market is now down to category 3 above.

Find out what this kind of person is looking for when doing the design (like the old vote in the program but being more selective of who you take notice of) and quality. Quite some effort and quite time consuming (probably).
I just think that most people are in categories 1 and 2 so it becomes a lot of effort for little gain.

Exactlty. And factor in the probability that your Nike or Adidas will want a larger slice of the proceeds as they have a bigger and shinier 'brand'. That brand will bring in more sales from category 3, but in no way guarentees enough extra sales to cancel out those higher dues.

Down to their superior suport though, right Pete.

Superior support is matter of opinion.

However, it is a fact that they have more fans than us. I live in Barnsley and I see people walking about with Wednesday shirts on all the time but I don't recall ever seeing anybody wearing a United shirt.

They will also have more fans than us living outside of South Yorkshire due to their years in the Premier League.

Guessing a good many of them will have popped their clogs by now Peter.:D

(but why is 99% of the stuff in our club shop absolute tat) Maybe made in China?

I can't comment on the number of Pig shirts in Dingleland but there have been far more Blades shirts/car stickers etc than Pig ones on show in Sheffield for years. Average attendances in recent years also suggest we have more true fans - half of theirs only show up a couple of times a season.

I love this theory that because something is cheap and made in china then = tat

I went to China and if this was the case then surely the whole country would be ready to Implode.... It wasn't, it didn't and it hasn't...yet at least... In fact I hope it doesn't else i'll have to edit this comment

I think average attendances in recent years show the exact opposite.

All our fans have crawled out of the woodwork thanks to the one season in the Premier League and are now slowly dwindling back down. Wednesday have maintained good attendances every season for the past 10 years despite them being absolutely shite and getting relegated to League One twice. They even averaged more than us when they were in League One and we were in the Championship.

Although I do think our kit is of poor quality I agree with the limited market theory. I am not a "shirter" however, I would buy one if I like it. A particular favourite being the ne a while ago when no-one wanted to sponser us and we just had "Blades" on the front. I bought the white one because I liked it. We definately order in odd sizes though.

I do however want to buy the shorts for footy/gym. They simply do not compare to say the Nike Brazil ones I have or even the relatively cheap Nike "no team" ones available.

I would also like simple, 100% cotton t-shirts for the gym, maybe even a fleece with a simple logo, but these are not available.

The made in China argument is rubbish. Almost everything we wear is made there or a similar factory be they designer or not.

We've averaged more in the last 5 seasons - which by definition means we currently have the bigger support. This is despite the fact that they constantly get the plum fixtures date e.g. home Boxing Day, home last game - and the size of the Leppings Lane end means they are boosted by some large away followings. We averaged more in one season in the Prem (over 30k) than they did in about 14 consecutive seasons in the top flight, even when they qualified for Europe.

Your determination to stick up for them is bizarre.

Perhaps it's as simple as this. AdibokNibro agree to do United a snazzy range of kits for the next three years. They want fifty grand for it, and will charge the club ten quid per shirt. Macron will pay the club fifty grand for the same time period and will charge the club five quid per shirt. Who would you go for?

I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of it, I just suspect that United have gone for the deal that is best financially for them, without the speculation of how many shirts they will sell being dependent on who makes them. After all, it's hardly as if having Adidas shirts will guarantee we sell shit loads more, is it? We might, but then again, we might have roughly the same levels of shirt sales every year regardless of manufacturer.

You don't understand what I am saying.

Wednesday are going through one of their worst periods in the clubs history and have been ever since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2000 yet during the years since they have still maintained good attendances. On the other hand we have had a good decade but still have only managed to average slightly more than them. They have had absolutely nothing to cheer about for ten whole years and have repeatedly been dragged through the shit yet they still have a good core support with the potential for a lot more. This proves that they have more fans than us.

Do you honestly think we would average 20,000+ if we were relegated to League One? We'd probably be back down to 13,000 again like we were before Warnock took over.

I'm not sticking up for them. I hate Wednesday just as much as the next man.

It's just that I hate it when people seem to be of the opinion that because we are rivals we have to be bigger and better than them in every single way imaginable and whenever anyone tries to say otherwise they get immediately shot down.

It's like the constant bickering over the two grounds. Hillsborough is a nice traditional English football ground that has a lot of history and is bigger than Bramall Lane. If say Norwich or Preston played there a lot of our fans would probably be saying what a great stadium it is and how it's one of their favourite away grounds to visit. But because Sheffield Wednesday play there it automatically has to become an absolute shit hole of a place that is a blight on Sheffield etc. etc. and people are reduced to calling it childish nicknames like a pig sty and stuff. Why can't people just step back, take off their Blades hat for a minute and admit it is one of the best grounds in the country. If we played at Hillsborough and they played at Bramall Lane we would all be saying what a shit hole Bramall Lane is even though we love it as it is now.

It's all just a bit stupid and childish.

It would be nice to see some quality merchandise though, the last two home shirts have been shocking. I bought the LCS one for my neice and she had to hold her arms out to stop it falling off her, the neck hole was enormous.
I then bought the MACRO one for her younger sister the following year and within six months the "Badges, Badges wee don't need no steeenkin Badges" had come off in the washer..
Come on Blades give us quality again!!

our shirts have been pants for years, especially the premiership shirts.the collars were fukin horrible.

i think a lot of fans are forgetting that for the past few years, supporters up and down the country have been complaining about the price of replica kits and how many strips some teams have, its not rocket science is it ,that if you want cheaper merchandise, some thing has to give,i.e. quality of material. if you dont like the new shirts dont buy it,personally i prefer the older shirts with no advertising on them.

oh no ! not the we are the bigger club bollocks again, yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwn, think i will go and slit me wrists

It's also a statistical fact that United fans have larger testicles, and have had since 1976. Bet you didn't know that.
