Kind of you to say so, but considering that I was getting the rough rhetorical equivalent of Third Ypres when I poked my nose above the line of sandbags, I'm a bit gunshy. Here in the US (I'm based in NYC), discussions of "magic numbers" are very common, especially in the last weeks of the baseball season. In the US, anyway, whether or not a team will make the playoffs, and what its final position can be, has serious ramifications beyond season-end, since the drafts of new players for pro baseball, pro basketball and pro (American rule) football are tied to position in the standings. As in other countries, final standings can affect playoff seeding, which as I write this is a hot topic for those following one of the conferences in the NBA. (Only the playoff seeding, and not the draft, seems to apply to the Blades; no US league (not even MLS) uses a relegation system.) Hence why discussions of "magic numbers" can get very involved; also why they're popular among fans of many sports.

Hence, also, why I was discussing it. The board, here doesn't seem to have a similar interest. Lesson learned. Or they don't like my writing (more probable), or the solecisms that showed up (even more probable). Lesson(s) also learned.

Was a good result today, though. The Blades did, after all, clinch a playoff spot because of it.
