I mentioned in a separate thread that this was our worst scoreline on the opening day of the season since 1966, when we lost 4-0 at Burnley. Closest was a 4-1 loss to Pompey early 80s I think, but both of these were before I was born. Have we ever had a worse defeat than 4-0 on an opening day?

Also, in terms of debuts for new managers, has there been a worse scoreline for their first game?

I remember going to that 4-1 loss at Portsmouth... what a crap day out that was....Garner sent off, never looked like competing that day... only entertainment was the local nutjob trying to take on a full train-load of united fans outside his own house - outside of which was parked a "white maria" van full of sherrifs - who promptly arrested him (and his wife/daughter/mother... you really couldn't tell which she might be)....

Anyway....

1928 - lost 4-0 at West Ham
1947 - lost 4-0 to Charlton
1954 - lost 5-2 to Everton (at Home)
1966 - lost 4-0 to Burnley
2015 - lost 4-0 to Gillingham.

I'd suggest that the most recent is the worst opening day result since it's the one played at the lowest level of all those games.... at least we scored in the big home defeat to Everton (though we lost the next game 5-2 that season too)!

From memory...

Warnock - Sheffield United 1-0 Portsmouth
Robson - Sheffield United 2-2 Colchester
Blackwell - Sheffield United 0-2 Charlton
Speed - Middlesbrough 1-0 Sheffield United
Adams - Burnley 4-2 Sheffield United
Wilson - Oldham 0-2 Sheffield United
Weir - Sheffield United 2-1 Notts County
Clough - Sheffield United 3-1 Crewe
Adkins - Gillingham 4-0 Sheffield United

Can't remember any recent managers losing their 1st blades game nevermind a hammering like that. Have to go back about 15years to Adrian Heath I believe?

Edit.. Peter has answered that one lol

I can add (not all from memory):

Heath - Pompey 2-0 Blades
Bruce - Blades 2-1 Swindon
Thompson - Coventry 1-1 Blades (Marcelo double-shirt celebration)
Spackman - Blades 2-0 Sunderland
Kendall - Ipswich 1-1 Blades

Our very first game at Bramall Lane also ended in a 4-0 defeat, a friendly against Birmingham St George. Our next game we won 6-1 :D We also lost 13-0 that season!

We lost 7-3 to Lincoln City in the 1915/16 season, 7-1 to Sunderland in 41/42, 6-0 to Newcastle in 45/46, plus the ones mentioned above by Mustela.

Yeah I discounted those because they were in war-time regional league type competitions not the football league... there's another one where we lost 5-2 at Liverpool and then beat Liverpool 5-1 at BDTBL a week later.

Yeh you're right, thought they were worth a mention though as they were much bigger defeats, and BTW, I had to flick through 'The Complete Record' to find them, it wasn't from my own knowledge :D

I knew about the Everton result (though couldn't remember the year)... but had to look the others up.
We conceded 5 or more goals 6 times during that 54-55 season.... and scored 5 or more 3 times. We must have been fantastic entertainment!!!

We lost 4-2 at Newcastle in Joe Mercer's first match as our manager at the start of the 1955-56 season (a few days after the death of our manager, Reg Freeman)

First league home win since Brentford at home last winter? 😬 Got to be nearly a record of days without a home win.
