Quite a sweeping generalisation of many people in our fan base there.

Not doubting that some fit into this pigeon hole, but i bet there are a damned sight more SUFC fans out there who don't fritter money away or buy the latest iphone, and yet are still skint. There's plenty of people (and Sheffield has more than it's fair share) of people who don't have two penny's to rub together through no fault of their own. To think otherwise is just naive or maybe a bit arrogant. A bit of 'I'm alright Jack' maybe?

I have to disagree on this one.

Luckily for me and my clan, I have done well in my career and I have had, and continue to get the financial rewards that go with it. However my nephew for example is a different matter. He has a young family and cannot afford either a season ticket or to attend a lot of the home games at the Lane on a game by game basis, as financially he is in a different place to me. He is however just as big a Blade as me, and whilst both me and my brother have offered to buy him a season ticket, he wouldn't have it as he 'has his pride....' (I understand his viewpoint but fuk me it's only me and his old man chucking a few hundred quid his way so I don't see it as charity in any way as he's my family, but i respect his opinion).

Bottom line, is that he goes when he can and when the finances allow. There will be many like my nephew who can't just chuck a few extra quid at it, or who can easily find a few hundred quid a year as the income just isnt there for them at the moment.

Utd have the prices about right imo, and they balance the books nd run the club as well as any club in football does these days. I think they have it right, though I would like to see a few more £10 admission games in the league from time to time (yes I know the cup game is a tenner tomorrow).

Some people can afford it, some can't. But the vast majority of people fall into the middle category where better planning of their finances would mean they could pay more, it's all hypothetical anyway. I just said I'd pay more if better quality players could be bought.

Well said Nick, but unsurprisingly it's just the latest in a long line of worrying, sometimes disturbing, posts from Topplayersleave.

His/her initial posts used to suggest that he/she employed islamic rhetoric as a gauge by which judge the behaviour of others. If I recall, other posters (HillmortonBlade was one if I recall. Apologies if I'm wrong on that one) quickly jumped on this, suggesting that it was both frivolous and dangerous to employ ideas that the poster may not actually believe in. The responses to this were vapid and hardly convincing. Since then, a post such as this seems to have moved away from the belief system of muslims and now he/she employs reactionary twaddle based on no more than a need to cast aspersions on a socio-economic group that's a soft target for anyone lacking in hard facts. As usual, Topplayersleave is wrong on most points, so your post was completely right in dismissing his/her guff for what it is, poorly thought out and cruel.

Now is the time to back the manager with some serious funds as we have the best chance in thirteen years to go up. I would back Wilder to not waste it.

Unfortunately the dispute and egos at the top will stop that. McCabe did back Warnock in jan 2006 but he may not own the club in 6 months so won't invest and princey certainly won't.

Maybe some can't afford an increase, but I think if somebody is on the absolute breadline they wouldn't be going to football matches anyway, there's always ways to save a few hundred extra quid a year to pay for an increase in season ticket prices without it affecting the majority of people's lifestyles

For the first time this season I havent bought my season ticket outright and used the finance option simply because I wasn't in a position to pay the full whack at the time of the renewals. Hoping I wont have to do it again this season but it wouldnt matter if I did because I know I can afford the payments each month. The problem becomes when people who cant afford it outright but also cant afford those monthly payments. These companies who charge stupid amounts of interests are the ones to blame because they prey on those who cant afford it because they know they cant get finance anywhere else. This type of consumerism is the biggest issue in terms of poverty in the country regardless of what the press tell you.

To get back on topic I think our prices are some of the most reasonable in the division, especially when you consier the type of football we are watching week in week out. I dont particularly mind if there is a minor price increase this season because lets be honest more often than not our prices remain frozen every year. In terms of the Brooks money I dont think people realise how much loans actually cost. Nowadays clubs taking players on loan tend to pay a large percentage of the wages plus the add ons as well as an up front fee and in some cases like the Dowell loan penalties if they don't play. The inital outlay of a permanent transfer is probably quite similar to that of a loan given that most permanent transfers are paid in installments anyway.

Why not purchase a box for the season or sponsor something?
Invite a young niece, nephew or family friend to attend and pay for them?
If you have extra money to spend, and you want to throw it United’s way, there’s loads of ways to do it without wanting to put attending games further out the reach of anyone else.
As a club we want as many people to be able to attend as possible while obviously balancing the books so we all continue to have a club to follow.

Fine sentiments - but year upon year, we're not actually balancing the books, so I suppose the question is, can the club squeeze a little more out of the fans, to help reduce the persistent overdraft - bearing in mind the quality of football that we're now seeing?

Exactly, and I’d rather balance the books through the latter and keep attendances up.
The lifeblood of the club is the fans coming through and we mustn’t look to alienate anyone. If we have fans who can afford more then there are plenty of ways you can contribute more without removing the possibility of watching United live from anyone less fortunate.

One thing i find quite annoying is when anyone criticises the club for lack of funding etc etc there is an automatic assumption people reply with saying that they want us to spend like Wednesday have. Like the only options available are being severely poorer compared to are upper championship rivals or selling yourself down the shitter like the pigs. A middle ground needs to be achieved as improved investment is needed if this club is to progress. Chris Wilder deserves it for what he has done for are club in such a short period of time.

A loss of £5m-£10m per year isn’t exactly balancing the books is it? It relies on cash from the owners, outside of sport this generally doesn’t happen apart from basket case businesses or vanity projects.

Agreed on the point about the fans though, we’d never keep prices affordable and sufficiently bridge the gap.
