Che Adams £11.2m

Just can’t warrant paying decent championship players 2/3x more than the rest of our squad.
Abroad is defiantly the way forward for me, I bet they’ll be some real gems in the french/Spanish/German 2nd division for half the money of Adams/Long/Maupay

if reports of Adams for £14m to Southampton are correct we would pay £11.2m if we were buying him due to 20% sell on clause - reckon that’d be a solid buy at that price tbh and could make him our marquee signing.

Good player - but I don't like "going back" - and I suspect his "Mr Big" attitude was one of the reasons Wilder wasn't bothered about him leaving in the first place. So, realistic? I don't think so.

In terms of a ‘marquee’ signing we will look for more quality that Che can offer at this time. Granted he’s a good prospect but we need someone to make an immediate impact and ideally someone who can give us a bit of individual brilliance in a few games to make the difference.
This is the reason we have been linked with one person in particular (Ribery) who probably won’t come but it shows the level of ambition in this area.
Also the point about not upsetting the balance of the squad on wages is an important one, that’s usually the reason for dressing room issues at most clubs.
If someone of Ribery’s quality came in on triple the wages the squad would understand why and just look forward to playing and learning from him so this type of signing ticks a lot of boxes for us.

Would be nice in an ideal world. But don't you think that Birmingham would realise we have 20% sell on fee, thus not accepting £14m from us ? Instead saying we need to pay £17m in order to match Southampton (or what ever it would be) ?

No.

We couldn't get much better than Adams.

He's physically a different animal to the lazy fat boy who left us. He's matured personally and as a player. He's properly learned the centre forward position without losing the ability to play as a wide forward. Not only did he have a great scoring record for a limited Birmingham team, but a lot of his goals were from outside the box and created for himself.

He ticks the individual brilliance/matchwinner box. And he'll improve further. Anything around £12-15m is value.

I think Birmingham would ask for more from us. But we have the advantage of potentially outbidding other clubs while paying less and giving Birmingham more.

Chuck in Clarke who would be moving closer to home and surely we can broker a deal. Like you say, won’t be popular with a few but looks a different player to the one who left

I can’t get my head round this one as to why you think they would. It makes no difference. The only thing they could do is reduce the fee and make it more incentive based so they can pay us less. That being said we could also offered them an incentive based deal like the Egan one

No, i think he is saying WE would only have to pay circa £11 million
I don’t.

You need me to explain to you that if Southampton pay £14m, Birmingham will only get £11.2m because they will have to pay £2.8m to us?
Clearly didn't read what I put. Do you need explaining to ? Read the post then read my reply to the post and come back 👍🏻

Southampton could well be a team we need to finish above next season to survive. We don’t seem able to compete with any team financially for players this Summer. The task looks almost impossible to keep us up to be honest.
Last season we had one of the smallest wage budgets and spent very little compared to many teams like Villa, Derby, Forest. Boro etc.. Money isn't everything but it certainly helps and will make it much more difficult if we don't spend. We will need a few more very clever/astute signings like Norwood, Didsy and Egan.

I am confused...

Southampton get Adams for £14m
Birmingham receive £11.2m
Sheff Utd receive £2.8m

Sheff Utd get Adams for £14m
Birmingham receive £11,2m
Sheff Utd receive £2.8m

Whoever pays the rumored £14m Birmingham will still receive £11.2m.... unless I have missed something, your post doesn't make sense.

Cornwall totally agree...we have to get away from this small minded thinking...if we want to compete in the premiership we have to pay premiership wages...that's what all the money goes on at other clubs.

Nobody is arguing we need to sign players on 100k a week but 50-60k is an average premiership wage and if we aren't going to pay that to our best 2 or 3 players weve no chance of competing The 'power houses' that are Southampton, Bournemouth, Palace, Watford, Burnley are paying that to loads of players.
How many seasons have the teams you mention been established in the Premier league to be able to afford big wages, a lot longer than usual I Believe. They have been able to accumalate wealth over a number of seasons allowing them to pay top dollar now .
If we can survive a couple of years at this level then we too can pay the going rate. Catch 22 situation.

The difference is....

Southampton pay £14m
Sheffield Utd pay £11.2m

Birmingham could ask for another £2m off us (£16m), and we'd still be paying less than Southampton, and Birmingham would still be receiving more.

Would be a great signing but can't see us going for him. His Fiance is from Sheffield so I'm sure they would be open to a move back here if we went for him.

That would be a bit sly. If they aren't happy with £11.2 (- any sell on fees) then they shouldn't accept £14m from Southampton
