Given that most of us agree that 1, if not two centre backs need to be signed prior to the start of the season (personally, I think we need two). Who do you think will make up our centre half pairing for the season ahead?

If Collins and McEveley are centre half at the start of this season we'd have to defend from the 6 yard box.

I suspect two will join. Maybe one on loan, I mentioned Jack Stephens when we appointed Adkins and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we brought him in on loan.

First two fans who turn up with their boots.

We need three by the way.

Adkins has to make his mind up about Basham in midfield.

My forecast: Collins and Basham at the back unless we sign a new defender and then it will be new signing plus Basham.

McEveley on bench/ cover. McGahey out on loan/ transfer out.

Kennedy - fingers crossed.

Alcock - maybe another option.

I'll give you this, you are persistent with Basham ;)

Not wanting to get into an argument over this, but do you not think NA would have already tried Basham at some time in the friendlies at CH if he was going to possibly play there in the season opener? Suppose there is still time for this to happen and would reckon the Newcastle friendly will probably cement 8 or 9 starting faces for the game v Gillingham.

I really do appreciate Basham's ability at CH, but are you not advocating 2 x CH's like most on here and at the very least 1 who would then probably play with Collins?

Some players can be unrecognisable from one manager to another. Let's trust that NA knows his stuff and take it from there.

Collins and Maguire was a great partnership, I would try Collins and Kennedy, see if Collins can guide Kennedy the same way. Obviously I would prefer two maybe three new signings in this position but for the first month or so I would try them.

Adkins said he had talked to Basham about his preferences and the lad had said he didn't mind.

He's having a look at him in midfield and you know what I think about him there and we have other better options. Without any signings we need Basham's pace at the back. If we sign two central defenders it all changes.

I think Basham is plenty good enough in central defence in the right pairing, even with Collins for a while. It would be a pity if he ends up on the bench.

When I see Basham play at the back he has assurance, even a touch of arrogance. When I watch him in midfield I see plenty of effort but a touch of "headless chicken" in there. I do acknowledge though that the majority of fans favour him there and certainly at the "Meet the Manager" night there was a round of applause when it was suggested.

No argument, interesting discussion. I like to influence opinion for the good of the club and debate on here though!!:D

I was hoping we would have signed a couple of centre backs by now and started playing them together. One of last season's biggest mistakes, in my opinion, was placing too much faith in the belief that we could strengthen in January and make a late run. If we're to maintain the positivity around the club, we need to be strong from the off.

If Clough was still here and his only signing had been a utility player from one of his former clubs, people would be MAD WITH RAGE.

Didn't Adkins say McEverley is a left back?

I'm not panicking as yet because I think any two of Collins/McEverley/Basham would be ok to start in this league...to kick on and win it we'll need to bring in two CB's..hopefully one on permanent.

What's happen to Alcock BTW?
Has he featured yet or been given a FO tablet?

As I have said elsewhere, if the sum total of our inward movement is Sharp and Woolford and we do not plan to do anything about strengthening the defence, we may as well have kept Clough, as we won't get promoted under Adkins either if McEverly is to play a big role.

Clough would of course definitely signed Steve Davies and Shaun Barker.

I live in hope that Adkins is not that stupid.

I agree with your comments on Basham...for me he's the best Centre Back we've got, while when in midfield he can be as you say...a bit headless chicken. As I see it we've got an abundance of Midfielders ,but at Centre Back we look weak,so I'd like to see Bash as one of the CB's and bring in someone to play alongside...I see the rest of them as back up to be fair.
I think the main reason for playing him in midfield was because of his mobility...he gave energy to a midfield that was a bit static, and had the ability to make forward runs, with or without the ball...but we've seen him do that while playing Centre Back, and the problem with Bash in midfield is the end product is often not there..as in the final pass or finish. At Centre Back he looks the business to me..especially if we bring in the right partner.

Anyone else noticed that McEveley had the captain's armband at Exeter?
Does that answer any questions about centre half positions?

I just think back to the play off semis. We were coping with Swindon pretty well with Bash in midfield but when Brayford got injured and Bash went into defence they got the upper hand in midfield.
So, if we move Bash to CH permanently, do we need another CM? I just don't think our current situation is resolvable without signing someone.

Can see McGahey getting more game time. Would not be surprised to see only one new CB come in before Gillingham

As far as signing players with misspelled names is concerned, isn't Hari MagWire coming back?

I reckon Keddeny is in with a shout?

Sounds more like the ingredient in a pie, but with regard to old Terry, I think his legs are a major problem and we may well have seen the best he can produce. So any thoughts of Terry being an influential figure should be barred. Whether it's a pairing of Basham and one other, the next couple of months will tell...if Wallace remains fit then we have a significant influence ready to drive us forward. Added to which, if Cuvelier also shows his worth, we may have answers to those positional questions that have been mulled over in these pages. The final, as yet unanswered, question is - who will give us that edge up front? We have a few permutations, but only playing time will provide some kind of insight into that.
