Agree, he’s got pace though, which is something we lack. So would probably mainly be a regular sub with the occasional start.

True, At the tme it was a no brainer.
1 million was a lot of money back then for a league 1 club, it’s a bit like a league 1 club now being offered 5 million for a promising reserve player. At the time I thought Everton were mad, but PL clubs can afford to take very risky gambles, he’s progressing fairly well and has been excellent business for them. Suppose it’s similiar to our purchase of Keane Bryan, another highly rated youngster.

Bring him back to SU and I really doubt he’d stand out as being clearly better than what we’ve got.
Read the Everton forums, many don’t rate him but are prepared to be patient because he’s young and developing.
He’s also quick and a good lad, they seem to like him and want him to succeed there.

Back then? It was 2 and a half years ago, not 1965.

I didn’t mind the sale of Calvert-Lewin but to suggest it’s like a League 1 club being offered £5m now is ridiculous

I’ll add that I only know one Everton fan and he thinks he’s brilliant

He’ll never make it as a Premier League player. Despite continuing to be a Premier League player that plays Premier League games, in the Premier League, against Premier League opposition.
 



When I saw him make his cameos for us I really didn't think much of him.

And on the basis that my judgement of players is, as a person that watches football, unassailable, he must be on borrowed time.
 
Know two Everton season ticket holders, they don’t reply when I talk about him, just raise thier eyebrows..

The jury is out, they expect better than DCL..
 
8 goals 2 assists in 31 appearances, a fair few off the bench in all competitions (6G 1A in the Prem) is a very decent return I'd say.

I'd think if he came to the Championship he'd be in danger of ripping it a new one, Dwight Gayle scored the same last season in more appearances with more starts thrown in too I'd imagine and most think he's alright.
 
I don't know what it is with footballers, I really don't. I mean, they seem to have a little purple patch of form that lasts 2 or 3 years and then....Kaput! They're never heard of again. (Yes there are some exceptions - but this describes many).

Chelsea raided us for Jacob Mellis when he was just 16 and few of us had heard of him. Everton raided us for Calvert-Lewin when most of us who'd seen him play wondered what all the fuss was about. The one player I've been sorry to see go in recent years is David Brooks. Because I think he was an exceptional talent. Calvert-Lewin was promising but fairly ordinary. Brooks was on a different level altogether.

If there's any chance the footballing Gods could get Bournemouth relegated and us promoted this season, and allow us to buy him back, that would be fantastic to me. Because he's going to be one of the best players in the country imo - he's already well on the way to that from what I've seen.

But in the main, you have to be so, so careful that you don't get carried away and spend millions on some bloke with a shorter shelf-life than a bag of Aldi fruit and veg.

The problem he has there is that Everton are a club with European aspirations. Their fans want more than an up and coming youngster, they want Lukaku back.

I'm surprised at his rise though. Wasn't bothered we sold him at the time but he is becoming a very good mid table premier league player
 
I thought he was an Everton player and had been for ages?
 
I'm a big DCL fan. Amongst other things, I saw him score that winner for England in the FIFA U20 World Cup Final in Korea. When he left us, my feelings at the time were - well, what can you do? I felt roughly the same about Aaron Ramsdale. We were stagnating in L1. A Premier League club come calling. They can take a gamble & offer what is peanuts to them, but a tidy sum to us. The player is going - that's how it is.
But what really intrigues me is how clubs judge & spot POTENTIAL. Dom had a few first team games, & was a regular at U23. But, he wasn't rewriting U23 scoring records like Jake Wright & Jordan Hallam. I understand Everton put a lot of effort into scouting youngsters. They bought Dom on his potential, not his record. He looked ordinary for us, he's a regular starter for them, with Premier League goals under his belt. OK, that's with a few more years on the clock. Let's say Everton got it right, who saw what? Fascinates me....

I'm just going to say law of averages coupled with signing young internationals after scouting them. Of course there isn't much risk with the Brooks', Maguires, Naughtons and Walkers of this world as they already been proven to at least second tier (standard).

DCL wasn't a young International at that time. That's part of the point I'm making. He played a lot in the same U23 team as Louis Reed. Louis was also an England Youth International.

I haven’t been trained in this at all so I’m basically guessing but I’d look at strengths and weaknesses and ask the following;
Does the player have attributes that are desirable in the PL? For example, DCL is tall, athletic and fairly mobile. That gives you something to build on.

Can you coach out the player’s weaknesses? Again, using DCL as an example, his technique seems OK, looks pretty decent at youth level but there’s room for improvement, particularly when they signed him. The question is would he improve, which leads into the next question -

What’s his attitude like? If he’s not willing to work hard, you’re wasting your time. You can only find this out by talking to people.

So, for me, it’s looking at the building blocks, looking for players who have some attributes that are PL level, like spotting Maguire’s reading of the game, his leadership/strength of personality and sheer strength and thinking ‘there’s enough there to build on’.

I guess it gets harder the younger they are as it becomes impossible to envisage them as adults playing in an adult league and your only frame of reference is their peers.

You are right (I had to check) but it was a very fine line between signing for Everton and being selected for the England U-20 team, so either he was already on the radar, or he was selected because he 'played' for Everton.
 



DCL was supposedly initially signed as a development player but Koeman thrust him into the first team earlier than expected.
