Collectively for Sheffield, Clegg. I'm guessing you're refering to today's news on the cuts of public spending for the city.

Clegg has many hard choices to make and for what he feels is for the best for the country as a whole. Paddy was just thinking about his bank balance!

Brown.

Why make promises he knew he couldn't keep, (apart from to win votes of course) I'm no Tory but it's about time a chunk of South Yorkshire removed the Labour tinted glasses.

Closely followed by Paddy, then Lucifer........................

Regardless of who is to blame, it felt like a dark day for Sheffield.

As is my usual modus operandi with things like this I tend to form an opinion based on no research or background knowledge but the Forgemasters project sounded like great news for Sheffield. A deal of international significance based on our heritage - perfect.

Surely Nissan et al should have been fucked off?

Disappointing re sevenstone as well although the delays that had already happened meant that one was easier to predict happening. Can't McCabe build it with the Tevez money? ;)

Thing with Nissan is it's in the North East-an area which still has the ability to get teams of sentimental hand-wringing documentary producers up there to make films about the evil Tories systematically destroying these wonderful, humourous people and can wheel out some stock footage of ships and the Jarrow March footage again. This actually does make the bad people look a little bad. Sy on the other hand - Orgreave, Flying Pickets, Arthur, Militancy. This makes the bad people get a hard on so, yoink, there goes your investment you dirty little Bolshevik bastards.

Sheffield was always bound to be f*cked by a Tory government.

Re: Sevenstones, its just not viable at the moment.

Clegg has made one hard choice: going into coalition with the Tories. This is a Tory decision, not his.

The early signs are the Lib Dems have little or no say. I will be interested to see how long they stay in if that carries on.

Fine then the torys have hard choices to make for what they feel is the good of the country. You may not like them but they are not fucking people over for a laugh! They'd love to cosy up to places like sheffield to make sure they stay in...like brown tried and failed!

Congratulations on your best post for about 3 years. Very noticeable it contained nothing about Blackwell and a lovely pop at McCabe at the end, brilliant stuff.

I don't think you need to do much research to form the opinion that this Forgemasters thing is a total and utter disgrace. OK, it wouldn't create many jobs but that is a secondary issue on this one as you say and above all else it was a loan carrying a fair amount of interest.

Clegg has already turned into a total joke figure and it's all very sad that Labour couldn't put up a better fight.

Incidentally, did Domenech remind anyone of Blackwell? I'm thinking of inept, hugely unpopular, arrogant, effortlessly wasting fantastic resources, bland, negative etc etc.

You've got to be joking? They (Tories) have no chance of ever winning more than one seat in Sheffield and are more than happy to let it rot. Tories have never won elections on back of support in Sheffield.

You need help mate. Let it go.

I know he did cus we are at opposite sides of opinion on this.

He's a nice guy I'm sure, just a little off track with what it would mean to Sheffield to put the Tory’s in. It didn’t take long to get us did it?

Think the clue is in his name, GB. :D

I'm pretty sure Walthy is Sheffield born, that right Walthy?
I'm pretty sure too, but that wasn't really my point. Walthy seems a decent guy, well-educated and quite funny (I'd probably bum him in another life) but with his political perspective I shouldn't imagine that what goes on with one or two industrial manufacturers in Sheffield (partially also as he lives in Walthamstow) bothers him too much in regards "the big picture".

(Not a slight, Walthy. Although I am making presumptions - correct me if I'm wrong and I'll apologise in advance.)

This is clearly bad news for Forgemasters but (without knowing all the details) I would venture forth the following questions:

1. Why were they relying on government money?

2. Could the Liberals anti-nuclear stance be a major factor rather than Tory cost cutting as this delays (at best) nuclear power?

3. Why is the blame being laid at the new governments door when the last government committed money (OUR money) that it clearly didn't have?

1. Why were they relying on government money?

Everyone else in the nuclear industry does worldwide. The Japanese companies who will be taking this business now certainly will be. It's an area where private business fears to tread without backup.

I don't see why the Tories have a big problem with this. They were quite relaxed about funnelling billions to private train operators on purely ideological rather than economic grounds. And that's not even loans, which the Forgemasters money is.

1 £40bn was going to be provided by Westinghouse - I think they may carry on and do a buy out of Forgemasters or something similar
2 This wouldn't surprise me and I would blame Vince Cable if anybody
3 I agree except that talks with Forgemaster had been going on for two years apparently

Thanks for the explanation Revolution and I agree, I don't see what the major problem was as in the general scheme of things, it was a minor investment and was an investment in a future that is critical to power production. I don't know what the risk was but maybe that was a factor or maybe it will be available more cheaply from somewhere like Japan. The only thing I can see with this is that production is not meeting short term demand and so nuclear power in the UK will be delayed as a result.

It would be good if someone, ideally Nick Clegg, could explain in full via the local media. After all, it's a major company in the city that he represents that's affected and maybe he could shed light on factors that non of us are aware of which justifies the decision.

Nice comparison, ta.

I was born in Sheffield and voted Tory. It's a sad day imho but doesn't change my politics. By next week we are all going to be moaning and the only people who I'll be calling c***s are the people who got us in this mess, namely the banks and certain members of a political party who allowed it.

Come on you financial boffins out there, how much interest will the country have lost by not loaning the money.

Having £80m in a loan for Xyears is hardly going to push us over the edge.
