A new £65m development is being built between London Road and BDTBL, with pedestrian access to the City centre. Is it too much to expect the finely-honed 'business brains' in charge at United will seize on this to United's advantage?

Can we expect a flurry of Chinese-related funnies?

Isn't this just typical Sheffield Council procrastination though?

The Telegraph article is from 2010 and in that it says it has been 5 years in the making, so 4 years later (September 2014 Yorkshire Post) it's still on the agenda.

Only Sheffield Council can see schemes like this and Sevenstones run aground on the rocks of procrastination.

And don't get me going on the reason why Sheffield Council didn't bid on the Tour de Yorkshire - got to let other towns and cities have a chance - bowlocks Julie Dore

I'm pretty sure It's been nowhere near the council until the last few months.

Well I don't know alcoblade as I don't live in Sheffield; it was this bit that made me wonder,

"Already Sheffield is signing a 'sister agreement' with Chengdu in south west China, with the council looking to forge relationships with one of the fastest growing economies in the world."

Your'e not defending the council are you? ;)

I've no reason to defend the council, and god knows why anyone would vote for them. But there's a tendancy to blame the counciil for everything, which makes any deserved criticism less meaningful. They are not at fault here.

OK Alco - if you know better than I do then fair enough.

I think i read that the Tour of Yorkshire thing was down to an agreement which was made whilst the Tour de France bid was being put together. They would focus on major Yorkshire cities for the TDF, but then the TDY would start/ finish in other towns and cities. Also the routes are still being planned ( i think) so there is a chance it'll come through S Yorks as part of the route.

I agree over Sevenstones though. Sheffield is slipping further and further behind now. I intended to comment on the thread that i think Blade56 put up a few weeks ago. But I drove up to Leeds in early december and wow! Its got an impressive skyline now as you come off the Motorway. This is partly due to it being fairly flat compared to Sheffield, so you get the tall buildings reaching for the skies as you drive in, contrasted with the relatively low lying houses and buildings which frame it, but still, looks great.

Sheffield does seem to take forever to get things off the ground and really struggles to gain investment compared to Manchester and Leeds.

Living throughout the world i've seen some interesting cities and the way they build up. Yokohama was great as it basically decided to build a whole new Commercial/ Residential District as its main focal point, it took an old industrial port area and created it. Probably in the last 10-20 years. Think Meadowhall, but with Sky rise Apartments, Offices, Shopping centres, Metro links and parks around it... rather than a 20 year old shopping centre, surrounded by waste land, a retail park and an arena...

Labour are proud to take credit for the way Sheffield has developed over the decades whilst all around us fall into ruin. We held the world student games you know was our last great achievement.

Even Doncaster looks better then sheffield these days and with their railway, airport and motorway links will only go from strength to strength hole SCC block the likes of Next and Ikea because the traffic would come to a standstill

I suppose we should be grateful that SCC has 'allowed' this to go ahead, as it didn't have 'S6', 'Hillsborough' or 'Sheffield Wednesday' in the planning application.

While I love my home city with a passion and am proud of it ,
Whenever I come home I feel as though they have been improvements , after flying into manchester and seeing how
that city has developed in the 30+ years Sheffield seems to be stuck in a rut , reading on various sites how, when
an innovation and people and companies want to come to Sheffield , the council don't seem to want the jobs ,
because of , A , B , or C get the jobs in place get the city moving or be left behind , while reading about
" Next " and " Ikea " was actually embarrassed reading the councils thoughts and the reasons why .
Do you really want all the talk to be about Manchester and Leeds , and Sheffield is an afterthought
Jobs , jobs , jobs get them so people can have some shrapnel in there pocket and spend it local .
( fuck me reading that back sound like that cunt thatcher ) .

I heard Julie Bore say it on a news programme that they had decided to let other towns/cities have a go which is great for York, Scarborough etc, but guess who has a start point again - yes, Leeds.

Cunt Thatcher sounds like an apprenticeship mate...hope you're well.

Agree with your observations about Sheffield in comparison to Mancs, even Leeds. Thing is, Manchester must be the most developed city centre in the UK, especially after the bombing near the theatre, so comparisons are always going to make most places seem shoddy.

I've been on working parties with the council, and they are hard work and quite oppositional where private enterprise is concerned.

There was a prog. on Monday - 'Low Wage Britain' or summat that started in Grimethorpe () and described how ASOS (a low-rent 'fashion' house) had built a warehouse there. 3000 jobs, 'Call Me Dave' hot-footing it to claim the credit. Every job went to Poles or Romanians. And they were being ripped off with zero-hour contracts etc.
And that's a lot of the problem. Places like Sheffield have been allowed to get so down-trodden that these criminal firms know they can set up shop here and treat the 'workers' like shit.

It was all an insurance job to tart up Manchester City centre ;) just annoys me that Sheffield can do so much
more but seems stuck in a 70's mentality at the head of the city not a dyed in the wool capitalist, but a realist ,
wake up Sheffield corporation the major city's of the North are really passing you by .
Ikea opened up years ago in a hole of place off the M50 over here and the whole area has been transformed
they are making a profit hundreds employed there they even built a slip road leading to the store
Alls good mate working shift at the mo going in after walking the dog , ok to PM you later mate

I've not been into Manchester city center much over the years, but did so last year. I have to say, the fuss is lost on me. Don't get me wrong, it serves the retail peupose really well, unlike Sheffield City Center. But it appeared disjointed and messy to me. I went expecting to feel depressed about the state of Sheffield, and actually came away feeling better about it. I'm no doubt in a minority.

It's not Grimethorpe in Sheffield, you know?

As if by magic, the routes have just been announced - its not even coming into South Yorks this time!

Hehe even Liverpool centre looks better than Sheffield, yeah fuckin Liverpool !

Sorry but bwahahahahahahahahaha - Donny is an absolute dump.

Actually Donny town centre pisses all over Sheffield city centre. It might be smaller but it’s brighter and more vibrant than Sheffield city centre – granted that’s not hard to achieve. The Frenchgate Centre in Donny is nothing out of the ordinary but it’s infinitely better than Sheffield’s shopping experience. You take Fargate out of the equation and perhaps the Peace and Winter gardens and you would be forgiven for thinking you’d landed in an eastern block city in the 1970’s.

Thankfully it's not quite as bad over here at the moment , including the Brit , ( yours truly ) we have 4 other foreigners working
here , the last 2have been a disaster so seems to have frightened our firm away from them , I.e they hadn't a fucking clue
what they where up to .
1of our major stores is on the verge of strike action over those zero hours things .
Thankfully there Union seems to be putting up a bit of a fight against it .
Not advocating a greed is good , jobs at any price mentality , decent pay for a decent days work .
You don't live to work , but work to live in my book .
