The Blades cemented their position in 2nd place as they saw off Bury at Gigg Lane on a bitterly, cold January afternoon. Coming off one of the best performances of the season against Yeovil, United would have been confident going into the game but a less than convincing first half performance threatened to prevent another Blades win. However a much more assured display after the break saw three goals from Cresswell, Evans and Williamson see of the lucky hosts who will feel the scoreline flattered United despite them running out worthy winners in the end.

United began with the same team that started against Yeovil with Beattie remaining on the bench. Bury had Owls loanee Giles Coke on the bench having of course lost Mike Jones who went the other way in the week.

The game began with many United fans still streaming in on 3 sides of the ground as Williamson and Lowton linked up to win an early corner that came to nothing. Lowton put in 2 excellent early crosses that just evaded red and white shirts but it was clear where the Blades threat was coming from.

The opening stages were fairly scrappy and neither side were able to create any openings. Bury actually were nullifying United’s midfield well and were perhaps shading things in this area. The front two were struggling to get hold of the ball and the home side started to get on top with a half chance coming when Amoo got down the right but his cross was cleared. Bury had another opportunity but Amoo this time blazed his shot across the box when well positioned.

United’s first effort came when Evans weak shot was straight at Belford. His next effort was more powerful but unfortunately hit Sodje and deflected wide. Bury were giving as good as they were getting though and Schumacher forced the first save as Simonsen had to push away after sloppy play from United had seen Bury break at speed. Francois made an impressive block tackle to prevent any rebound opportunity.

Lowton and McDonald combined to give the ball away and Worrall outsprinted Maguire but the chance came to nothing. Just before the break Cresswell appealed for a penalty when he seemed to be pulled back but Miller gave nothing. United had not been totally convincing at the break and had created few chances whilst Bury had perhaps looked slightly more threatening.

The second half immediately saw United looked more determined and they seemed to move the ball around with more speed and get the front two into the action more. They had a golden chance on 53 minutes when Lowton fed Williamson and he made a yard of space but looked to have overran the ball before somehow getting a great cross in. It seemed certain Cresswell would head home but somehow he headed wide with the goal gaping.

McDonald played a raking though ball that cut out 2 defenders and CRESSWELL beat the offside trap and was in on goal. He took a touch, steadied himself and clipped the ball over Belford into the corner of the net. A finish that was made to look a lot easier than it probably was.

Not long after the goal Bury came forward and created a really good opening with Worrall making space and hitting a great cross that seemed as if Bishop would convert at the far post but somehow Francois made a timely block tackle that could easily have been a penalty if he had mistimed it. It was a goal saving tackle and was a key moment in the game.

Just after the hour Untied got the vital second goal. McDonald played a clever through ball into the box and EVANS found himself unmarked and as the defenders strangely chose not to go to him. He utilised the space to take the ball on and from the angle hit a fierce right foot drive which went in at the keepers’ near post. Belford may have been a touch disappointed to let the ball squeeze past him but he surely will also not be too happy with his defenders who left the prolific striker unmarked.

United now looked in control and for the next period of the game they played some neat and tidy football whilst defending with determination to prevent any chance of a comeback.

Bury brought on Wednesday man Coke to predictable boos from the United fans and Amoo blazed high and wide as Bury seemed to run out of impetus. McDonald was now pulling the strings in the central area and with Evans and Cresswell looking like different players in the second half, United were well on top. A few passages of football nearly put United in again as Bury were now being pulled all over the place.

With the game entering the final stages, United completely killed off the game. Neat build up saw several passes before Lowton played in WILLIAMSON who sidestepped his man before placing a lovely curling shot with his left foot right into the corner. It was another precise finish for the midfielder who celebrated his third goal in less than a week with the United supporters at this end of the ground.

Williams came on for Quinn and played just in front of Francois and then just before the end of the game Wilson swapped his strikers with Porter and Beattie replacing Cresswell and Evans. Referee Miller played an additional 2 minutes but by the time the game ended many of the Bury fans had already left the ground. At the final whistle, the United players and officials saluted the fans on all three sides of the ground with news that neighbours Wednesday had lost ensuring the red and white side of the city currently have the bragging rights.

United – In the end we won easily, it was another professional and relatively controlled performance. However, it wasn’t the most convincing performance in the first half and United could easily have been behind at the break with Bury having one or two very good chances. We had a lot of players off the game and for the first game I had seen for some time we were second to the ball in many areas and lost the midfield as Bury packed men in this area of the pitch.

