I agree mate, this has to be a good thing. They're all playing for their futures now, no fucking about. One things for sure, although Adkins as inherited the squad clough left, he as no allegiance as regards them having played for him before. Therefore if they are not performing, or giving 110 % , they will be out on their ear, whoever they are.
Wiz,
Not aimed at you, just a general observation:
Is there any justification for a bunch of Lesgue One players not caring or not making an effort because they don't rate the manager? You might understand it from Pele, Beckenbauer or Platini because they've earned the right - but they wouldn't, because they have pride and class.
Average and worse players have no right whatsoever to say who their manager should be, nor any right to reflect such views in the level of effort and commitment. Who the fuck do they think they are?
Not only is it not acceptable for any professional footballer to give less than 100% it is, as I say elsewhere, disgraceful and supporters should condemn those players as unprofessional, cheating wankers, not turn it into an excuse to blame the gaffer's man-management skills. If any of our players, including those with exotic names have at any time, failed to give everything for the shirt and their own pride in performance, they should be tarred and feathered then run out of town at sundown.
Those who think it's OK for players to exert this sort of power and influence should reflect that it could happen to a manager they like as well as one they don't!
I agree that the board should learn from its mistakes but I don't see why we, as supporters, can't move on.I see your point, Pinchy but don't forget that a lot of footballers are - like too many people - thick and idle. They'll get away with putting in the bare minimum because they think that the worst that can happen is that they'll get moved on to another club. This is where 'management' and 'leadership' comes in. And don't forget one of the most powerful factors in most conflicts - morale. If the manager cannot influence events on the pitch, what is the point of employing one?
Clough had one of the better squads in this division. The wage bill was probably the highest in League One. He had incredible - for this level - financial support. And he had 20k disciples turning up unthinkingly most home games. There really was no excuse for too many performances last season. And there was absolutely no excuse for regularly submitting to the likes of Fleetwood, Crewe, Yeovil, Walsall, Gillingham, Port Vale, etc.
And for those who suggest we should just 'move on, he's gone now', no way. The board must analyse and learn from yet another managerial mistake. And the fans can't look back on NC's tenure with rose-tinted glasses - good cup runs but repeated failure in the games that really mattered. To do that would be the same as saying that Blackwell and Wilson were 'good managers'. They weren't. We deserve better.
