Can playing for Northern Ireland affect where you were born?

There's nothing better than a bit of James Shield bashing when he makes stupid mistakes, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that sentence, in context, with the bit about Canada that follows. Anyone who thinks there is is almost as illiterate as James Shield.

Technically it isn't incorrect grammatically, but it's just a little clunky, is it not?

Don't begrudge us this! Leonard is due to the sign, the pigs are due to appoint a nobody - we've got very little to moan about, and we're clutching at straws here!

How many players have represented the Republic but weren't born there?

How did David Brooks play for England U-?? but represented Wales at full international level?

Nothing new about Lavary being born in a country that he doesn't represent at international level.

Final player, possibly the highest profile so far.... Diego Costa.

Alfredo di Stefano, Born in Argentina, played full internationals for Argentina, Colombia and Spain.

It seems it usually can! According to James Shield in his article in today's Star about Caolan Lavery. He writes:

"Despite representing Northern Ireland at youth and under-21 level, Lavery was born in Red Deer, Alberta".

I find it more astonishing that he came from a Red Deer. The wonders of medical science I suppose but what a stupid name for a Deer - Alberta.

Yes I see your point CarbsRus. Maybe he would have been better saying.......

"Despite representing Northern Ireland at youth and under-21 level, Lavery was born in Red Deer, Alberta".

If James Shield had phrased it like that it would have been crystal clear and no room for any misunderstanding.........:)

There isn’t any misunderstanding as it is. Makes absolute sense.

Ahh...fair play to the lad. After making his debut at u-21 level, he did well to then go on and be born.

I wouldn't be too harsh on Shield though, he strikes me as being the sort of bloke that does well to sit in the right direction facing the computer some days.

I can't believe they still used that 'stoned look' mugshot on the star.

It's poor use of English I'm afraid. It wouldn't have got past one of my Editors or old English schoolteachers for that matter, but I do appreciate that standards of English aren't what they were - and that The Star and similar newspapers don't seem to have much in the way of editorial checks in place.

The point is: His birth place did not affect his ability to play for Northern Ireland, not the other way round. So it should be written as:

"Despite being born in Red Deer, Alberta, Lavery represented Northern Ireland at youth and under-21 level".

Now it is grammatically correct and makes sense.

Maybe the Red Deer has become a part time maternity ward to ease the winter burden on the NHS. and Alberta was the midwife.

That doesn't then flow into the next sentence which relates to him growing up in Canada, which is why the Canada bit is at the end of the line, because it's an entire story, not one line about his nationality.

Despite works both ways, one thing happened despite the other thing happening, the chronological order of these events is irrelevant. The entire point of the word despite is that the two things are not dependent on one another.

The point Shield is making is: The country he plays for wasn't actually where he was born. So it was written correctly.

Come on Danny, do keep up! I have quoted word for word James Shield. Of course it makes perfect sense. My reply was smattered with more than a hint of sarcasm......

Or "Despite representing Canada at u17 level, having being born and raised there, Lavery opted to represent his [paremt A's] birthplace of Northern Ireland. Lavery is also eligible play for Republic of Ireland as his [parent B] was born there."

He could actually represent any of the 3 at full international level still as he's never been capped...
I imagine whoever comes in first will get him.