United finally awoke from their slumber in the second half and it was a much more determined and assured performance. We started to win more and more loose balls and in turn we passed it better. The front two also held the ball up which they had not done in the first half. We started to find gaps and the Bury defence were getting pulled around with McDonald pulling the strings and ensuring we got balls in behind the channels. We scored from two such balls with lovely finishes from the front two but in between this Francois has made a superb block tackle that prevented a certain goal in my opinion. This was maybe the turning point and allowed us to go on and then get the crucial second goal. We then really cruised to the win and Bury looked more like the side we saw at the Lane early in the season. Another well made and taken goal came from Williamson near the end and United ran out easy winners in the end in a game that had been far from comfortable for long stages.

I did feel we were not quite at it before the break and seemed off the pace. Too many players were sloppy in possession and also we did not do the ugly things. The ball kept coming back and we did not hold it up. It would not have been a surprise if we had been behind at half time but poor finishing and sloppy final balls saved us. I think there may have been words said at half time and we got out and started to get amongst things and also moved the ball forward quicker and got at them. We took the goals well and I felt the defence for the most part were excellent all game. They made timely blocks, key tackles and protected the keeper well.

Next Saturday is a huge game. Charlton will feel if they win they have one foot in the Championship. I actually would take a point and feel we may have to there and stifle them initially and play on the break, maybe a game where Montgomery should play instead of Cresswell and to pack the midfield. Maybe this is negative and we should take the game to them. I am not sure what way I would go but it will be a tough game. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make the game so any reports would be much appreciated!

We need to keep this run going as despite Wednesday’s defeat I do not see them, Huddersfield or Charlton losing more than the odd game in the run in. We need to try and remain unbeaten in the three games against these away but that will be a tough ask. The next 8 or 9 games are crucial. If we can stay around where we are we then have a very good chance with a decent run in but if lose all three of these games then in all likelihood we are probably looking at the playoffs. At the same time though we must continue to pick up points at places like Colchester and Brentford etc and keep winning at home. Of course all the analysis of games could go out of the window if we lose a few players before the end of January. That could the biggest factor in derailing our promotion bid.

I do have to say what a fine job Wilson is doing. He does not come on with bluster and try to colour favour by banging on about things like a certain other manager not too far away but just quietly goes about his job. He has got us well organised, hard to beat (certainly in recent times) and playing some decent football. We may not go up, we may crash out in the playoffs as I secretly fear but he has made it enjoyable to go to the games again after a few years of really turgid stuff. His record is now remarkable, albeit at a lower level as he has won 16/26 games with a win percentage of 62% and we have won/drew 80% of the games in his charge.

Bury – They were much, much better than the game at the Lane and will feel they ought to have been winning at the break but they were not clinical despite some decent football and looking dangerous, particularly down the sides. The left winger Amoo was a handful all game but was marshalled well by Francois and I think Bishop is a decent centre forward who could do well in a better team. The other front lad Worrall had a decent turn of speed and Sweeney in midfield is a good passer of the ball. I also thought the full back Picken got forward well. They do have weak links though and as at Bramall Lane I think the keeper is poor. He made a few mistakes in that game and today I felt he should have saved the second goal. The two centre backs; Sodje and Hughes are very slow and easy to turn. Sodje in particular is a real journeyman and there is a reason he has had so many clubs!

Barker (and Knill before him) has done superbly with limited resources to get them where they are in the pyramid and they are reasonably placed in this league too. They have a wage bill that is dwarfed ridiculously by teams like us so games like this should have results like this but it does not always work like this and for 45 minutes they were well in the game. I think they will probably finish nearer the bottom than the top but they have had some good results at home this season and this form at Gigg Lane ought to keep them away from the danger area.

Simonsen 7/10 – Had little to do as the chances were more missed than at him. I do recall one decent save in the first half but other than taking crosses and fielding through balls the defence protected him really well. Good to see the celebrations with the fans after the second goal where he ran to the crowd and high fived and hugged many Blades in the end behind his goal. Don’t think the stewards were too pleased! The negativity from the fans towards him earlier in the season seemed long forgotten.

