Bruce: I was a terrible manager at Sheff Utd

Ah...the ol' promised 'dosh'...

He played for us beforehand so he must have known we were skint!
Don't rate him as a manager and would love to see that smug expression wiped off his face on Sunday.

No he didn't, He came in as player manager.

You cant deny he hasnt done well at Hull Tigers?

He left us under abit of a cloud but i suppose if your promised something & then told to actually sell then you would be pissed off.

in all these articles he seems to say the dibble were going to arrest him when he took our players off. How on Earth could they have any right to do that?

It's a pretty rubbish story if you ask me, but a typical media angle on things in the build up to a major Cup Game. I for one got fed up of reading about the apparent forgone conclusion of a Poyet Family meet-up in the Semis ahead of the Charlton match.

As for Bruce, has anyone heard him ever mention his time at United since he left in 1999? Well, has anyone? Most people I mention it to, largely knowledgable football fans, hadn't a clue he'd ever been our manager.

If we play Wigan in the final what on earth can the press dig up then? Apart from THAT match in 2007 of course, but on such a positive weekend let's not bring up The Shadow Of The Past.

Alan Hodgkinson was one of the biggest influences in Bruce's football career as Hodgy was the assistant manager to Gerry Summers (another ex-Blade) at Gillingham

There were a few unfortunate things that were clearly out of his control that happened in his time:

- Saunders deciding to head to Benfica just at the point that he and Katman were putting together a decent partnership
- Having to spend an evening getting John Deehan released from the police after the incident at QPR
- the rapid failure of his body, which saw him go from a decent debut at Palace to a horror show in his last game as a player, as Michael Bridges repeatedly placed him on his arse in the 4-0 drubbing vs Sunderland
- the Kanu/Overmars fiasco
- the panic sales of Stuart, Holdsworth and Borbokis as financial pressures increased
- The Count

That said, some of his questionable decisions clearly he had full influence over included:

- a narrow tactical approach where he would often insist on 4-4-2, despite us having the league's two best wing backs arguably. Trying to cram both players into roles as wingers never worked well
- the total mishandling of Try Dellas, who was so annoyed at the lack of opportunities given him that he just headed back to Greece in the summer rather than take up the year's option on his contract
- the arguable mishandling of David Holdsworth, who by the sounds of it he had a huge personality clash with
- the signing of Ian Hamilton
- the signing of Jonathan Hunt

I was actually pretty relieved he left when he did, as I really didn't see him being a success with us. Clearly on a long learning curve at the time - he was similarly terrible at Huddersfield, where he was allowed to spend quite a bit of cash.

Sorry Brucey - Hamilton was signed a year before. Though it was your decision to pair him with Hunt in the worst midfield I can recall us playing.

His debut was in the opening game v Swindon. There was a flare up in the middle of the pitch, he tried to seperate the players and got punched in the face by Darren Bullock (the ref missed it)

Interesting - I'd completely forgotten he started the season, and was at that match myself! The first thing I remember him doing was winning motm in the Palace game.

Michael Twiss was an inspired signing though. The next Ryan Giggs, just needed some game time. I saw him several times and have no memory of anything he did.

I think 8th considering the turmoil was good. I liked Curtis Woodhouse's story about the time Bruce called him in to his office about his after hours havoc causing. Curtis promised him it wasn't him as he'd never set foot in, and promised he never would ever go to the Treadmill nightclub. . . However, he did continue getting royally drunk in the Leadmill with a clear conscience.
