Change of tact?

If you look at the stats sites, and generalising, we get our success by playing down the flanks (ie assists from Stevens) plus assists we get through Duffy. Our strikers have good conversion rates for the chances they get.

We will not change that approach.

What we'll miss is Couttsy orchestrating everything, not losing the ball so that the 3 5 2 works.

We have no one that holds the ball, passes the ball and dribbles like Couttsy so we need to adapt. We have several who are not quite as good and that's what we're all worried about.

The options are discussed elsewhere but the player who takes on the mantle may lose the ball more (we then come under more pressure) or can't get the ball into the players out wide or in the no 10 role that create the chances. I would probably go for Carruthers at home and Lundstram away from the current options but we could strengthen with a loan or full transfer in January. We could possibly play Fleck there and adapt others around him.

Chris and Alan will work out our best next option. We may drop off from the automatic contention (equally we might not) but thanks to the fantastic start we now probably need about 39 points from 29 games to make the play offs.

We should remain optimistic.

We should continue doing it exactly the same way as we’ve done all season. Use now to January to give Lundstram some regular game time which is what he needs to show how full potential (like Clarke did), and also recruit a quality midfield player in January to compete with him or replace as necessary. My guess is that Wilder already has a player in mind.

Tha last thing we should do is star fiddling about with the system unless certain games demand it.

I can see the likes of Hanson, Lafferty and Lavery being used in cup matches. If they do well then will be closer to a league match appearance.

Absolutely mate! And as I’ve just posted, maybe those players who haven’t held a regular place because Coutts and Fleck have been so good will improve noticeably by getting regular starts. Something we shouldn’t underestimate.

Given our midfield playmaker is likely to be out for the foreseeable clearly we can’t play as we have been Coutts is to big a part of the way we currently play we need to look at other options.

Do we play Lundstram and try and play the same way?

Or do we use Hanson and maybe go long given we can score goals?

Plenty to ponder for Wilder.

In sailing, tack is a corner of a sail on the lower leading edge. Separately, tack describes which side of a sailing vessel the wind is coming from while under way—port or starboard. Tacking is the maneuver of turning between starboard and port tack by bringing the bow (the forward part of the boat) through the wind.

Blimey. Common sense at last.:)

Try Lundstram ,if that's doesn't work maybe a reshuffle with either Brooks or Carruthers ,if that doesn't work then I think a premier league midfielder on loan will be the target in January. The players are used to the system we play and a total re think wont be on the cards because of one player no matter how good he is. Plenty of top clubs will see how we play and will be happy to have a player on loan to us to play the proper way.

Couldn't agree more with this. Lundstram has 6-7 weeks to make that position his own, its not like we can bring anyone in before then. If it works then we will need cover for him and if it doesn't then as Sitters says we are in a strong position to attract players, especially premier league clubs who can see that their players will get game time with us if good enough.

I think Lundstram will be fine, he has mainly come on to tighten up in a midfield 3 towards the end of the game so it will be interesting to see how does from the start in a midfield 2.

There is no change of tact or tack required. I think some are trying to overthink this. Quite simply it will be Lundstram because he is probably the most similar and keeps the ball moving, but just as importantly he adds height for defending set pieces. Take away our back 3 we are a short side if you take either Coutts or Clarke out of the team.

Why would anyone think we are going to change what is working over one player. Yes we will need to make adjustments and Fleck, Duffy and Lundstram need to learn how to play together, but if anyone thinks we are going with a midfield 3 of short midfielders you are going to be disappointed.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Lundstrum ends up being far better than what people think.
It reminds me of when Coutts started at SU with many writing him off.

There's nothing to ponder imo .

Lundstram plays in the role he was signed for and we maintain our shape and system .

For some reason I can't help thinking your call for us to go long with Hanson upfront is a little bit tongue in cheek ;)

He has his keepnet ready for Woody and I. He’s naughty is Les.

Actually I think it’s brownie who’s Woody-hunting.

If he keeps up his current level I think Clarke is our most indespensible player. We can mix and match something together in midfield but Clarke allows us so much flexibility with his ability to come short, go up for headers, chase down defenders and get behind CHs. Genuinely can't believe I'm writing this!! Leon forever lol

I think we have no choice but to start playing the long ball game. It's not pretty but it will get results.

It’s been overlooked, for very good reason, but Leon took that goal superbly, as did Billy his. It’s such a shame they can’t play together...

We can't change the formation now, teams are just starting to work us out it must be cheating to do that. What will they say on Porktalk? What will fatty Samuels say? Come on lads think straight!

tbh we played without him against Ipswich and played well enough, shame couttsy is out for the season he's had a fabulous time since Wilder and Knill arrived but not worried at all