Lowton 7.5/10 – He was our best player in the first half and our only real attacking threat. Got down the right and got in a few excellent crosses. Did get out of position a few times; when he may have gone forward too much and they had a few attacks down this side. Second half he actually was not seen as much as an attacking force but did the defensive side a bit better. An excellent footballer who looks so composed in possession of the ball. Despite a blip earlier in the season he does look a player who is capable of playing much higher up the leagues.

Francois 8/10 – Had a ropy start to the game and made a few careless mistakes but then as the game went on he got stronger and stronger and easily made a case as our best player. Made a superb goal saving tackles as a cross came in that looked set to be converted. He had made an earlier one after a Simonsen save too. He made a few other key tackles, blocks and seemed to realise when to hoof it clear and when to try and play football. Seems determined to keep his place now Williams is in the fold full time.

Maguire 7.5/10 – Solid game again. Got outstripped for pace once in the first half when Bury had a chance but other than that he won headers, made blocks and defended sensibly. Used the ball well at times with some lovely cross field balls and in recent times he seems to have realised when he can go long and when he should just keep it simple.

Collins 7.5/10 – Like Maguire he played well against a few lively attackers who tried to get the ball down and bring others into play. He won a number of headers that came into the box and was really assured again despite Bury threatening to stretch us in the first half. I felt we were under pressure more because of the players in front of the defence not keeping/holding the ball than the defenders being poor or making mistakes.

Doyle 7/10 – First half he was not as influential as he has been and actually felt we lost some of the key midfield battles but then we started to do the ugly side better and Doyle was much improved in the second half.

McDonald 8/10 – Much like United it was a game of 2 halves. Like Doyle he was not influential at all in the first half and also quite sloppy with the ball and I felt the game bypassed him and our midfield but he came out and started to dictate the game. He made 2 goals with clever passes; the first one was a superb long through ball. He looked excellent and started to run the game as the ball seemed to be magnetised to him at times. Player of the second half for me. We really need to sort out a contract extension soon as he otherwise we may lose him.

Quinn 6.5/10 – Thought he was one of our poorer players today. He was sloppy with the ball often and continued to try daft flicks instead of getting hold of it. He also was responsible for the Bury full back having a lot of time when they attacked and I felt sorry for Francois who was often against 2 men down that side. He got better in the second half and was more assured in his touch and passing but his performances are up and down at the moment. I felt he did not put the same shift in as many of his teammates.

Williamson 7/10 – Like Quinn he was frustrating for long spells of the game but then still showed real class with his touch and passing. First half he actually seemed to want to pass responsibility on and could not got rid of the ball quick enough giving responsibility to McDonald or Lowton instead of getting down the wing or attacking the full back. He did his defensive side well as he often does helping Lowton when he could. Second half he too was better and actually got down the flank better and passed with more conviction. He put in a great cross which Cresswell should have scored and was involved in some other good attacks. Scored a well taken goal at the end. Has now scored a fair few goals this season and rightly so as he is a good finisher and strikes a ball well.

Evans 7.5/10 – First half I thought he did not quite hold the ball up well enough but was still one of our better players and at least seemed to chase defenders down. Had our only real effort; a shot that looked goal bound deflected wide. Still felt he could do more and in the second half the front two were much improved with their movement and link play with others. Scored a well driven second goal (although keeper was poor on this one I felt) and had a few other efforts.

Cresswell 7/10 – Thought he was really poor first half and that he did not get hold of the ball and it continually shot back off him or the defender was first to the ball. He gave it away a few times with a silly flick or miscontrol. Once they nearly scored from such a moment. In the second half he too improved and was able to hold the ball up better, find our shirts more consistently and of course took a well taken goal breaking the offside trap. Ironically just before this he had missed a great chance when he headed wide from point blank range.

Subs

Williams – Brought on for Quinn and played just in front of Francois to shore up that side defensively as we sought to see the game out. Actually had a few decent moments, including a good run forward where the defender attempted but missed in body checking him.

Porter/Beattie – Both came on right at the end. Beattie had one cross turned behind and Porter had one run but they were not on long enough to make any impact. I do think that maybe the last we have seen of Beattie judging by Wilson’s comments last week (Beattie clearly thinks he should be playing / Wilson still does not think he is fully fit). A shame but at the moment I am not sure how long we/he will wait but unsure if he thinks he will suddenly get picked every week if he goes elsewhere.

