After many, many years of having a season ticket & travelling to away matches, I lapsed a while ago. The reason is that my lad showed precisely zero interest in football. I work very long hours during the week - I currently commute to York every day - and I only really get to see the kids at weekends. So football fell by the wayside for a while for the sake of the family. I really didn't think I'd be back until the kids started doing their own thing on Saturdays, so I became surplus to requirements.

I am delighted to report that the boy, who is now 9, has recently started to take an interest in football! For a while this looked like it might go seriously mammaries aloft - we live in Pigland, and most of his mates are bacon boys. But happily he has decided that despite peer pressure he is a Blade, and today I am taking him to the match! If things go well, season tickets will be had next year.

But I started thinking last night - given what being a Blade entails, in terms of having the ability to seriously screw up your life - if he gets hooked, have I perpetrated an act of child abuse??????

Its better the Lane than to smack his dandies. He'll learn so much more about life but don't forget to tell him there are also positives.

Took Young Fiery to his first match when he was five and he's been hooked since and despite living over 150 miles away still gets to games 25 years on!!

I'm having trouble remembering too many positives!!!! Although the beers in the Cremorne beforehand bring back fond memories......

i take young Bottletree to the games. He is 6 at the moment, but to get him used to the disappointments now can only build character in him for his adult life.

We did warn you. I'm sure he'll be back with his proud to be a Blade Dad.

Bugger!!! He's hooked. Thanks to Lee Williamson. Wants to go again next week.

Take him to Hillsborough, that will really build his character.

Character building. That's what they said at my public school when we weren't allowed a football side as it was too dangerous (some nobody at Forest broke a leg).

Meanwhile the winter ritual humiliation of playing rugby union on a frozen pitch in six inches of snow was "character building"

Character building + United = total disappointment, and has been since 1925.

You can't help but love the buggers though, can you?

My dad and me went to the playoff final and as we were walking back to the station he suddenly stopped, looked at me and said 'I'm so sorry I ever got you involved in this'

Said it all I think

No it didn't! Continue, what happened? Was he was involved with the selling of class A drugs and a rival gang were just about to do you both in?
