I’m still not convinced who Leon’s partner should be right now.

I wonder if we should go for 2 number 10s to squeeze a bit more decisiveness into the team.

Although there is an element of horses for courses I think not having Duffy in the XI detracts from our play an to me Holmes is a potential match winner and scorer AND can shoot from distance.

I’d have the usual defensive six, Fleck and Evans then Duffy slightly behind Holmes slightly off Leon.

Thoughts?

Yep I’d like to see that.
One thing for sure in my opinion is that Duffy must play. Our most creative player.
Don’t understand playing 3 deep midfielders and two strikers with no number 10 linking it

In a tough fixture I think Wilder thought we needed a solid line-up for the first hour. As things turned out Villa were there for the taking in the first half and unfortunately Leonard had a quiet debut, nothing bad about his performance but not influential enough in that role.

I don't think we played '3 deep midfielders'. With Evans deep the other two had licence to push on and that provides more options in the midfield. Against Wolves I think we'll try to be solid. Against Leeds I think we can set up a lot more positively. Two 'No.10's" ? Last half hour maybe but hopefully Holmes or Duffy from the start. We've bought Leonard to play him though, to be sure.

Whatever the thoughts on our formation and who plays where , there is no denying that we have been really unlucky in many games this season. The worm will turn and hopefully we will get the rub of the green in the upcoming fixtures.
Things usually even out over a season, so maybe our shots will start to go in rather than hitting the woodwork.
We have many very good players capable of winning games in this division and performances have not mirrored results. Hopefully this will change.

Someone who I know well was a PL linesman and was more than a little nervous of the fact that he was running the dugout line at Old Trafford.....

All went swimmingly for ten minutes, but then it started:

“Lino, Lino....”
“When play stops, Mr.Ferguson”
“LINO, LINO....”
“Wait for the whistle, Mr.Ferguson”

The whistle eventually went

“What is it Mr.Ferguson?”

“We’ve got two number fives on the pitch..........”

Duffy has to play either way, if he doesn't start at Wolves then Wilder has some explaining to do. Can't leave out your best player.

You could say the same about Billy who has scored 40+ goals in 18 months.

Having said that, CW has got us this far and surprised many times along the way. Whilst it is tempting to get down the car park with the pitch forks, I'm inclined to give CW/AK the benefit of the doubt again.

It's worth a go CB...we have played with 2 10's at times...I think we finished off with Brooks and Duffy at Leeds behind Leon, with Brooks the one to get up in support...We could try the same with Holmes ofcourse.
There's not much wrong as Derf said...we just need to convert our chances and get the final ball right.

I'd like to see Brooks as one of the two 10s. Think he'd get in more attacking positions than Duffy or Holmes so would make it less of a one up top formation.

He's also our only attacking player who can beat a man and then get away from him with pace. I thought John Terry was superb the other night but I'd like to have seen Brooks running at him.

Yes. I’ve wanted us to give 3-4-3 a chance for a while now with Duffy and Brooks/Holmes behind Clarke or Wilson.

I also think it’s a formation which would suit Carruthers better and get more of his talent unlocked.

Exactly. 8 assists this season, the third highest in the league.
Duff has really stepped up and is a must for me

When Brooks is back fit he needs to play. He's even more likely to make things happen than Duffy is, he's more fearless and will lose the ball more by this but he scares the opposition to death.
Not saying he's a better footballer than Duff, he's not got the brain Duffy has and he's not as good at keeping hold of the ball but we need his bit of class upfront playing just off Clarke.

The usual 5 at the back

----------Evans
Leonard------Fleck

---Brooks
-----------------Clarke

Whether we can or can't, this will be our toughest game of the season so it's not really the time to start experimenting with new formations. If we're going to do something different we need a full week on the training ground to work on shape.

Set up how we did on Tuesday, try to replicate our first half performance and try not to make any mistakes and we may come away with something, even if it's only a point.
Once Leeds are out of the way we've got games coming up where we should be looking to win and we've got a better chance of doing so if we're not on a three game losing streak through trying to force results and getting caught out.

Ideally Brooks should be part of any 'two 10s' line up.

I think Leeds are part of that run. Pretty average side and I'd expect us to beat them at home.

Yeah I think we can be a little more adventurous against them but they're two points behind us so we can't expect to turn them over. If they're average and only two points behind us, what does it make us?

Two number tens for me would suit our system but one of them has to be Brooks because of his ability to go past players. The other has to be Duffy with Holmes coming on when he tires. First saw Clarke, Duffy and Brooks play together in the friendly against Stoke second half pre-season. We caused a premiership team problems with the running off the ball. When Duffy came on against the Pigs at Swillsborougn they couldn't cope with it. Of course we had Coutts dictating the play in both games.

Tomorrow we'll probably go with the same starting line up and keep it tight. Problem is if Evans and Leonard are still getting up to speed with the pace of the championship they are going to be tired again early in the second half having played on Tuesday. I'd start with Duffy because of his ability to find space in front of the oppositions back four enabling the ball to moved forward quicker. We also missed his link up play from throw ins against Villa.
