Charlie Webster on Chris Wilder

King would have fit that perfectly.

No proof that she didn’t raise concerns with King. I’m fairly certain she won’t have been ecstatic with the signing.

The vitriol on here is because she spoke out against a Blades player about one of the most divisive issues that ever happened to the club.

No point kidding yourself that it’s because she did it for self aggrandisement, that’s just how the odd person justifies the ‘slag’ comments.

King would have fit that perfectly.

He was signed relatively shortly into her role. Perhaps she felt better placed to make a stand once she'd been in place longer?

You wouldn't mouth off to the boss after being in the job a couple of months. You may feel more able to challenge him when you'd been there a while.

King had left the club a month before she spoke openly about being abused herself. Given that fact, I don’t think it’s surprising she didn’t come out and publicly criticise it at the time.

Fair enough. Like I said, don't really care at all. Just trying to make sense of the different sides in this.

From what I've read it looks like...

Ched - stupid twat
Marlon - violent twat
Charlie - mouthy twat

Everyone's a twat.

When King signed for us she’d not spoken about the abuse she’d been the victim of. Maybe its fair to assume she didn’t want to share that with the world at that point. King had left the club before she spoke openly about it.

So? She could still take a stand and say she didn't feel comfortable with the club signing King.

Sorry but there are some weak as piss arguments for her keeping quiet on us signing Marlon King. There was a lot of uproar from our fanbase to us signing King especially on here at the time but radio silence from our super fan Charlie.

Anyway like Kuwaiti says they are all twats in their own way.

Just to be clear:

Criticism of her actions is not misogyny.

Rest assured if this post was about Heaton I'd say exactly the same thing as would many others.

The comment calling her a slag is absolutely deplorable and no abuse should be made to anyone.

I agree with the first part of that. However it still doesn't answer the question why she and others didn't resign when we signed King.

In fairness she did speak out about it:

However she still didn't resign.

Charlie Webster was well within her right to do what she did how dare she dare to decide not to be an ambassador of a club actively looking to employ a convicted rapist at the time ***
When she herself was abused ?

Charlie Webster should be celebrated for the charity work and career she has forged

It is quite embarrassing that some cretins have the opionions they do on her

Other than looking a massive hypocrite for fawning over one of the most well know convicted rapists in the world and completely ignoring us signing repeat offender Marlon King (someone who most of us fans didn't want to sign).

Like I say the Ched case was just to suit her own career and to hell with Sheffield United.

She was already a very successful TV presenter in no way was it to advance her career.

She has actively campaigned against womens abuse her entire life do you reckon she’d just carry on been a patron to a club Supprting a rapist just cause she was a fan

She was irrelevant then and irrelevant now. I don't hate her, she was on a long list of people who imo jumped on the band wagon with no interest in looking at the whole situation with a balanced view. I can understand why people would dislike her without it being an issue about women in football.

Judging by the contents of this thread we've still got a long way to go on misogyny as well as racism.

So this is how it works?

If anyone criticizes the actions of a woman it's misogyny?

The notion that Charlie Webster is the villain of the piece is pretty obviously misogynistic. Looked at in the round why would anyone want to attack Charlie Webster?
It's a peculiar football thing that if anyone does or says anything that can be perceived as a slight or attack on their club then immediately their motivations and their actions must be condemned or there must be a suspect motivation. Very quickly the main issues become secondary.
It'll be the same with racism if one of our players (and it almost certainly was with our woman player) or our fans are implicated.
Wednesday fans were the same with Forestieri where the main culprit in the whole affair quickly became the EFL and the judgment could not be accepted for it was.

Odd that she didn't have a problem saying she wanted a selfie with rapist Mike Tyson though. Maybe that was to do with the fact she was working for BoxNation at the time and didn't want to upset her employers? Gotta keep those pounds rolling when it suits her I guess.

Like I say, I won't be convinced that she was not making her stance on the Evans case to further her own ends.

I'd probably be more likely to step down from a voluntary and non-paid role if it conflicted with my interests than I would the job I paid my mortgage with.

