Bristol City head 2 head

Yet another club where Sheffield United take the upper hand in the all time record

Blades wins - 33

Draws - 12

Bristol city wins - 16

The first meeting was a 3-1 blades win away from home in the FA cup I’m not quite sure which ground this was played at, the moved to their now home Ashton gate in 1904 and played at St John’s lane before that, due to this fixture being played in February I’m presuming it was played at St John’s lane. By the way Bristol city used to be known as Bristol south end, something I never knew.

Between 1910/11 and 1956/57 we never played the robins but in the latter season we lost 1-5,

A few seasons later in 59/60 the highest scoring fixture between the two sides took place which was a 5-2 victory for us at the lane in Division 2

Perhaps the most famous of fixtures between the two clubs was the division 2/3 play offs the first leg at Ashton gate was 1-1 and marred by violence in the stands which spilled onto the pitch.

This was the year before the Hillsborough disaster and there’s some interesting views on the use of barriers on this news piece about the violence that day.

In 1992 we played them twice in the league cup or the Coca Cola cup as it was know from that season until 1998. We lost the first leg 1-2 away from home but in the second leg we won them 4-1.. however I’m sure most blades and especially Harry Bassett would’ve rather have gone out than Dane Whitehouse break his leg

since I’ve started looking into head to heads and posting about random games I’ve tried to steer clear from the 2008-2015 era for obvious reasons that don’t need explaining however I’ll make an exception for the 3-2 victory in November 2009 at Ashton gate where a Darius Henderson hat trick the last of which was the 90th minute winner. The lineup for that game was

Carl Ikeme in the net (remember him)

Kyle walker

Andy Davies

Matt killgallon

Chris Morgan

James Harper (who)

Nick Montgomery

Stephen Quinn

Lee Williamson… (I’d rather forget)

Jamie Ward

Darius Henderson

There’s a couple of reasons in that lineup of why we’re relegated that season.

November in the 21/22 season and Rhian Brewster.. YES Rhian Brewster opens the scoring in a 2-0

My most memorable game against Bristol City

Am i missing something? Apologies if so. But, seriously, can you explain why omitting 2008-15 is significant?

I’ve just got nothing but bad memories from that period apart from semi finals against Hull and Spurs. Relegation to league one and then 6 years in there. I know it’s all part of being a football fan but it’s a dark period for my memory.
I’ve only been posting on here for my own boredom, I try to pick high scoring games or significant games or sometimes just something random. I’ll dig deeper into the actual match if I’ve got time sometimes I don’t. I’ve only got a limited amount of threads to do anyway.
Blackwell —> Adkin’s was a torrid time

The trouble shown in the video was not during the playoff game in 1988, it was during the last game of the season the following year in 1989. You can tell for sure because Deano is playing in the game and he was not with us during the playoff match.

We also weren't relegated the year we won 3-2 with the Henderson hattrick. We went down the following season.

Our record at Bristol City was shite for about 40 years until the Henderson game, and since then it's been decent. The 3-1 win there in 2014-5 was particularly impressive as City lost only 5 games all season and that was only one of 2 home defeats: it's a very, very rare example of us winning away against the team that ultimately won the division. Funnily enough, as we have got better down there, our home record has got worse, with 3 defeats in a row between 2014 and 2019.

Apologies, I usually write a post out and then try and then go and try to double check it. Not this time though !

Forgive me if I'm wrong but we finished 8th in 09/10? That team is relatively strong?

Was Lee Williamson that bad? For some reason, my only memories of him are the 2011/12 season, it's almost a complete mind blank before that - I don't think just accounts for Williamson I guess haha, the whole era from Burnley play-offs onwards gives me nightmares, so easier to erase from my mind

Also to quote myself - As somebody with Gus Uhlenbeek as their profile, I have low standards
