For the last couple of years they have tooted a rebranding of the club and hinted at the use of crossed swords in referce to their maritime history and Pirates nickname.

But on sky news I have just stumbled upon an article with Kier Starmer holding up the Rovers shirt and I am saddened to see the crossed swords or scimitars on proud display on the upper rear of the shirt. How much of our club logo is trademarked or copyrighted (which ever applies). For me they are already infringing on our identity! Whilst they have the maritime history, we have used the clubs crest for decades now.

It actually bothers me, is it just me?

I agree next thing will be for them to change colours to red and white (not red cos City are red)
Then they can rent our mascot on match days!!!

I always think it’s a bit ironic we use this shape of blade on our badge as this type of blade, as far as I know, was not one that was ever made in Sheffield. (Except maybe recently in connection with the club.).

There were thousands of blade designs that were and still are made in the city but not cutlasses - unless someone knows differently…

Charlton have a sword on there badge
Ours is related to our cities industry plus we have the white rose so we have proud history of our city and county

Aren’t they actually Arabian Scimitars rather than cutlasses, which came in several forms?

Was intrigued so did a google.

Seems Cutlasses were made in Sheffield. Fenton Bros were Sword cutlers to the war office and made Cutlasses. I Sorby also made Cutlasses and I saw one from them that was bought at Auction that was made in the late 1700s for the Royal Navy. Probably more makers also but those two popped up straight away so Sheffield does have a history of Cutlassas, but are our swords on the badge even Cutlassas?

Bristol rovers are my second team and we had a consultation about a badge change last season where my comments were ‘don’t change the badge’ and ‘it looks like Sheffield utd’ so I agree.

When first founded, they were called Black Arabs FC, so they are going with that theme now. Should be fine.

More Google research so a Scimitar were used for in general horseback fighting due to them being longer than Cutlasses, Cutlasses are shorter and designed for more up close combat especially on ships and used by Pirates. However looking at the versions it looks like ours is closer to the larger Scimitar especially when it comes to shape and size (ooh err).
