A question that is never really asked, I think Stearman would be right for the job, or maybe Basham?

I think appointing Stearman as captain would be a backwards then sideways then backwards then sideways then backwards step.
Bit like when he took Jake Wright's place in the team.

No idea what they are all like as blokes.

As players and examples on the pitch where I see them - Fleck or O'Connell.

Lundstram was a captain at 22 years old. Maybe him.

Don't think he'll get much game time next season. Don't you think it would be better to have someone at the back as captain, someone in the thick of it?

If it ain’t broken don’t try to fix it.
What a way to reward Sharp for two seasons of successful leadership, by stripping him of the captaincy.
He should remain as “Club Captain” until he leaves the club in my opinion.

If Sharp isn’t playing then the Vice-Captain should be Captain for that match. Which is Paul Coutts.

If neither Sharp or Coutts is playing then arguably it could be Stearman but Clarke got the nod last season and I expect that to remain the case.

An alternative debate would be whether Stearman will play regularly next season or not? Of the three Central Defenders, I would say he holds the position where we are most likely to sign a replacement/improvement.

Based on their importance to the team, Fleck, Coutts and O'Connell would be good shouts as captains.

However, my personal choice would be Chris Basham. Using the England cricket team as an example, and as much as I like Joe Root as a cricketer (and the fact he's a Blade), your captain doesn't always have to be your best player.

I don't know him personally of course, but Basham just strikes me as the sort of player who would play in goal if he was asked and wouldn't complain, he would just be happy to have a shirt. I also think he wouldn't cause problems if he was on the bench, and would probablybe a positive influence in the dressing room.

This would be an important quality to have for the manager when it might not be going so well, and for squad morale on the whole.

Very good arguments made for several candidates in this thread. The fact we have so many is a credit to the club.
Personally though I think it will be as it was this season. Billy, Coutts and Clarke in that order.
Remember they are the three that Chris repeatedly name dropped in interviews as holding themselves and their teammates to the highest standards possible, i.e. they are the three that dish out the bollockings on behalf of the management team, and command the most respect amongst the squad.
All that being said, Chris could just as easily bring in a new CB warhorse to lead us out.

Whoever gets it, standards won't drop that's for sure.

Billy or JoC. But I would keep with Billy.

I know people want wholesale changes but we have to stick to what we know and are good at and improve on that.

We are the underdog team.

Billy seems to be the underdog in our team.

Both seem to do well!

Always thought being captain was over rated , one thing for certain he needs to be a regular in the side, other than that who gives a fuck

Few people mentioning JOC but from what I understand about the squad he's a quieter personality in the group. No doubt an excellent player but i'm not sure if he's exactly the right for captain at this moment in time.

For me Coutts and Billy between them cover the qualities very well.
Coutts is apparently super competitive and driven, which is exactly what you want. Billy in turn leads from the front and demands a high level of performance from the whole group, as well as inspiring them and teaching the ways of the Blades.

A leader is a leader. Wether Sharp has the armband or not I can't see him giving less 100% when he's on the pitch nor not leading by example. (We need to give him and Clarke more chances in the box rather than argue about captains tbh) l'd prefer a commanding defender to do the job and let Billy and Leon concentrate on scoring goals.

Thought this thread was going to be about a really shit superhero....

Although obviously a division higher I thought Jack O'C had a "finding his feet" season. Did a good job without pulling up any trees. Learning curve. He'll step up again next season imo. Doesn't look like a leader and no surprise about your comments.