Officials – Nigel Miller. Heard bad things about him and I know he has had a few less than convincing games with United before but he was excellent today and maybe one of the best we have had all season. Yes, referee praise which is rare for me as we have had some shockers this season! He only gave fouls if it was really obvious and tried to let the game flow at all times. He always wanted to play advantage and was not fussy if a free kick was taken a few yards away from the foul as long as it did not gain a huge advantage. Kept his cards in his pocket and seemed to speak to the players a lot instead of just trying to be the star of the show. I do think we had a decent shout for a penalty in the first half but it was perhaps not totally clear cut (Cresswell pulled) and also maybe our first goal was offside but could not tell where we were sat if that was the case.

Crowd/Atmosphere – Very odd to be at an away game with 3 sides of the ground being Blades fans and of course behind both goals. Behind one goal where we sat it was completely full and snaked round the corner too. We then had about a third of the main stand too and then the other end of the ground was nearly three quarters full (the pay on the day end). This meant they were nearly 4,000 Blades in a crowd of almost 7,000 (actual figures are 3,738 Blades out of 6,970). Bury had one stand to the side of the pitch and then 2/3’s of the main stand but even those were not full. It was bizarre and by full time there weren’t many Bury fans in the ground. Praise to the stewards for the sensible work when as United fans celebrated behind the goal one fan went to retrieve his hat that had gone over the hoarding and was nearly taken away but a quiet word saw him come back into the stand. Also for not making a fuss when Simonsen decided to join the away fans to celebrate!

Credit to the Bury fans for some decent noise despite the rather annoying drum! United fans were slow to get going but after the break and the goals came in, the noise grew and by the end there were 3 sides of the ground singing. Strange at the end where the players did not know which end to go to as there were literally Blades fans everywhere that made it like a home game.

It was not the most modern of grounds although there are a lot worse in the lower leagues. The stands are all of the same sort of height but outside the ground it all is a bit ramshackle. They did not have beer in the ground and the catering stands were very ‘school disco/youth club’ but it had been good to go to some new grounds as this is another I have never been to before. The ground itself is some way from Bury centre and is in the middle of a housing estate but is a fairly decent area and is not your typical terraced house/Coronation Street style with many detached and fairly big houses near the ground. There were a lot of United fans on the metro going both ways but we made good time and were back in Manchester by 17.30pm which was good going and tucking into our Curry down Deansgate not long after. A few beers around Manchester particularly the Northern Quarter before we headed for home topped off an excellent away day outing.

great work db as usual.. thanks for the report
glad to see that people are starting to realise that quinns postional indiscipline puts the fullbacks under uneccessary pressure.. lowton always plays better with willo for that reason

Stade de France – July 1998 – Olle’s thoughts on yesterday’s game

Travelling back from Donny to London and thought I’d share some more detailed thoughts on yesterday’s game. Deadbat has written an excellent report and saw the game pretty much as I saw it. Not sure how much more I can add to his excellent summary.

Very enjoyable day yesterday, made so by a good result and performance, some decent ale, good company and a cracking atmosphere. Ground number 42 for me. Our trip to Gigg Lane started with the short ride up the M1 and then cross the M62/60. We parked in the Swan and Cemetery pub and sampled some of the local ale. Pubs was full of Blades and we had some good banter before we started.

The match

Deadbat has written an excellent match report and I pretty much saw everything the way he did. It seems I was sat somewhere near him (East stand behind the goal) and we saw most things the same way.

First half was scrappy and poor, from both sides. I thought United were being a bit inpatient and trying too hard. They were trying to force things a little too much. We controlled possession during the opening 20 minutes, but created little. Lowton and Williamson were having some joy down the right hand side and McDonald and Cresswell were involved a lot. Still, we did not work their keeper at all.

Quinn had a half chance early on when Lowton did well, getting to the by-line and crossing, but the Irishman failed to connect. Early doors United had a BIG shout for a penalty turned down when Lowton was manhandled (DB did not mention this). The ball was crossed and Lowton was clearly fouled by the Bury defender. He was all over him and had both arms wrapped around the Sheffielder. The ref took a long look before waving away the incident. It was a clear foul to me and the only reason for not giving it would have been that Lowton would probably not have got the ball (as the keeper came out and caught it). Still, it was a stupid foul to make.

