Does anybody get the impression that there isn't any money for Adkins and that he has to sell or cut the wage bill before buying?
There are a lack of rumours and Nigel keeps mentioning that he needs to look at everyone before adding. I suspect it more likely he's looking at who he can sell / release.
I'm not surprised by a lack of budget (if Im right), as we have enough players to put two decent league 1 sides out. The club put a lot of trust in Clough and pretty much signed who he wanted. They have also had to pay off Clough as well as pay Adkins.
Or am I thinking too much into it?

I don't doubt that we already have players capable of promotion. Personally I'd be happy with a keeper and centre back on loan and another cheap experienced league 1 centre back, just for a season to get us out of the league.

We spent a lot last year and we are rather stuck with the wages that Brayford and Coutts are on, these were players who came down from a higher division and won't be on peanuts.

If Brayford wasn't injured I think we may have been looking to move him on already this summer for various reasons.

I suppose it all comes down to whether you think the problem last season was with the players or the tactics.....:)
I think both. In reply to the OP I'd have been in favour of a squad trim, because it definitely needs trimming, but only if it had come earlier. Don't think there's time now to get rid, then find suitable replacements within a matter of weeks. Looks like we're heading for a bloated squad season again.:)

That's a matter of opinion and a bit like saying anyone that's signed in the January window can't have any effect.
As for culling the squad I would imagine he doesn't want to lose anyone until he knows what he's got down here, isn't that's how we got players like Jag's, Tonge, and lately Addams ?
They used to say it takes three season before a manager can call it "His squad" but let's face it in today game for any manager to get a run of three seasons he's going to need a lot of luck, especially in the transfer market where one bad signing is never forgotten or forgiven by some..

Anyway aren't most transfers deals in or out done on the last day ?

Yep. I concur.
Just added as such to my "Wad" thread before I read your post.

It smells deeply of fish doesn't it?

I reckon that Phippsy has an old mother Hubbard costume to wear at board meetings.

I would think it's pretty obvious that cutting the wage bill is the problem, we must be very near the limit..

Sorry I duplicated this thread b78, never saw it.

Whilst we need players who can get us out of this division above all else, I'd question the sanity in getting shut of Brayford (unless he'll only play for Clough) considering our aim to go up, at which time, Brayford becomes average to good at Championship level with us. This applies to others too but we are over resourced in those other areas...

I think the point may be that if Adkins was looking at his needs in the overall squad and had £1.5m to spend plus a big wage for us on a 3 year contract, one of the last positions he would be looking at would be full back, even with Brayford long term injured.
