God's country ...... Rovrum!
...........according to the Mirror

Could well be the end of that then!

Can't see anything but apologies if posted elsewhere.

Blackwell's public statement that he was a good player probably alerted Holloway I would imagine.

Foolish I have to say..........

You can't put this one on Blackwell. He would have known this guy's agent will be looking for other clubs and Blackpool can give him PL.

This search for a right back is quite pathetic. I kind of wish we would just say we are not getting one. Lowton is to get the job and Brown is to back him up, however we are probably just going to wheel in another 4 triallists this week.

I'm not putting anything on Blackwell, but it makes sense to anyone that you dont advertise a player you are interested in. Kind of a no brainer..........

They should either give the job to Lowton or just sign Gilbert!

I would guess that there were half a dozen clubs watching him at County last week. In effect we were trialing him for their benefit.

You could say that Prem wages and prem footy will see the end of Calve as far as we're concerned and I said as much on the other board. Someone rightly pointed out to me tho that that didn't stop Britton coming to us, so I live in hope

Calve's a left back though.

No mention of calve on ssn's report from the blackpool match and they did mention 3 other triallists. Holloway's not there anyway, he's watching another game

I heard that, but then once checking out blackpool's website it states he's started.

If the scouts were at the match do you really think anything Blackwell said made any difference?

If Blackwell is as bad as most fans say he is would Holloway take any notice?

Having met Holloway I would say he makes his own mind up anyway.

He played right back at Notts County. A couple of his online profiles say he's a right back as well.

It doesnt matter anyway because we need both!

Googled a bit more and am more confused now. Some reports say he's a left back, others that he's a right back. Maybe he can play on either side, but what's his strongest foot?

He hadn't been scouted by us so he had to be trialed. His agent would have contacted Blackpool .Now it is down to who wants him enough and can afford his wages.

He was dribbling with his right foot against Notts County and put in a few crosses with his right as well.

Whats up with folk?! Look....I'm not anti-blackwell, far from it. I have my opinions but as a person I have no beef with him.

All I'm saying is that managers....IMO....should keep their cards close to their chest, regardless of who is watching. He might not have been what the scouts were ideally looking for, but his comments may have alerted those who were looking for such a player.

Its all about being as discreet as possible about your intentions. If you start stating that someone is a great player then it also makes those other interesting clubs think "we better move fast, they might offer him a contract soon!"

Blackwell's comments about Calve might have made no difference at all, I accept that. But they certainly wouldnt help anyone.

Bringing him off after 65 minutes suggests they've probably made up their minds, and considering the overall poor performance they're more likely to release him than sign him.

And hopefully he's realised that we're a better team than Blackpool.

Holloway will probably pull out all the stops to sign Lloyd Doyley instead.

I agree that it's often better to keep their cards close to their chests, but there are occaisions where it could help....

What about if Blackwell already knew of Blackpool's intentions and expected them to potentially offer him a contract as a squad player (I know they are looking at one or two other right backs they'd consider before him), this way, he comes out and publically declares how much he rates Calve giving the player confidence that he'll come in as a first teamer and very much part of the managers plans, it massages the players ego.

It might alert others, but like has already been said it's unlikely that managers are sat scouring websites/papers for other managers comments on potential targets. I'd imagine anyone who can realistically compete with us to sign him, would have identified him via alternative means, otherwise Premiership managers would be queuing up to sign anyone who is mentioned in an article in The Star ("Blades ace", "blades supremo", "blades star" etc).

Discreet??

Any scout will know who's playing where otherwise what are they doing?

What's up with folk?

It's not me who's critisising is it?

:)

Silverfox, all ive done is quite rightly point out that the manager shouldnt bang on about how good a player is before he's signed him. Its common practice in football management mate.

As I said I'm not a "Blackwell Out" basher by any means but I have simply made the point (fair enough people disagree) and ive had comments of "you cant blame this one on Blackwell" and "it wouldnt make any difference." Course it would make a difference! Its a further endorsement by a seasoned Championship manager!

Who's criticising anyway? Its a basic observation of something that should really be a no brainer........

Anyway I dont see how ive come to debate this so I'll leave it at that :)

Blackwell shouldn't have said anything unless he was signed, but how much difference his comments made is questionable.

He was right though, he did look a class act. Very comfortable on the ball and got forward well.

On the SUFC web-site, blackwell is quoted as saying that he will give the trialists another game against Estudientes. Perhaps Calve will be returning and is just trying to get seen in as many games as possible.

who have we got on trial still? i have lost count and cant remember who is still there with us having so many?
