Chinese Investment in Sheffield

Bit of a weird one this but bare with me.

The deal that Sheffield city council struck that was worth over a £1billion over 60 years is no longer happening

A friend of mine who's worked at the lane for a while told me last summer that the money brought in by this deal which saw a lot of development near Bramall Lane was heavily influencing the princes decision to sell the ground and move away from BDTBL

Maybe now this investment deal is dead that would change things if he was to win?!

As I understand it SCC (unsurprisingly) made a hash of it. None of it was linked to the developments around the Lane however.

Anybody who did any proper due diligence could have seen that the deal wasn't built on firm foundations.

Let's face it, even that Nigerian Prince didn't want to work with the council it's that full of idiots.

It was linked to the sale of the central library building to build a 5 star hotel (which I think was a great idea, by the way). That proposal was met with fierce opposition from certain groups and led to serious scrutiny of the deal being offered by the chinese company in question.

It came to light pretty early on that there were gaps in what the Chinese had put forward, companies that didn't have the wealth they say they did etc.

The deal didn't really get past consultation stage because of the scrutiny brought as part of that consultation, but critics quickly branded it as a Council failure because they hadn't done full due diligence, even though no deal was signed off in the first place and it was still at proposal stage.

The investment would have been used for a range of things had it been forthcoming, starting with a new modern library and that's the bit that grates with me a bit, the old library building is a lovely building but its costly to maintain and would cost a fortune to refurb. Also wheelchair/pram access is via a trades lift at the back.

If it had gone through the new library would have been better than the existing one and a lovely old building would have been refurbed and still of benefit to the city as our only 5 star hotel.

I've first hand experience of working with the Council. The arrogance, the assumptions that they're equipped to deal with experienced business heads, and the overall inability to appreciate that they might be wrong were stand out factors that I took with me. Of course it wasn't a black and white experience, but it became obvious that should they (the Council) ever have to deal with genuine big-hitters they'd be taken apart bit by bit.

A whole one billion...over 60 years? Slough library up the road from me cost that alone. Chucked in a few other things like a small theatre etc but still...a billion over 60 years is hardly "game changing"

They wouldn't supply a piss up and a brewery to the council. Our council are on a pause button ,ask Ikea etc . They are a fucking shambles and have been for decades.

It was a working party for a project that was to receive millions of lottery funding. Feelers had been put out for building companies, architects etc, and almost from day one the problems became clear.

I thought the development on the corner of Bramall lane and this deal was linked. My mistake for not looking into it further.

I was told by someone at the club that the Prince would happily sell the land the ground is on as it worth a lot of money.
