Ched Evans - concerned yet?

One thing i find annoying is folks saying its not a worry if he doesnt play and it doesnt work out..............WTH is the point of signing him then? We could have got someone else who at least would have been fit enough to play. There's no room in the squad for folks who earn a wage but never play. Even I could do that.

The clip below posted recently says he is now 95% fit straight from the horses mouth. He should be playing v soon. Time will tell though.

The Evans signing is a real anomaly compared to all the other signing made this summer. Nearly all the players signed are on the up having had good seasons with lower league clubs. It's hard to believe that Wilder looked at Evans and decided that he was the one lower league striker he wanted for a Championship charge. There were clearly other factors at play in this signing.

Having said all of that, it's a gamble that could be spectacularly successful if it comes off. As fans we can only hope he hasn't eaten to big a bite out of the available budget.

Gavlar,

The situation with Ched crops up at many clubs.
Would you take a punt (a gamble) on signing a really talented player with possible injury/ fitness doubts?
First you make sure you backroom team and doctors assess the fitness and use their medical expertese to provide an assessment regards the risk. Second, even though the player might be highly talented you factor in the risk and offer a low salary with performance related incentives.

Sheffield Wednesday recently bought Sam Hutchinson from Chelsea, a very highly rated player with constant injury problems (dodgy knees). Hutchinson is now one of Wednesdays best players and they managed to buy him on the cheap, so that gamble paid off.
We had a similar situation signing the talented Freeman but that gamble failed.

A club with loads of money (In the PL) doesn't need to gamble buying potential or players with injury doubts.
But for us it does make sense, a low cost, medium risk but high reward gamble.
If Ched regains his form then he's the best striker at the club, he's still quite young so it might be in 2018 or 2019 when he starts producing. Obviously Chris Wilder has decided it's a gamble worth taking.

I hear all that mate. I just think, why couldn't we have gone for someone else with less risk? We have no proven Championship strikers in the squad currently aside from Billy and he is the wrong side of 30. You could argue all of our current strikers might end up not being good enough. I hope not and lord knows I trust Wilder, but i'm still concerned.

That clip was the first day back in training and taken about 3 weeks ago.
Ched might have been 95% fit then but he played in the 1st pre season match as and picked up a fresh injury.
So that info direct from the horses mouth is no longer valid, although apparently it was only a hip injury so he can't be far away.
Maybe even if Ched is 95% fit, the club are wrapping him up in cotton wool and being extra extra cautious regards his come back.

Agree, we have strikers with potential but there's only Sharp that's tried and tested in the Championship
But even with Sharp it's not that simple, he's a great finisher but is very reliant in his team mates setting him up.
If we struggle to create chances for Sharp then he'll be pretty ineffective.

Last season the goals came from loads of different players with even the defence chipping in and I think the same will apply next season. I've never looked forward to a season as much because ANYTHING could happen, we are kind of going into the unknown.

I'm guessing you mean Wallace, not Freeman. I thought he was OK last season.

If he gets fit think he'll be a great asset for the team.

Here's a recent poll of Chesterfield fans.

Don't know what the question was.
But if it was who's the better signing Ched or COG.
Then it's slightly mis leading.

I know a Chezzie season ticket who's opinion I value.
He said there's quite a lot of bad feeling from their fans towards Ched
Said they suspect he might have been fit towards the end of the season but didn't want to jeopardise his move.
They reckon their club has been used as a means to ease Ched into league football and maybe the plan was always that he'd return to SU at the end of that season.

Regards Ched he said he produced glimmers of class and you could tell he'd played at a higher level and was too good for the team but he always seemed to be injured, so offered little value to their team and goes down as a failed signing.

watching the Malaga stream I reckon you could see he still has it. Just needs to be fit.

The good thing is it looks like he got the first couple of weeks of pre season under his belt so he isn't playing full on catch up.

Your knowledge of football seems very limited to me ,almost every view and prediction is totally incorrect.
The manager wanted Freeman and Coutts out, he transfer listed them. If it wasn't for our awful start the two might not have played a game.
Ignore that if you like but it's completely true.

Also, is that a little bit pot kettle black or what? Coming from someone who rates James Hanson let me just totally ignore that comment.

Hanson who the manager bought ?

Hanson who the manager bought ?
Irrelevant really isnt it?

Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager in recent memory and he signed Eric Djemba Djemba, Kleberson and Bebe.

Is Wilder also a 'bell' for wanting rid of Coutts and Freeman this time last year?

According to this board, "Coutts and Freeman" is the proof that every player that plays for us will be brilliant this year.

We will have some disappointments unfortunately, and at this moment in time Chedwyn is looking a good bet for one. Hopefully he can turn it around.

Exactly. Coutts and Freeman didn't get locked up for 3 years and come out, have a injury hit unsuccessful season at relegated Chesterfield then return to barely feature in pre season due to injury.

We could sign John Cofie and our fans would say 'just look at Coutts and Freeman'

Who says he wanted rid of them or didn't rate them ? If so he was a bell.Brayford and Done are still in the squad ,and he can change his mind ,you have a variety of reasons for having a player on the list. You however never happy unless you are slagging off a player or something else to do with the club. Evans and Hanson will play big parts during the season ,I will be back to remind you.

You don't transfer list players you want to keep. Luckily no one wanted either of them or they'd have been gone. And you can't blame them, at the time Coutts had done nothing and was probably on a decent wedge and Freeman had just had a mare of a spell at Portsmouth after falling out with Adkins.

If Hanson starts a single game we've had an awful show of recruitment upfront. He and Done would be a decent partnership for someone like Rochdale... Anyone got Keith Hill's number?