You call that "furthering her ends". I call it paying the bills.

I'd like to point out that I have also publicly questioned the lack of female representation in the upper echelons of Sheffield United's hierarchy, which until recently had fitted a very particular demographic.

I'm a terrible hypocrite though, because I still have a season ticket.

In a thread piling in on an abused woman's attitude to a then-convicted rapist, I count two instances of men saying they want to shag her and one calling her a "slag".

Call it what you like.

To be fair I thought the comment I responded to was directed at me and anyone who criticizes her actions . I merely pointed out her relative silence on Marlon King.

I also condemned those despicable posts but it's not fair to lump those in with those such as the ones I've made. (if no one is intending that meaning my apologies)

Again, if this thread was about Heaton I'd say exactly the same thing and indeed I have many times on here and on BM (much to people's delight I'm sure)

Charlie Webster was, and in some quarters may still be, the object of the type of mindset that views women as anything other than human and only worthy of the sort of attitudes that a certain type of male imagines is perfectly acceptable regarding women. It's a parallel of the sort of thought process that regards racism as acceptable, in fact I think that this sort of male considers the rest of humanity, especially those from anywhere outside of their street, road, or wherever they happen to live, as worrying irritants at best, and at worst they regard 'otherness' as completely unacceptable and should not be allowed within the borders of this country.

It's a hard pill to swallow for those who struggle with women or just about anyone different, but tolerating someone else's intolerance's such as the deeply held misogyny that Webster has been on the receiving end of needs to be shown up for what it is, a plague that impacts all of us.

I think she’s an arsehole. Same as Jessica Ennis. I’ve suffered numerous years of hurt following my team. But I never gave up on us. & now i’m enjoying the extremely good times. I hope they are both wishing they never made the stand they did because of certain decisions the board made.

I’ve been unforthcoming on lots of issues until I came to learn and/or feel more confident in stating my position.

Not that my opinion carries any more importance than the next person’s. But the point is that I’m not going to judge anyone else by different standards to my own.

I think Webster had a valid point on Evans. And she was naive on the Tyson tweet. This doesn’t deny her the status of being a fan, or render her a “slag”.

I've got no sympathy for people who want to impose extra judicial sentences or other punishments on former offenders. What gives them the right? We have a legal system and a right to rehabilitation. If these people don't like it, they are free to campaign to change the law, withdraw their support, or move to a country with a value system more akin to their own. In this case the football club acted properly in having a transfer policy dictated by it's own staff, which accorded in every respect with the law and the spirit of the law. It's a shame that we gave into vigilantism in this way; but it was pointed out by the chairmen that the vigilantise were putting our staff's personal safety at risk - particularly the day to day staff at the Lane (mainly female). I'm only glad that the death sentence didn't exist at the time, as many would probably have done the deed on an innocent man. My sympathy lies with Evans who had to put up with not only serving time for a crime he didn't commit, but then facing the vigilantism afterwards (at a time when he should have been enjoying his freedom); the SUFC staff who had to endure undue pressure for wanting to sign Evans, and then the fallout afterwards and, finally, the Blades fans who acted within the law who also had to put up with all the above.
Webster aided and abetted this toxic environment more than anyone I know. If she has apologised to Evans, the staff and the club that would go a long way. It wasn't that she had an opinion, it was that she had an opinion, paraded it on TV everyday in the most partisan way imaginable, knowing that the club was under seige and people were hurting. It was completely undignified imo. Should Webster et al be allowed to dictate our January signing if Wilder's choices don't fit with their moral code?

She did have a valid point. And I agreed with her that he shouldn't have returned. (I 'infamously' changed my mind on this months before his release).

However it's a valid point to note that she and others didn't resign when King signed for us and question why that was.

I have condemned the despicable comments four times on this thread.

As the great Del Boy once said: "A conscience is nice but business is business."

Terrible and petty argument

They didn’t say right I’m no longer a fan they just didn’t want to be patrons/ambassadors
