Also had the balls to step up and convert in the first 5 penalties at Wembley before his penalty prowess for us had been established. Porter just seemed to attract a group of haters he couldn't shake, and a level of criticism that was disproportionate to his contribution for us.

Beattie had no talent and was only signed as we had a big pile of pre-printed shirts left when James went to Stoke.

Porter had no heart. He seemed like a nice bloke and I couldn't hate him but he looked to me like he was going through the motions, doing just enough of what he thought a 'proper striker' should do. He had a reasonable touch and scored some important goals, but never seemed to have the drive and desire to succeed.

Sorry if that seems harsh but it summed up the kind of player we were recruiting at that time - 'just about good enough'.

Porter got endless stick for quite a while, for being a bit crap but from what I recall ended on a real high with the supporters. Almost cult like status towards the end. It was quite bizarre seeing all those Porter masks on the M1 heading down to the cup semi final.

He scored some very good goals for us once he found his feet, albeit not enough. I will certainly never forget his performance when we beat Forest at the Lane.

I ever there way a pub league player he’s was it .
How ever he’s made a professional career as a footballer is beyond me , but I wish him no harm and good luck to fella.
I too have memories of him some good and some bad, but it shows how far we have coming and how badly we’ve been managed in the past from top to bottom