Bury had a couple of attacks that came to nothing, but it was down the other end and I could not see. I was stood directly in line with the crossbar and it blocked my view of the other half. I remember Maguire getting outpaced, but the guy blew his chance. Evans had a weak shot saved and then United had another appeal for a penalty turned down. Cresswell seemed to get goal side of his man and looked like he was in on goal. The defender seemed to pull him back and the keeper got to the ball. Again, it seemed to me a penalty but the referee was having none of it.

The game was fairly evenly poised, with Bury coming back into the game. Still neither side had created anything of note. That almost changed when Simmonsen spilled a low drive and their striker was in on goal, Only an excellent tackle from JFL saved a probable goal. He dove in and made an excellent challenge.

The first half was frustrating and slightly disappointing. However, I thought that if we remained patient we’d get chances and score. I disagree with Deadbat that Bury would have been disappointed not to be ahead. I thought they created little first half and our defence looked pretty comfortable. I thought 0-0 was fair and reflected a poor game.

Second half we stepped it up a gear and Bury had no answer. McDonald’s composure and vision put us ahead. McDonald was facing his own goal when he received the ball. He turned and shimmied and then sent a brilliant 40/50 yard through ball to Cresswell. The veteran striker took a touch and finished brilliantly with his left foot.

This was only seconds after a glaring miss from United. Now here is where I saw things differently to DB. McDonald played in Lowton who got to the byline and centred. I thought it was Evans who missed a glaring header at the near post. It seemed more difficult to miss than score. A free header, 6 yards out and infront of goal. Whether it was Cresswell or Evans it was a terrible miss.

The turning point was a few minutes later when Francois made a brilliant goal saving challenge. Good work by the winger saw a dangerous ball go into the 6 yard box. It was a tap in and a certain goal, before the Haitan defender made a fantastic last ditch tackle. He threw himself in front of the ball and protected United’s lead.

United really started to carve Bury open at this stage and Evans grabbed the second. It was slightly fortunate in that it was poor keeping. Not long after the impressive Williamson finished the game with a good goal, after good work from Lowton.

Second half United were much better. We controlled the game, looked solid defensively and created chances (and finished them). It was not only professional, but we were clinical. We ruthlessly put a hard working, well organised Bury to the sword. Doyle tidyed up and allowed McDonald to work his magic. The latter was exquisite. His vision, composure and range of passing was incredible. He ran the game and was easily the best player on the pitch. That said, Williamson looked classy and when applying the effort made the Bury players look like mugs.

Crimes against football

None. Cannot fault a professional, well organised, hard working team performance. We played decent football and looked to pass throughout. Even in the first half, when we looked a little toothless, we passed it around well.

Crimes against hoof

The main culprit from crimes against hoof was Kevin McDonald. If this really was a crime then he would never come out of prison. McDonald created the goal with brilliant composure, vision and execution. He looked the stand out player on the pitch, particularly second half. First half he was a little quiet and struggled to get a grip on the game. Part of this was that Doyle was poor. However second half Doyle hassled and harried and won the ball and allowed McDonald to pull the strings. K Mac’s passing was excellent, he always finds a red and white shirt and he seems to make himself a yard and create space, even when in tricky situations. We need to sign him on a long term deal!

I should also mention Lee Williamson, who showed what a classy footballer he can be, First half he was not great and was a little nonchalant. He was trying to be too clever and clearly thinking he was better than he is. Still, he has a good touch and good vision. Second half was a different story. He combined well with Lowton, was involved through and scored a good goal. If he applies himself, he could be crucial in our promotion campaign.

Wilson/tactics

I want to give a big shout to Danny Wilson for the job he is doing. He has got the team well organised, highly motivated and playing well. We looked confident, passionate and we can play,. The football is the best I’ve seen in years. Sure it is division 3, but I am really enjoying it. I am impressed by the way he has quietly gone about his business. No bravado, no bullshit. Just gets on with it. He needs to take credit for getting the likes of Doyle, Cresswell, Evans, Williamson and Collins (all terrible last season) playing well. He has also got the best out of McDonald too.
Wilson had the balls to drop Simmo and he came back stronger. The keeper now looks confident and solid,. He also dropped K Mac and criticised his work rate and defensive game. The result is a much improved central midfielder that tracks back and works hard.

