27 first team games is exactly what Semple needed after a year out. Looks to have done very well.

Will be interesting what happens next.

January is not the best transfer window as you need to find a club who needs a left sided CB and one who is still young.

Pitty he hadn’t come back a couple of days ago. Would have done a decent job today from the shit I paid to watch.

That would be a huge step backwards. He needs to be going out to a L1 club.

Yes, you could be right in the ideal world, but more than anything he needs to go to a team that will play him...............Woodburn not as an example.

It's not our fault with Woodburn, but it seems as though his career may have been put back a whole year because of this aborted deal - sad really.

If we're going to recall him to send him backwards, why not just leave him at QOTS? Rave reviews, the only way from there is league 2 or higher if possible.

Get on the blower to Big Sol!

yep, Macclesfield would be fine - but what Semple needs is to carry on playing in a team that is weak at centre back. If he's not going to play, then yes agreed about QotS - just leave him to play.

The Scottish Championship is just as good as L2, if not better. He seemed happy at QOTS. Why not just send him back if we can’t get him a loan at a L1 club?

It be good to see more of the youngsters joining Scottish Championship or National league rather than being in Under 23s or Under 18s, there are a fair few professional teams especially in the National League where they could learn alot from. The competition is tough with the likes of Jobi McAnuff at Leyton Orient, Adam Rooney at Salford and Sanmi Odelusi at Halifax all 3 have good Football League pedigree and this is just 3 players at 3 clubs. A link up with some National League clubs or even National League North Clubs too would help players progress in a competitive environment

What, like Barrow for example?

Pre Gilmour we had 9/10 players out on loan and all were above National North standard. I'd say the u23s is above national north standard.

Tyler smith was playing in a barrow side that were always going to be strugglers in the National league, yet he's banged goals in and the fans think he's great (and without getting any help).

1 example where we have used the National League well but still think we could use it more. I know we have some commitment when it comes to Under 23s league but we arent in any cups anymore most of the Under 23s arent going to get near the 1st team at the minute so why not see what they can do shipping them out

It may be that CW/AK and the academy management may have had a look at all the promising youngsters and made the decision to move some around.

As a club WE should be selfish and try and place them where they will be played to gain experience - not just be a bench warmer. Sometimes that means playing them a little below what level they should be at.

I saw Semple play once, in the U23 cup final at BDTBL a few years ago - thought he looked excellent that evening and think Sam Graham was playing right back who also looked good. Semple could well be the next one to come into the squad - if we don't go up that is!

Most of the u23s are kids, well under 23. I think the majority could play for the u18s. As Scooter_mcgavin has already pointed out, we have a large number of youth players out on loan. My impression is that as soon as they are deemed ready, as soon as they perform consistently well in the u23s, we look to get them out on loan.

Which of our current u23s do you think are ready to go out on loan?

I'll throw one in for good measure - perhaps he's been brought back to be cover for JOC?

We're not exactly blessed with cover now that Lafferty has gone out.

Perhaps he'll gain from the full blown training we do at Shirecliffe.

But he played almost every game for QOTS, he wasn’t bench warming.

Graham has been bench warming at Oldham, made a few appearances, some out of position, hasn’t forced his way into the first team.

There is currently an argument about whether a youth playing for the u23s is classed as a ‘competitive game’ or words to that effect because at the moment, it appears that if you’ve been on loan and also played for the u23s, as Graham has, you may not be eligible to play for another club in the same season (see Tammy Abraham debate in the media). Ideally, we’d loan Graham to a club that will play him, even if it’s National League, but it’s not clear that we can.

Thats a valid point to be fair, the FA/Football League dont help when it comes to player development there should be a clause in that if its Under 23s/Development league it doesnt count

The most "senior" Academy Players not already out on loan are
Callum Semple - just returned from loan
Sam Graham - just returned from loan
Jake Eastwood
Jordan Doherty (at a push)
Stephen Mallon

Those would be the most likely loan outers (opinion)

That wouldn’t be a bad option. I’m no expert but I get the impression that most young players benefit from a mix of loans and training with the first team.

Semple needs to play games. Been out a year and needs games whether it is L1, L2 or National League.

Wilder doesn’t seem to have a problem with RND being with Barrow all season so I guess it would be good enough for Semple.

Appearances on loan can be deceptive. If you play 5 minites or 90 minutes it all shows as an appearance....

I look at minutes played. Semple is over 2000 minutes at QOTS. Some 500 more than any of the other young loanees we have out.

OK I have a vested interest that meant I was at Callum Semple;s final game for QOTS at Inverness and it was a fitting end to his short spell with them. He was seen as a regular and will be missed by the fans. Talk of the merits or otherwise of playing down are interesting but in Callum's case it was important he earned the right to play week in week out. Two important aspects of his loan were to find if he could compete at this level. He is a product of the coaches at United and he is trained to be a modern CB. Read the game, control and pass short and long and bring the ball out. This is not easy in Scotland where the physical aspects of the game mean the CBs are under constant pressure and it is difficult to find a pass so it's old fashioned defending, a good addition to his skill set. He did hit a long wonder ball in the last game at Dumfries that led to a goal, just to show his skill set was intact The other thing is the relationship with the fans. True there are less of them but they are no less passionate about their team and players who give 100% . I now have no problems with young players going out on loan to lower clubs but they must earn the right to command a place. There were two other loan lads at Dumfries at the same time as Callum and they were at best bit players. So do not deride the lower leagues its an introduction to competitive men's football for lads who have been a bit cosseted and how they handle cleaning their training kit when in digs can be character building as well

Seen Semple a few times before his injury he would be at least in the first team squad now.
Chuffed how he’s progressed at QOTS

I would love to see it Silent but I don’t think it is going to happen.
Far too many players in front of him.

Redhead doesnt think so. He said far too many players in front of him.

We'll see.

You are right Silent, I don’t see him in the first team squad. Certainly not now Bryan has joined the club and to an e tent Cranie, although I admit he is right sided.

Saw Semple in the u23s match against Wendy last season. He impressed me more than Bryan did last Sunday

We have a very good centre back in Semple, I personally think we should get him involved in the squad, he’s that good.

Let’s face it, we could have him in the squad and take someone out of it who’s on a bucket load of wages and we wouldn’t be any weaker, we could also put those wages that we’re saving into something more influential up the pitch.

This lad will go far in the game. Good to see his loan has gone very well, great news considering his injury.

He is a very good player. Think he needs more first team action on loan and then maybe he will get his chance to be involved.
There seems to be no news of him going on loan elsewhere which could suggest that he is going to be part of the 1st team squad for the rest of the season
