Cattermole targeted by Blades

SHEFFIELD United manager Bryan Robson wants Middlesbrough's Lee Cattermole to bolster the club's promotion push in the Coca-Cola Championship.
Robson hopes to sign the highly-rated teenager on loan after pulling out of a deal for veteran Brazilian international Ze Maria earlier this week.

Cattermole, 19, has started only one league game for Middlesbrough so far this season, but is still regarded as a player for the future at the Riverside Stadium.

He was recalled for Boro's midweek Carling Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, but is expected to be back on the bench for Sunday's game with Everton.

A temporary spell under former Boro manager Robson in the Championship could help his progression and inject fresh aggression into the Blades' midfield.

Robson, whose side entertain Southampton tomorrow as they return to League action, yesterday re-affirmed his desire to bolster his options in midfield, saying: "I have made a couple of enquiries and I am waiting for replies from a couple of managers.

"Before the last deadline, I had reasonable success with my targets, and there is consideration of allowing them out on loan. It's an all-round player we need, who can either do box-to-box or pass the ball and keep possession.

"I have put in phone calls to see how they have gone in Cup competition," he added. "Hopefully things will come back positive. I want someone to provide competition for the midfield lads, whilst it will also guard against injuries and suspensions."

The return of former England international midfielder Lee Hendrie in Tuesday night's Carling Cup win over Morecambe was a welcome boost for Robson who is also waiting for summer signing David Carney to gain full fitness.

Wage demands hijacked the proposed move for Ze Maria this week and the Brazilian is now in talks over a move to Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers.

Would be a decent signing i think.

He'd be a good buy i think. Middlesbrough have a good track record at bringer young un's through.

Anyone know if he's fast? We're lacking some pace at the back.

he can be very dirty and not too great on the old keeping your head from what i've seen of him.

he wears his heart on his sleeve, remember when he cried when they lost 4-0 to Villa. Would be a good signing but they have loads of injuries and he played at weekend.

personally, i would not like to see him come, from what iv seen of him i dont see how he is any better than what we already have, would rather see one of our own youngsters given a go

Not better than what we have? Are you kidding?

I've spoken to a couple of Boro supporters about him, he's a similer type of player to Monty expect he has some technical ability, they say he he can actually pass a football.

Although Foxy is correct when he says that he has a temper, got sent off quite a few times in the reserves last season.

remember his goal against Man U in the cup last season, good player

From the star...

TIMING WILL be the key to success in the loan market according to Bryan Robson.
The Sheffield United manager is pressing ahead with his search for a new midfielder following the collapse of Ze Maria’s move to Bramall Lane earlier this week.

Lee Cattermole and Josip Skoko are two of the names being linked with United as Robson attempts to inject a shot of creativity into an area high on graft but, according to some observers, low on guile.

Preliminary discussions have been held with various Premiership clubs but the former England captain admits his efforts could be affected by events beyond his control.

“The loan market will always be there,” Robson said. “So I’m not going to rush into anything. But loans can be difficult.

“There are players that clubs are happy to let go one minute and then they get a couple of injuries the next and so the whole
situation changes. You can never be that hopeful."

geary cahill and morgan look well. need a left back and a new coach to teach them to defend.

as for the midfield, where do i start???

Robinson on the radio this morning said after lengthy negotiations we finally managed to convince them to loan us Cattermole a while back, only for injuries and suspensions at his club to change their decision. This has apparently happened with a couple of targets. Made a big point of emphasising how long and how difficult discussions have been in trying to get players in, but that he's still concentrating on doing everything he can to get in a midfielder.

"SHEFFIELD United have redoubled their efforts to sign Lee Cattermole from Middlesbrough in the wake of Saturday's defeat in the Steel City derby.

The England under-21 international was one of Bryan Robson's top transfer targets earlier this season before a series of on and off the pitch incidents forced him to look elsewhere.

However, The Star understands that Robson has now re-establised a line of communication with the Riverside as he attempts to repair the damage caused a woefully inadequate performance at Hillsborough.

Despite making 18 appearances for the Premiership club this term, Cattermole has primarily been used as a substitute and could relish the opportunity of regular first team football.

Robson was scathing in his criticism of United's performance against Wednesday and insisted that only a complete makeover of the playing staff could prevent a campaign which started full of promise from drifting into obscurity.

Robson is likely to have softened his stance when United began preparing for Sunday's FA Cup fourth round tie with Manchester City yesterday.

Ugo Ehiogu became United's third signing of the transfer window when joined from Glasgow Rangers on Friday and could make his 'debut' against City. Robson has also been told that he must trim those high earners he does not regard as regular starters from the squad; a process he set in motion last night by agreeing a £400,000 deal with Ipswich Town for Alan Quinn."

lets hope we dont make it an exchange deal!

Boro reject Robson interest in Cattermole

MIDDLESBROUGH have dismissed reports Sheffield United made a cheeky bid for highly rated midfielder Lee Cattermole.

Blades boss Bryan Robson is believed to have made a tentative inquiry about Cattermole's availability at the beginning of the season.

The 19-year-old midfielder has played only a peripheral role in the side this term, as Gareth Southgate has opted for experience over youth in the centre of the park, which alerted Robson to the fact that the teenager might be available.

But after United's meek derby surrender to rivals Sheffield Wednesday last weekend it is understood Robson was more determined than ever to strengthen his midfield and went back to his former club to see if there was any change in Cattermole's future on Teesside.

Robson has identified Cattermole as the ideal player to add some steel to his under performing side.

Middlesbrough yesterday denied there has been any contact with the South Yorkshire club and let it be known that if any approach was forthcoming it would be an unwelcome one.

Doesnt look like we have even made a bid.

last time around we were due to get him on loan, with a view to a deal. After a lengthy process of bugging them and bugging them until they gave in :)....

But injuries/circumstances put an end to it.
