The title is pretty self explanatory really.

I am openly a big admirer of everything that Chris Morgan has done for this football club. He has been involved in all of the highs that our football club has reached in the last decade and had he not got injured and forced to retire I am more than certain that he would still be in the back four for us now, wearing the captains armband and yelling at players to get their fingers out of their backsides as well as giving the younger lads in the squad a bit of motivation and encouragement.

Whether you are an admirer of Chris Morgan or not you have to agree that he has been nothing but a servant of the club since moving here. Everything about him is Sheffield United and I now look at him as equally a die hard fan of the club as he is an employee. He got injured but he wanted to get his coaching stuff underway and most importantly he wanted to do this at Sheffield United, when the opening came about both post Wilson and post Weir, Morgs was there to pick up the pieces and openly admitted that he wanted to manage this club and lead it back to where it belongs.

So this brings us on to testimonials?. You don't get many of those these days do you as loyalty is somewhat a thing of the past in modern day football.........

Anyhow Morg's signed for us in July 2003 from Barnsley and had he not done his knee in most people would lay their house on him playing beyond 2013 and as I said you would have a job on stopping him playing for us now. Players get a benefit / testimonial match for 10 years playing for a club do they not? Or on occasions players get one should they retire or be forced to retire through injury.

For this season I can't see any reason why Chris Morgan isn't eligible for his testimonial? He's still there now at the managers side on the training ground, with the youth team and in the dugout.

What do you reckon? Yay or Neigh?

PS - If you believe Morg's should get his Testimonial then who should it be against?

I voted No, and it is nothing against Chris Morgan, just against testimonials in general. Years ago when Players where paid the same as normal working men, then yes that was fine. Now majority of players earn far more than the normal working man so why. I know it is a short career in terms of working life, but they are young enough when they finish to find another job. How many on here after 10 years with the company they work for, have been given a testimonial, or a lump sum in there hands. How many after years at a company and reached retiring age, have been given a testimonial.
Sorry to me the times of testimonials are long gone, no matter who much a good servant they have been.

You should probably watch this space.

I do believe that Morgan deserves one, however for now can we stick with the program

Monty should have got one too, as he actually played 10 (or 11) years..

Sadly he's not fashionable in some fans eyes.

It's not just a testimonial: it's a chance to attract Premier League (just about) opposition just a week or two before the start of a season and when you consider the fiasco of last year's pre-season, from which we never really recovered, it has to be a good thing as well as a reward for Morgs.

I was planning a dodge over to watch this one. Shame the club you are playing mind :(

I think he should and I'd pay to attend...................if Pinchy gave the honorary address.

Here are the opening lines

Distinguished guests, bladies and gentlemen, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to Chris Morgans testimonial dinner, rarely in the history of this great club has such a gifted football talent such as Chris...........

It doesn't feel like we've had too many since I've been a fan - with even fewer candidates in recent seasons due to the turnover in staff. Was Whitehouse the last one we did a testimonial for?

In answer to the OP's post from last year then yes I think he does deserve one.

He has had to put up with a fair bit of flack over the years. If he was a bit younger and injury free he would still be first choice in our defence. The injury problems he had towards the end of his career was part of the reason we got relegated. A fully fit Morgan would have helped keep us in the Championship.

That said should he stil be part of the staff at the Lane? I am not sure as I think Adkins should be the one to decide.

It will help preseason in a way . The benefit for all is the likes of Newcastle , Celtic , Rangers , always bring a good following , which will lift the attendance .

He deserves the testimonial , but IMO its a bit of a smoke screen and softener , for when he is told his services are no longer required . I have said before , the U21 manager has to mirror the first team manager.

I agree and also they have stonkingly good pensions - now if he gave it all to charity ......

Its a yes from me. Appears that 3 charities will benefit. Its also a chance to say thanks to a loyal man, you don't get too many staying at one club for over a decade anymore.
The Geordies will bring a few thousand and with it being the weekend of Tramlines it will all add to the atmosphere.
Plus, after lasts years awful pre season, we will have a good test at home. (ON THE NEW PITCH!).
Nowt to dislike about this fixture.

UTB!!

Simon Tracey just before the start of 2003-04 v Middlesbrough was the last one I think.

Off the top of my head, testimonials have been held for the following since WWII

1955 Jimmy Hagan
1957 Len Browning (retired through injury)
1965 Joe Shaw
1967 Graham Shaw
1966 Cec Coldwell
1968 Alan Hodgkinson
1973 Len Badger
1974 Alan Woodward
1976 Harry Latham
1977 John Harris
1980 Eddie Colquhoun
1980 Mick Speight
1980 John Flynn
1983 Les Tibbott (retired through injury)
1983 Cec Coldwell (again)
1986 Tony Kenworthy
1986 Tony Currie
1988 Colin Morris
1992 Paul Stancliffe
1992 Brian Smith (retired through injury)
1993 Derek Dooley
2001 Dane Whitehouse
2003 Simon Tracey

I may have missed one or two!

Again from memory...

Wednesday are, not surprisingly, the most favoured testimonial opponents providing opposition for the games for G. Shaw, Hodgkinson, Badger, Woodward, Latham, Kenowrthy, Coldwell (2), Morris and Dooley.

Teams made up of ex United players were the opposition for Flynn, Currie, Smith and Whitehouse and "All star" teams for Hagan, Browning, J. Shaw, Coldwell (1), Colquhoun and Speight. Other than that opponents were:

Harris - Forest
Tibbott - Ipswich
Stancliffe - Malmo
Tracey - Middlesbrough.

Completely forgot about Tracey's. Was that the one where Kozzie played up front?

I guess it's becoming an increasing rarity that players stay long enough to warrant them. Morgs and Monty will have been the last ones that served significant years with us.

Will any of the current squad stay long enough to get one? I'd be surprised.

I think the Whitehouse one was Kozzy up front and he scored 5. I don't think people were taking it that seriously :-)

It seems to be a bit hit and miss as to who gets one. Morris was here for 6 years and Stancliffe 7 and they got one, whereas Montgomery (12 years) didn't.

The current longest serving squad member is Collins with 4.5 years, though you could argue Long and Kennedy have been around longer as I think they signed Academy terms as 16 year olds in summer 2010, but didn't play until the last game of 2010-11.

Seem to remember George Best and Paul Heaton being involved with Currie's
