Do we need one if Lenny can play RCB? We've got Evans too for CM and we'll have to give them all games, they haven't joined us to sit on the bench. Maybe we could also switch Stearman to RCB and bring Wright back in?

Doubt very much Wilder would put Stearman at RCB, he would not be able to overlap

RCB is a problem if Basham gets injured.

Think we might look for a loan, can`t risk been short at the back once the window shuts.

I know Leonard has been mooted as been able to play there, but no one knows if he would be ok to do that at this level.
Not played their for a long time in any case.

Wright is not in the manager’s plans. That’s perfectly clear.

That’s perfectly nonsense. Of course he’s in Wilder’s plans. He’s justifiably back-up for Stearman currently, but if Stearman picks up an injury before Saturday it’s perfectly clear that Wright would come in. 2 players for every position is what we’re aiming for – Wright is one of those 2, and arguably the main back-up for O’Connell too.

He doesn't have the technical ability and doesn't have the pace for that position.
His touch looks quite decent to me and I wouldn't say Basham is blessed with technical ability but I get your point about pace, he may struggle to get back if we lose the ball and might not have the stamina.

Yea true, I just can't picture Stearman making those long winded runs Bash does between 3-5 players.

Indeed. I should have been more accurate. Wright is very much in Tufty's plans. The plans are a place on the bench until the end of the season and a transfer to a League One or Two club in the Summer.

Some experts say he's been recruited for that very position, without his knowledge and never having played that position in front of our scouts.

The usual mixture of incompetence and deceit from Wilder.

Can`t see that. Leonard will play in midfield. I think CW might try to find a left-footed (or two-footed) centre back on loan for cover. A couple of injuries in that position would leave us a bit exposed.

CCV is right-footed. His departure doesn't increase the need for left-side cover, or maybe your observation is unrelated? Two we've been linked with in the past, Egan and Lenihan are both right-sided.

Because I'm sure he will, but he might be here in August...just as I have been two ages this month.

Okay, meterological summer ends on 20/9. I reckon he will still be with us on 21/9/18 if you want to take up the charity bet?

I will indeed. My charity is PRAMS. The Pinchy Real Ale and Malbec Society. I'll send you the sort code later. :)

Unrelated. Quality cover for O`Connell, rather than the right side debate, is what I was focussing on.

Not read all the posts but thanks CCV. I hope you had a good time scoring your first professional goal, smashing the pigs and feeling what it’s like to go top of the league. All the best.

Can you imagine the contract negotiations?

Wilder: Hi Ryan, we're excited to bring you to the Blades.

Leonard: Hi Chris, where do you see me fitting into the squad?

Wilder: Well, I know you've played almost your entire career in central midfield, and established a reputation as one of the best in that position in your division, but we see you playing in central defence.

Leonard: *Gets up and walks out*

Regardless of the utterly tedious Wright vs. Stearman debate, Ryan Leonard has *not* been bought to play in central defence.

Like Javier mascherano did with pep guardiola ?

Mascherano wasn't signed to play in defence.
I don't even know where this Leonard in defence thing started but I have to admit when I thought about it it excited me ,imagine if our right and left centre backs were capable defensive mids and wing backs
How fluid would our attacking be ?
The way teams have set out against us lately it would be a real progression tactically but of course it won't happen because no one has ever done it before

I can definitely see him playing RWB if Baldock is crocked and Freeman is still out, but I'd be very surprised to see him play in the back three. It's not like Wilder hasn't converted players before, though, so who knows?

I'm not sure it would happen either but someone mentioned it and my imagination ran riot
I definitely think we need more down that right hand side wether it be from midfield, wing back or overlapping centre back the quality been awful since Coutts injury

Just to jump in on this point, Javier Mascherano was put there because due to age he was no longer able to do the Box to Box like in previous years and the position was trialled at first before finding it was a really good fit and he moved permanently in to Central Defence, it happened with another Javier, Javier Zanetti he played both Left and right wings, then Wing back then right or Left back as he got older.

Maybe we should go back to the days when people like John Charles would play as a central defender and then as a centre forward, and he was brilliant in both roles.

One of the things about this team of ours is how we have players that are prepositionally fluid as we push forward and then as we have to defend players fill in for others without too much fuss.
