I have noticed several comments about 'this new head of scouting'. Do you really think hes to blame? Or could it be that the board have lied and pocketed the Jamie Murphy money/manure money and had no intention on backing Adkins this window. I doubt Adkins will honestly believe that our defence is strong enough to get promoted. Yet he will get blamed when we fail to go up this season

I've confused about Dan Burn.

I've confused because he's hardly got glowing reviews from many of the Fulham fans but then he's played most games for them.
I'm confused as to why someone playing most games in the championship would sign for a league 1 club with no definite or likely prospect of promotion. Especially when the move would take him from London to Sheffield.

I'm confused why our manager was watching an U-21 game if the club was making any attempt to sign him. Or anyone else.

Do United forget that we are in League 1, that most established Championship players do not want to drop to this horrific standard and that there are other clubs in the north that he is more likely to be hoping come in for him. Fulham have let another centre half, Bodurov, go out on loan.

We can 100% forget about signing Burn this season. And in the summer, because we'll still be in League One and he'll be available on a free.

I think the idea that you can unearth hidden gems is a bit of a myth. Whilst we've sat on our hands for twenty years, bullshitting the support with promises of success and claims that we are a 'we'll run club' the reality is that other clubs have developed extensive scouting networks and every professional player in the country has been scouted by several different clubs.
Every fucker is trying to play money ball, to find bargains you have to be looking in non league. Which is a real gamble unless you've got scouts and contacts who know the non league scene inside and out.
As long as we keep trying to sign from leagues above, we'll overpay. It really is that simple.

It must be possible to identify targets somewhere between first team regulars in the division above and "panic buys".

Adkins and his staff must spend a lot of time in the coming months searching for players that will fit into the set up he wants to use next season. We should have few problems getting rid of quite a lot of unwanted players in the summer. Adkins must be encouraged to build something, a team that will develop and improve year by year.

Maybe the board have given up on this season and want to consolidate in the summer (like Villa). I'm not saying I agree with it, but its unlikely that we will get auto's this season no matter who we bring in. It is relatively possible for us to get play offs without signing anyone. We would probably have a better chance going up with additions.

I hope they have saved the "Murphy" and Man U money for the summer, hopefully a bit of investment too.

The Blades failed attempts to win over Dan Burn reminds me of Nile Crane's failed attempts to woo the nanny in Frasier which went on for about nine series. Come to think of it he ended up marrying her so perhaps we shouldn't give up yet.