Yesterday Wilson clearly put a rocket up their arse at half time. Either that or he told them that to be patient, play how they knew they can and they would get chances. His style suggest it might have been the latter (or somewhere in between). Whatever he said it worked. We won the midfield battle, controlled the game and smashed Bury.

United

That is now 10 wins from 11 games and we were unlucky at Carlisle. We are on fire and Wilson has got it spot on. We’ve seen a mixture of professional performances and some really emphatic victories. We’re playing some decent stuff and look very dangerous, At third tier standard the likes of Quinn, Lowton, McDonald, Williamson and Evans stand out by a mile. Evan Cresswell, Doyle and Collins look a class above. With the players previously mentioned playing well we can tear team apart. And we keep doing so, You are sure that we will create chances and score goals.

Another thing that is really impressive at the moment is our organisation, discipline and solidity. The back 4 are a really well organised unit. With Doyle helping them, they look really solid. We’ve cut out the individual mistakes and are looking comfortable when dealing with teams. Collins has been the player of the season and Maguire has been excellent of late. Lowton has worked on his defensive game and LJF was excellent yesterday. We’ve been lucky to have a settled back 4, with few injuries and suspensions. They have been a revelation this season and we have to thank them a lot for our recent run.

So we are 2nd going into the biggest game of the season next week. Personally I disagree with Deadbat,. We should keep the same team and go to the Valley looking to win. This team has won 10 of the last 11 games and scored 7 goals in the last 2 games, with no reply. Charlton are playing well and are confident, but they will not be looking forward to this. We’re the in form team and the likes of McDonald and Evans are playing the best football of their careers. It will be a really though game and a massive challenge. However, I think we can go there and get a result.

I am confident that we’ll keep picking up points at home. In fact I don’t see any reason why we cannot win all our remaining home games. However we have some really tricky away games. Brentford and Colchester are winnable. We can go to MK Dons and win (imo). The really tricky games are Charlton, Huddersfield and Pigs. We have to play well at these games and stick to our game (football). Charlton are a footballing side and it should be a good game. But Wednesday and Huddersfield will try to bully us out of it. However, I think if we stick to playing pass and move football we can get results at these games.

I’ve been mulling over in my mind, whether this is a promotion season or not. I am not sure. The way we are playing, the way we’re beating teams, our current position and the atmosphere/confidence amongst the fans suggest it is. However we’re in a funny situation where there are 4 very good teams in this division. It will take a big tally to get automatic (more than 90 points imo). We have some tricky games and our results vs the top teams is not great. My gut feeling is that we’ll fall just short. I’ll be able to give you a clearer indication at 5pm next Saturday.

Player ratings

I agree with all Deadbat’s ratings, except for Cresswell. I thought Cressy had a very good game today and was better than Evans. First half he was unlucky. He tried to link up, but got kicked from pillar to post. He had a big shout for a penalty and was perpetually fouled. It was almost embarrassing how many times he was fouled first half and the ref did nowt. He kept his head up, worked hard and got the result,. He took the goal really well. He was a good outlet throughout and worked his socks off. He is brilliant at the first line of defence. I also thought it was Ched that missed the header (I stand to be corrected) and that the criticism of him was unfair.

I’ve already creamed myself about McDonald, so I’ll mention Simmonsen. He did not have a lot to do, but what he did he did it well. He commanded his area and made a couple of saves. He has responded well to being dropped and now looks safe as houses. He took some stick, but has responded superbly. How nice was it to see abit of passion. It was great when he came over to celebrate with the fans for the 2nd goal. You could see it meant a lot to him and he gives a fuck. Keep up the good work SS.

Ref

Disagree with Deadbat a little on the ref. I thought he generally let the game flow and was sensible with his cards, but it bordered on ridiculous how he never bew his whistle. First half, in front of us, he gave us nothing. Lowton fouled in the area. Nowt. Creswell fouled in the area. Niente. Cresswell kicked and manhandled on several occasions. Nada. Rien. Suppose he got a better grip as the game went on and by 3rd division standards he was ok, but first half he just seemed a nuisance.

Atmosphere/ground

How wonderful to see the Blades friendly takeover of Gigg Lane. When I first saw the ground, I though what the fuck is that. It looked like a small, iron shed. However it has a certain charm to it. This was probably helped by there being 3’708 Blades fans in there, taking up 3 corners of the ground.

