Catering staff need training up before the Championship

My daughter and boyfriend are students and both work at the Lane. Sunday was the last shift for quite few, so some people had a drink or two and the motivational effects of the minimum wage are really not that great on your last day.

You are right about the zero hours and that together with the minimum wage for U21s means you get six formers and students. Motivated, skilled and well trained they are not!

It wouldn't.

Daughter's boyfriend takes most of the shifts offered and gets about 15-20 hours work per week.

Some of the staff might have trouble counting but please don't tar them all with the same brush.

The prices are set by Compass, but AFTER United have demanded a rake off (eg £1 per pint etc).

I know exactly how it works. Owned and run pubs for 25 years. Spoke to events management at the Lane about 10 years ago about taking on the 1889 facilities. Compass couldn't give a fuck about having efficient staff. They'd have to pay more to get them. Most of their staff are clueless, useless or both. I employed 2 brothers who managed the bars at the Lane when we were in the prem and they were always on the verge of nervous breakdowns as they had shit management above them and shit staff below. The whole operation needs binning and starting over from scratch.

yeah well, I know what you are saying, but there are usually good reasons why companies choose to outsource various parts of their operations and it's often about profitability. It's expensive to employ people because you have to pay salaries and pensions and NI contributions and all that malarkey. And they appear on your books as headcount and can be expensive to get shut of if circumstances change suddenly.

The way it works is that United put the catering out to tender and the company with the highest bid wins. United get a lump sum up front and the caterer gets the proceeds from match day sales. Therefore to maximise profits the caterer will employ anyone with a pair of hands and serve the cheapest shit available at the highest price they think is sustainable.

Where this falls down is that United do not insert any quality standards into the tender documents, or if they do, they do not enforce them. There should be a break clause in the contract if the caterer cannot deliver. I don't think anyone has picked up on the fact that United's caterer, Compass, are the same outfit who were at the centre of the school dinner/turkey twizzlers scandal a few years ago. I think this sums them up without elaborating any further and explains the junk you're shoving in your face on matchdays.

As I said in an earlier post, the Kell Brook event will be attended by a largely non-footballing audience who are unlikely to accept the same shit football fans are expected to put up with. And it will be United who will come out of this with egg on their faces, not the caterer. Who the fuck in the club is going to take responsibility for this and do something before the recriminations start?

I think you're taking this personally as you have family working there.

Well wouldn't you if someone said:

Most of their staff are clueless, useless or both

They are badly paid and badly trained but some of them do try to do decent job.

Perhaps instead of having a pop at young kids, you could contact the club and offer them the benefit of your experience? You never know, they might just listen....

Sat on the family stand with the home fans when we played Oldham away. Went down for a drink at half time to discover tables with bottles of beer on ice ready for everyone to buy.

If the likes of Oldham (no disrespect) can get it spot on, why can't we?
