Captain McEveley

I think a lot of dodgy players are starting to find a bit of rhythm recently.
McEv- been a lot better
Collins- still dodgy but a bit less naff
Hammond- seems to have settled to league one
Coutts- much improved (although not the quickest by a long way)
Basham- been very good in the last few games I've seen
... So there's still hope that sammon might come good *crosses fingers*
Holy mother of jesus h christ.
Thank the Lord for our tufty.

I have to say that I thought McEveley was one of our better players up until that fateful handball incident at Spurs. After that he seemed to get dogs abuse and generally his play seemed to deteriorate. Whether that was just coincidental, I don't know, but it did seem to get to him.

Thankfully we've really moved on but I don't wish him any ill feeling.

Let's be right, he was nowhere near good enough, but he tried more than plenty of others did. And he managed to silence the boo boys too, which shows character if not ability.

He never hid, however bad the team performance and always showed for the ball. He was okay going forward at a time when we had a poor team (post Murphy) with very limited attacking options.

He made some howlers but we have had far worse defenders in recent years who never got the same degree of abuse (Stewart, Nosworthy, McMahon and Williams spring to mind).

Good luck to the lad.

To be fair I gave Jordan Stewart thoroughly deserved dogs abuse. The ****.

I think Clough did too. He wanted mobile centre halves who could use their feet and you don't get many of those in L1. I think that when he paired up McEv and Bash he thought he'd solved the defensive problems. Then McEv made that error at Spurs and never really got over it. He still had good games but was inconsistent and error prone.

I've got nothing against him, he did his best, but he was symptomatic of the malaise that had descended on the club during that period. We had too many players that were inconsistent, who didn't seem to hurt enough when we lost, who didn't have the 'winning attitude' that managers like Ferguson, Mourinho and Wilder instill in their players.

I seem to recall Nosworthy and McMahon getting plenty of pelters.

How can anybody dislike Jordan Stewart? So crap it was comical.

I still remember fans on Kop cheering him on (ironically of course) like it was an under 10's match wanting the none athletic kid to do well.

I can even remember him going on a run beating three players and being totally bewildered himself to how he'd accomplished the feat to fan silence. Then the unanimous shout of "Gu on lad".

Comedy gold, club legend in my book. :):D

Both spot on, he never looked like after the spurs game he could get his shit together and play consistently, plus played him self in to positions on a number of occasions he was simply never going to recover the ground from, caught up in play he should have been, and as you say never looked that bothered when we lost, a shrug of the shoulder and that was that.

My abiding memory of him was away at Donny last year when he chopped one of their players in half in our box with a tackle so late it hasn't happened yet. It was clear that his legs had gone and was unable to adapt his game to carry on at Football League level.

That said to echo others he looked like he was one of the few who gave a shit and initially put In some decent performances under Clough.

Don't know when we turned into a club that gives out dogs abuse to ex-players just for the sake of it. Suppose that's modern football, people can only talk in hyperbole. Everyone has to be 'world class' or 'utter dog shit'.

Never really heard an explanation for that bizarre handball, did he ever give one?

Yet Madkins made him Captain.
Now that was bizarre

Adkins was doomed to failure the moment he looked at mceverly and Collins and didn't immediately replace them. Don't know if it was wanting to give them a chance or he just wasn't a good judge of players but that set the tone for everything that followed.

Had wilder taken over then, they would have been the first out of the door and been properly replaced. One look would have been enough to tell they weren't of the required standard and had proved that for the previous however many seasons.
