Depressed folks are often very secretive and don’t reveal to others what their feelings and intentions are. Take Gary Speed for example. He shocked everyone with what he did. These folks usually take sudden and deliberate actions. They don’t hang around in a lake for an hour wondering what to do.

I’m not saying this bloke didn’t/doesn’t have issues, but all of a sudden we seem to have lots of footballers coming out with similar stories. I’m a bit cynical of the motive tbh. Is it about the condition or themselves?

Fancy an actual condition existing where you just get really upset and kill, or try to kill yourself.

Can't be reight, and why do only humans experience this shit? Our brains are fucked up.

On the flip side there are those that are very open about struggling with it, and end up taking their lives anyway. People just express themselves in different ways, some want to talk about it, some don't.

It has been suggested that we are the only creature who is aware of our own mortality and therefore is the only one that ponders our own existence. Whether we consciously do this or not, we aren't the type of creature that just gets on with it and doesn't think about stuff we can't really control.

Add to that all the life events that impact upon us, the inevitable loss of loved ones and living in a world where we are normally judged by our perceived levels of success, there is no wonder many of us crack at some point. Even very pragmatic, down to earth and no nonsense types of folk can suffer.

I think it’s good they talk about it. The more this is normalised the better.

But some folks motivation is not about helping others imo. It’s about getting themselves noticed.

Here's a truism for you. It's perfectly possible to be an utter bellend and suffer from mental illness.

The question you need to consider is how much of the former is due to the latter? Then you can decide how to approach them and their behaviour.

Got the haircut got the tats got the flash motor got the model got the pink boots got the depression, tick the boxes lads

Questioning someone’s motives is not a great way to encourage people to talk about it though is it.

“Depressed folks are often very secretive and don’t reveal to others what their feelings and intentions are” because people seem to have a habit of disbelieving them or stigmatising them. Funny that, isn’t it.

The fact that some footballers have already come out and spoken about mental health problems is what has given others the confidence to follow suit. It’s not copy cat behaviour and it’s not attention seeking. It’s letting others know that it’s okay and not something to be ashamed of. I feel like your comment is exactly the kind of thing that keeps mental health sufferers isolated.

Well I sincerely hope not! I think it’s good that this is out in the open and there should be no stigma about it. I’d like to have seen more about encouraging people to seek help and less about the personal circumstances in this case. If you read any of my comments in the Mental Health thread you’ll see I’m strongly advocating that people should seek professional help.

Is anybody noticing a pattern here amongst our ex players of that era ? Not to mention poor Luton Shelton’s terrible news last week, are we cursed ?

You can't really diagnose depression in animals because a diagnosis in humans requires a list of symtpoms related to subjective experience (feelings of guilt, impending doom, fatigue etc.) and animals can't answer the questions.

However, we can look for signs like anhedonia (inability or difficulty feeling pleasure) or decrease in social activities. And when we look for the outward signs of depression, we see all sorts of similar behavior in the animal world.

Will always the game at BDTBL v Arsenal in the Premier league. We won 1-0 and Nade scored the goal even though the Arsenal centre half tried to rugby tackle him. Then our keeper got injured (can’t remember who it was) so Jags had to go in goal. He made one particularly great save.

Yep. That's the last time I'm clicking a link to The Star website. What genius is in charge of the ad placements? Fucking tragic user experience.
