I noticed Leeds were given Cat 1 academy status recently, which allows them to submit an u23's side into the whatever brand paint trophy it is this season.

Are we interested in getting Cat 1 or even making any progress with this? Will the new training ground help with any of this does anyone know?

Leeds only 30 minutes away having cat 1 is surely bad for us, as such a short distance may sway some youngsters from joining us, meaning less quality through our academy in future?

Look at the academy players we’ve developed that have gone on to greater things. Then look at all the Leeds academy players. Can’t think of one, to be honest, since James Milner.

I’m pretty sure it’s to do with our facilities in the first instance. When we improve those we then need to do the relevant improvements in coaching/education. The cost is something like 3 or 4 times more than a Cat 2.

Great opportunity for United to set the club up as the youth development club in the region by using some of the Prem money to develop some of the best facilities around.
Will they take it?

Spending money now on it to potentially deliver talent in 5-6 years time, and probably closer to 10 years time until it starts to repay the huge outlay.
I think the academy sits behind the current training ground, the current squad, the stadium and the new training ground. Then maybe.

It's imperative this is done asap. It's the only form of financial doping that is overtly sanctioned in the EFL. It's the only way that you can get players through on a consistent basis, as the previous system that allowed Shirecliffe to be so successful has been destroyed whilst the overheads remain. If we aren't looking at this, I'd question whether it's worth bringing in these big name and doubtless expensive coaches recently.

We are going cat 1, That’s why we’ve purchased lightwood. kids training at Warminster Rd now.
Only on the Uni pitches because of Covid and prioritising the 1st team. Short term venue, possibly shorter than anticipated.

I see that Nottingham Forest (with Gary Brazil leading as it happens) are making serious noises about pushing for Cat 1 Academy Status. With a plan to be audited for it next Summer. The higher quality of the games program being cited as a key reason for the move

Shame about their 1st team. Just like us in 2010-11, poor 1st team but had a good Academy.

I still see shirecliffe as a shiny new training ground ?!!! How long have we been there now?