The atmosphere started well and then got a little flat. Credit to the Burry fans in the corner for making a lot of noise. When the first goal went in it got noisy. As United took hold of the game, the fans came alive. It was great and we made a lot of noise. A really bizarre situation, but lovely to experience. I’ve never been to a game where we’ve taken over like that.. At Oldham we had nearly as many fans as them, but only in one stand. To have United fans filled both ends behind the goal and a stand to the side, was a really sight to see. Glad I made the effort to go to this one.

The experience was made all the better by the excellent staff at Bury. What a lovely, simple, friendly club. From the catering staff to the stewards. The latter were excellent. No problems when we stood the whole game. You barely knew they were there. They dealt with Simmo celebrating with the crowd and that pillock going on the pitch really well. Very sensible and professional. I think I’ll write to the club to say thanks!

And what about the pies. Chuffin delicious! Couldn’t believe it when I bit into my steak pie. Lovely, Had to go back for a second one at half time.

A slight gripe

I do have a slight gripe. It wouldn’t be an Olle post if I did not moan. The ‘he’s Chedwyn Evans, he’ll shag who he wants’ song does my head in. It is horrible and not funny. I am pretty sure that he does not like it either. I am all for banter, non PC and a laugh. However, that song is wrong.

Ale

My quest for real ale and proper football has taken me far and wide this season. This weekend I found them both. Arriving in Donny late on Friday night we went to the whole selection!? We tried some lovely ales in this friendly boozer, but tow stood out. Firstly, Equinox by Great Heck brewery. A hoppy ale, with a bite and a real kick. One of those strong pale ales that is tasty, but slightly dangerous. The other was Dowbridge brewery Praetorian Porter. Apparently this is a champion winter ale and I could see why. A dark, strong, hoppy and intense porter. Absolutely scrumptious.

Before the match, we tried a few Thwaites ales. The best was a drink called Bomber, though the other two (Your Good Elf? and some sort of Original). After the match we went for a few beers in Elsecar (little Dingle village close to where my parents live). Had a delicious stout (Dark Delight I think), a Barnsley Gold, a (heavenly) Jaipur, Rock Ale (by Wentworth) and an ale called cereal killer, The latter was the best of the ales (a mild, yet strong in volume, creamy ale) and the stout was excellent.

Thanks guys. I was stuck at work yesterday, but listening in you've got it covered between the two of you. Great day all round, with the only gripe being tuning into P&G after and hearing some total numpty prattling on about the French!

I think we should change the words "shag who he wants" to "score when he wants". Thats what I told my 5yr old thats what were singing to him. Ched can do no wrong for my son. Favourite player by miles. He has now been to 5 games and seen 16 united goals and The only goal machine in Sheffield has scored in every game

Wholeheartedly agree with this. Hopefully Ched is completely innocent of the accusation, but if he's not he deserves nothing but contempt. People 'excusing' it (even if not seriously) with a song like that need to take a long hard look at themselves and try to imagine it was their daughter who'd been the victim of sexual assault.

Anyway, good performance from United, another good goal from Ched, and by all means let's cheer him (innocent til proven guilty) but please, let's drop that song.

Another gripe

Whilst on the subject of gripes, I have another. The singing of Beattie's name whilst he was not on the pitch. Now, I know that BT is a fans hero and all that, but what about the rest. Cresswell put in an excellent lead the line performance and took his goal well. Evans is on fire and of course scored. Ched gets a song about how it is ok for him to rape someone and Cresswell gets nowt. They worked their bollocks off on Saturday and Mr VFM sits there warming the bench and gets 3k people singing his name. Don't get me wrong, I had a great day, but this pissed me off. The fans refuse to sing Wilson's name, but BT (pulling a slary and offering nothing since December) gets everyone singing. How about singing Neil Collins name? Player of the season, rock solid and one of the main reasons we have an excellent defensive record and are battling for promotion. Same goes for 18 year old Sheffielder Maguire or Lowton, who's attacking down the right flank has been phenomenal. Lescinel Jean Francois made not one, but two, goal saving challenges and not a peep. McDonald is possibly the best player in the division at the moment and has worked hard on his fitness and tracking back. Doyle is a completely reformed character and looks like a third tier Emmanuel Petit. Yet BT, no goals for 2 years, dragging a salary and played 10 mins football gets the whole away end (except for me) singing his name.

