Given our midfield playmaker is likely to be out for the foreseeable clearly we can’t play as we have been Coutts is to big a part of the way we currently play we need to look at other options.

Do we play Lundstram and try and play the same way?

Or do we use Hanson and maybe go long given we can score goals?

Plenty to ponder for Wilder.

Seriously, when he missed the Ipswich game Lundstram replaced him so I suspect that's what he'll try now.

Perhaps Brooks will come in...but he'll need to put in more of a defensive shift.

Hopefully Wilder has already got a plan B to cover for the lack of Coutts.

I think our midfield will be a lot poorer without Coutts, and I wouldn't be surprised if we went more direct. That is once facet of our game that is lacking, and I wouldn't be surprised we went more route one, and in Hanson we have the perfect player if we decide to go long and throw it in the mixer.

I think it's inevitable that we'll change the way we play, to some extent.

Different players have risen to prominence at different stages of Wilder's time (Clarke, Brooks, Duffy, Coutts etc.), which makes me optimistic that we'll find an adjusted way of doing things, rather than sticking square pegs in round holes.

What do you think to this Woodwardfan

Try Lundstram ,if that's doesn't work maybe a reshuffle with either Brooks or Carruthers ,if that doesn't work then I think a premier league midfielder on loan will be the target in January. The players are used to the system we play and a total re think wont be on the cards because of one player no matter how good he is. Plenty of top clubs will see how we play and will be happy to have a player on loan to us to play the proper way.

Yep, Lundstram isn't as good but he'll fit seamlessly into the team as is.

I like Hanson, but struggling to fathom how Coutts getting injured brings him any closer to the starting 11

We do not need a drastic alteration to our magnificent formation or style of play. As per the Ipswich game, someone will fill in for Coutts and we will proceed as normal.

I think Lundstram still has a long way to go but this seems like a sensible enough idea to me.

Doubt we'll go direct, we're quite a short team so that only give you Leon and Hanson to choose from up front. It also negates the rest of our midfield which has been tremendous.

I predict we'll play the same way with a few more wayward passes and the occasional attempted hoof until we settle.

Its a good excuse for some to hammer one of our players. Some think we are now Barcelona

The baffling given logic is that the fans have had their expectations raised, so now reserve the right to act like brats when things don't go exactly as they want.

Exactly. We were an attractive proposition for PL clubs and their young players before but now there's a starting central midfield slot available we're the perfect proposition for them.

It opens up a higher calibre of loan signing for us.

We're top of the league, changing the formation and style of play is crazy talk.

We aren't and never have been a one man team under Wilder.

I can see this being a “hoofwaffe out in force” type thread !!

All this tippy tappy successful bollocks starting to get to y’all ??

I stand to be corrected ;)

Crikey. Top of the league after 17 games and after one injury we’re considering bringing in someone who looked out of shape and off the pace in League One to be the focal point of our new style, with the old style that won us one league and got us top in this one abandoned.

Baby and bath water springs to mind.

Coutts is our best player I think, but the system doesn’t need ditching without trying some of our other very capable midfielders first.

There's nothing to ponder imo .

Lundstram plays in the role he was signed for and we maintain our shape and system .

For some reason I can't help thinking your call for us to go long with Hanson upfront is a little bit tongue in cheek ;)

I actually think Duffy is tbh, but any of the holy trinity getting injured is a big issue. They glue the team together. Hopefully Lundstram or Caruthers can step up at least until January.

Or indeed bash

When Lundstram plays over Coutts we are clearly not the same team.

When I first found out Coutts had a broken leg I thought 'bollocks, top 2 over'. However, on reflection, I realised the obvious. We still have 10/11 of the team that has take us top. Yes we will miss Coutts but, even if it's just for 7/8 games, we aren't all of a sudden going to lose 5 before Jan just because Coutts is out.

The big issue is going to be people expecting Lundstram to do Coutts job. Paul Coutts, he is not, and we need to accept the that beforehand. He will hopefully 'do a job' and has a chance to stake a claim here. But it also won't be fair for fans to criticise him for not doing what Paul Coutts did, because he simply isn't capable of that.

I still think we'll be in and around top 2 in Jan and will have a chance to recruit from there.
