Not sure any of those names have the pace and athleticism to push us to the top echelons of the Championship.

If Wilder can inject some pace into the side, the likes of O'Connell, Fleck, Sharp, Freeman should be able to make that leap.

Unfortunately I don't think you can just tell players these days to 'get f'kin stuck in'.

Different game, the defensive element has more or less been eradicated. A little shirt tug, a slight trip, a mistimed tackle and it's an instant yellow, 2 and you're off.

Defending is better than it's ever been because it's all about organisation and positioning. There are fewer impressive individuals than in the old days but teams are coached and drilled these days to ridiculous levels. That's why a lot of PL games and internationals are boring; because they have top defenders who are so well organised they're almost impossible to break down.

Sorry mate, I can't agree with you at all.

I think quality defenders these days are few and far between. I'd also go as far to say that the quality of defending and PL and international level (from an English perspective at least) is at it's worst for years.

You'll probably rate John Stones, I actually think he's awful as a defender.

Of the ones you have quoted, I would say these are definitely good enough:

• Simon Moore (G)
• 5Jack O'Connell (D)
• 18Kieron Freeman (D)
• 24Daniel Lafferty (D)
• 4John Fleck (M)

• 44Samir Carruthers (M)
• 10Billy Sharp (F) - Not the main striker for me. Playing off someone with pace maybe, someone like Assombalonga. I'd be surprised if he gets >12 goals next term.

These are backup/squad players at best:

• 19Ethan Ebanks-Landell (D)
• 20James Wilson (D) - not seen enough to judge although stepped in well at MK Dons.
• 6Chris Basham (M) *
• 21Mark Duffy (M) - should be good off the bench but as proved towards the back end of the season, he's no longer a 90 minute player. Think Samir maybe take his place.
• 9Caolan Lavery (F) - Got the potential and I really like him. Can't see him being a starter.
• 27Leon Clarke (F) - If his attitude is there and he plays like he has done these last 7 games, he's definitely a handful off the bench.

And these aren't good enough:

• 3Chris Hussey (D) - Not seen anything defensively from the guy. He's got a cracking cross but lafferty offers more. Wish Lafferty had Hussey's cross.
• 11Matt Done (F) - Sorry Matt.

*I think whilst Basham has been immense, he's not a first choice CB for the Championship and is definitely not good enough in CM. We need a HIGH QUALITY central leader with O'Connell to the left and I honestly think Brayford to the right.

Hanson could be our Nuhiu - the pigs hate him but everytime i've seen them on TV, he's a bloody handful.

Yeah I agree with most of your suggestions there mate. I think it's important to remember the Bournmouth example, as in players being able to raise their game as they moved up the leagues (Bash might be one of these players too). But you sum up my thoughts on players who can step up, more or less. I also agree about Hanson - for me he could be like the chief - come on and unsettle defences.

I think we need two centre backs to add to O'Connell, and injection of pace and power. But the nucleus of a decent Championship side is already there.

Probably not but having seen neither in the flesh I can't really comment. I'd just be recycling someone else's opinion.

As I said, fewer impressive individuals but they're better organised and work better as a unit in a game that now favours attacking players. Defenders haven't got worse, attackers have got quicker and more skilful.

Stones has suffered by being coached by Martinez. He's not learnt when to pass it and when to get rid and his general decision making is poor. I hoped Guardiola would improve him but he seems to have just taken away the decision making opportunity and now Stones doesn't even have the launch it option. It's not helping him.
He has the attributes but he's a long way from the finished article and hasn't progressed as quick as he should have.
