We are not like deluded, arrogant pig scum ..... they expected to be top of the league this season and simply awaiting the inevitable invitation to play in the Champions League next year.

In contrast; before this season started and having seen the very modest outlay on squad improvement that we had seen during the summer, my mate and I commented that we would be happy and satisfied with a mid-table consolidation this season.

What Tufty has achieved with this squad and the resources that were made available to him is nothing short of exemplary and FAR exceeds the expectations of all the Blades fans that I know.

Last night would normally have left me raging ( as would the Fulham game) but I'm enjoying our football so much that I found it difficult to be too enraged. Yes, I'm disappointed in the recent run of results since Couttsy was assaulted in the Burton game, but I think his loss has affected the players more than we think.

What has been highlighted over the last few weeks is that our first eleven are capable of "holding their own " with most teams in La Liga the Championship, however, once we have to reshuffle to accommodate injuries / suspensions / loss of form / resting players, the squad is “paper thin” and we simply don’t have the depth of squad to maintain consistency.

This “depth of squad” doesn’t happen overnight at this level and will cost a significant amount of money, however, I have the confidence that Tufty can assemble a competitive Championship squad over the course of a couple of years, if he has the backing of the supporters and the promised financial backing from the Board materialises.

To put this in context …… Fulham and Bristol City are both good Championship sides, with some damned expensive players and more depth of squad quality than we currently possess. We were beaten by our own costly errors against Fulham and largely by an incompetent refereeing performance against Bristol City; although a couple of Tufty’s substitution decisions didn’t help the cause and the woodwork was their man-of-the-match. But remember ….. he’s still learning as well and as we’ve been told on numerous occasions, he’s never managed at this level before.

This is the best football I’ve witnessed at BDTBL since the days of Woodward & Currie and I fully intend to carry on enjoying it. I also believe that Tufty has the skills to keep us up and around the play-off places at the end of the season, provided that he receives an appropriate level of financial backing in January.

If he isn’t backed appropriately ( and I’m not advocating spending £20m) then he will not be the man to blame for the season becoming a “disappointment” to us ….. the long-suffering supporters. Tufty is going to make some more mistakes before May, that’s certain ….. but as long as we’re playing entertaining, attacking football rather than the turgid crap served up by Blackwell, Adams, Clough and Adkins …… Tufty gets my backing.

Well said,it seems like a good time to take stock, reappraise the situation and put the recent disappointments behind us.
I’m not a clapper or a doom merchant but I like to look at the positives of which there are many at the moment.
If we were playing like Wendy then I would be worried.

We were so much better than league 1 last season that I expected better then mid table. Always felt confident we’d finish 8th or 9th.

The thing that has impressed me is that win, draw or lose you can virtually guarantee we’ll put in at least a decent performance.

And what’s really weird is you can guarantee the match will be entertaining.

I don't think the squad is paper thin we have had a nightmare run of injuries and still remained in contention. Lundstrum has improved very quickly and Basham can step in for a few games until we have Fleck back. We only have three games before the January window to recruit Coutts replacement and have Fleck back. Both Lundstrum and Basham can defend and pass and Basham can drive and create so all's not lost. We still have the attacking capability with Duffy, Sharp and Clark with other options to change it with Carruthers and Brooks. So looking at the performance yesterday when we had 11 on the pitch we should be ok. So long as we are in contention I think the investment will come. The owners wouldn't look at the South Stand extension if they were not as convinced as we all are as to Wilder's capabilities.

Hey, when you've got the continental tactical sophistication that Carloss brings then the sky's the limit!

P.S. Always had a soft spot for Norritch...

You'd think a Portuguese manager might try and encourage a bit of possession or some shots on goal

I agree with SelbyBlade that the squad isn’t that thin. We’ve got two players per position and plenty that can cover a number of positions/roles. The problems we have faced recently are the same that any team faces: lose two specialists in the same position and you have to start moving players from their best positions to cover, and losing key midfield players can disrupt the rhythm of the team no matter how good the replacement is. Earlier this season we had all six first team strikers injured/unavailable at the same time with no alternative but play one of them half fit alongside a rookie attacking midfielder.

One, two or even three injuries spread across the pitch we can cope with ok, but they’ve come in the most awkward clumps in positions and timing. Does anyone think Wolves would have played Norwich off the park with all their forwards out at the same time?

I expect CW and AK already have a plan for January recruitment to address some of these risks and improve the overall quality of the squad, and hopefully we’ll see some better luck with injuries over the next six months.
