I though it was Lebensraum he was after and world domination. Oh and no Jewish people and other people he didn't like.

That was indeed what he was after long term, but his immediate Polish demands were fairly reasonable if looked at purely from a self determination perspective. The western allies (rightly) took the view that this was about power politics and something had to be done and that all this guff about self determination was so much cant (as it usually is).

Genuine question: Doesn't the League North count as an honour?

I wasn't aware of this one at all.
No, I dont think so. The regristration rules werent strict and all the teams played a lot of "guest" players. FA Cup 1945-46 was a proper competition (won by Derby) and the regristration rules were almost the same as it was before the war

I could be wrong, but I don't think there were any guest players in 45-6 (there were in the previous 6 seasons, obviously).

I think it should do.

The war had ended, but because Britain was bankrupt, there was much government imposed austerity and limits on non-essential travel. Hence the division to north and south leagues. However, it was a proper league system, no guest players and pretty competitive. Essentially, we were one of the top two teams in 45-6, a position we have never reached since.

It's the 70th anniversary next season. The club should do something with the surviving players (if any) and their relatives.

Teams were still using guest players in 1945-6 league games (though United did not - we were relatively stable).

"Soccer at War" by Jack Rollin lists all appearances and goals for each club and denotes who was a guest player. There were many in 1945-6, though less than in previous years.

Fair enough. I still reckon it is worth celebrating :-)

Random memories* are that we lost the first game 6-0 at Newcastle and lost 7-2 at home to Middlesbrough in December when a left back by the name of Troth apparently had a mare and never played again.

* Not literally. Obviously.

Just checked 1945-46 players in Complete Records, I was surprised that Harry Hooper (our captain in 1936 FA Cup final) played in 6 league and 3 FA Cup matches that season. Albert Cox and Jimmy Hagan were still in the Armed Services awaiting demobilisation and didnt play many games. Herbert Knott (Hull City) guested for us in 5 matches and Joe Troth (1 game) might have been another guest player

Troth wasn't a guest (see above). He was an out of depth reserve!

I went to that match . About 100 blades went .Hull IMO were trying to throw the game .It was a bit like Wednesday v Man City , when a couple of players had not read the script.

UTB

There were a few more than 100 I think

Yes, Roger Hansbury was on loan to us in 1987-8.

Hull sold Marwood, their best player, to the Pigs in the close season and still went up the year after. Imagine that - a team just going down or just missing promotion and going up the following season. We can only dream of doing that.

I have never heard of any other game where there were fans of 3 different clubs there in reasonable numbers. It can't happen now as everyone has to finish on the same day, but I wonder whether it has happened on other occasions. I assume that there would have been a few Blades at Pigs v Spurs in 1950, when they went up with a 0-0 draw but a Spurs win or high scoring draw would have sent us up in their place.

I remember a match v Chelsea at the Lane. There was a large Leeds mob on the Bramall Lane end squaring up to the equal size Chelsea mob. I think Leeds should have been playing in the East Midlands but there match was postponed

Another time 3 sets of fans went to a game , involved us going to toytown mob handed , when they played
Newcastle, think our game was postponed v Bradford, wasn't to cheer on either team either,
100+ went got a bit naughty at times , we all went on Toytowns end , before going up the side bit towards the mags
Plenty of hassle in that shed of a bus station after as well .