Its only because he's got a song to fit ,we used to sing about Bruno Ribeiro , one of the worst players ever to play for the Blades for the same reason. The Beattie situation is slightly different in that when the away fans and players see we are bringing Beattie on after running them ragged they must be thinking Oh shit.

Gripe Gripe

BT Song - I like it, sure there are a lot of players that play well, but BT is adored by so many and if fans want to sing then let them. Personally I love the BT song, when I heard it on RS on Sat it was clear that he was warming up. And its spontaneous by the crowd. Its not piped music like the Tom fucking hark song when we score.

Ched Song - He's not been convicted of anything, its different if/ when he is. Personally I think his case will be laughed out of court. But we'll see.

Watched highlights and it was definitely a Williamson cross and Cresswell header wide; just before we scored.

I forgot about the Lowton penalty; I actually did not think that one was and more of a tangle of bodies. He did not realy appeal. The Cressy one he had a hold of his shirt but he helped the ref by staying on his feet; sometimes Cressy is actually too honest.

Well said. I've not heard it sung at the Lane, but just reading it on the message boards makes me queasy. Never liked the Monty song either, for that matter.

Whether or not Ched will be found guilty is immaterial (though I hope not and that the verdict is correct). There's just nothing funny in that subject.

Message from Bury fan;

"Congratulations on being the first supporters to outnumber us at Gigg since City if memory serves. Well beaten by a good team I’d say. Looked like you could probably crank it up at anytime really. Mind you, that first one must have been 3 yards offside. Easily the best team I’ve seen this season and that includes Huddersfield and the Pigs. Not seen Charlton yet mind."

Yep, apologies. I was clearly not paying attention (or need to go to Specsavers). Terrible miss from Cressy. I thought both were pens and the Lowton pen was more obvious. The tackle from LJF to stop them scoring at one nils is just sublime. Knight him!

Nice to hear. When you actually look at our first team and the experience we've got you can see why people might say that. Other than LJF, the whole team has played at a higher standard than this consistently. I wouldn't mind betting our wage bill is the highest either. As much as I've criticised them, players like Quinn, Willo, K Mac and Ched can tear teams in this division apart.

>players like Quinn, Willo, K Mac and Ched can tear teams in this division apart
i reckon they could tear most championship teams apart as well. it's all in the management.. i see that dyer won MoM yesterday and Britton was likened to Xavi.. says it all really..

Deservedly so too. Talent needs to be invested in, not trampled.

Oh what could have been! Exiled to South Wales (by our favourite manager) for crimes against hoof :D

Thanks for the great report and additions. Excellent read.

Regarding the Beattie song, I like it, it's great to hear it and we should sing it, but I also agree that we should back the guys on the pitch with a song or two as well.

How quickly some forget that Britton was a bottler...

Bottle comes in various forms, and a player willing to accept the ball in tight midfield areas and take responsibility for keeping possession is one I'd say has it in spades.

Just watched the highlights again (for the fourth of fifth time). McDonald's contribution to the first goal is just immense. Wins the ball in centre mid, dummies and defies two players, turns, makes some space and then sends a 50 yasd pass into the path of Cresswell. I thought that 'numpty' on Radio Sheff was crackers, when he likened him to Zidane, but now I am not so sure!?

showed plenty on sunday.. how quickly we forget that he was paired with the meastro.. the midfielders graveyard

Britton built his reputation on being the defence to midfield link man, no passes over 15 yards but lots of them to keep the ball ticking over whist moving the opposition around. First time he and Swansea came to the Lane we touched it about three times in the first 20 mins (to kick it out). However, in that time they rarely ventured in to our half and certainly didn't have a shot. That example of 'football' is not for me. However I did see Britton as being an important link in terms of us changing style. Only we didn't change style and clearly never practised any kind of pass and move play in training. We just did what we had been doing with a confused looking Britton wondering where he was supposed to be and why no-one ever gave him the ball back.

As a 'Deschamps - water carrier' he's very good.

Maybe he'd have a successful role in the Blades France 98 line up.

I'm sure he played very well for us for Swansea. But... I was really targetting Ollie with my comment.

And when he played for us, he showed that he had no bottle for the fight and was off as quick as a flash.

Rats, sinking ships

I was on the west stand on Sat (the end where all the goals were scored :) ) In the first half as we look at it the top right corner at the other end were singing something and bouncing. What were they singing? Please do not say
