Alarming how our fortunes in just under two years have gone in contrasting directions is staggering

1-0 away win at AmEx almost two years ago, put us 5th in the Prem. Wilder afterwards claimed we had ‘structure, organisation, desire.’ Loads of Blade singing with joy on the train afterwards. We thought the good times had returned.

Roll forward.

We are now 17th in the Championship, Brighton are 7th in the Premier (no bigger club than us).

Hard to take. Ultimately owner is to blame.

One thing for sure, don’t now have ‘structure, organisation and desire’.

The good times seem a long long way off reet now

Wilder to blame - not the owner

Disagree Brighton are a bigger club than us now, we just have to get used to it.

Brighton have a fantastic owner in Tony Bloom who has put them on a upward trajectory for the past decade. He’s a fan with genuine wealth who has consistently made shrewd managerial appointments. The club have also recruited well from overseas which has played a big part in establishing them as a top-flight club. They are basically everything we’re not.

We were unfortunately a flash in the pan and a one season wonder, the opportunity was there to invest and get in better players, the downside was it put the financial position of the club at risk with bigger transfer fees and higher wages
That’s where you need the billionaire owners to back and underwrite the investment for a long term strategy
We bought a load of second rate players by the looks of it, not Premiership quality and the opportunity was lost

I remember going to the toilet after the Brighton game and the Blades fans in the concourse singing "We're Sheff United - unbeaten away". Great times.

i remember walking around the Withdean thinking 'there but for the
grace of God go us'
It's a funny old game.
I'm old enough to remember the tumbledown Goldstone Ground with well under 10,000 in it + a club on its knees about to get evicted.
I also remember their FA Cup SF v the pigs in the early 80s when they could take 30,000.
There is so much money in the PL now , it's unfortunately about being lucky enough to hit your sweet spot just at the right time , under a wealthy owner.
Apart from the big boys funded by foreign money , the old industrial North is fucked because most of the money in the UK is in London & the SE.
Just glance through the 92 + compare it to the 60s or 70s.
Money talks.

No you can't

Ever thought we might have been in a worse position ?
Was going to post similar , not getting in seasoned pros
Deeney and Foster from Watford for instance as I said last season, along with the newer younger signings to guide them
Equal Blame all around
Our fans biggin us up after 1 season didn’t help either
Up in 2 is my mantra , sort it out / rebuild this season push on next year

Brighton we’re prepared to pay big wages, we were not.
Hence why we ended up with Mcburnie and not Maupay

Receiving the best wages wasn’t his main incentive….he wanted to stay close to London….the area he knows and likes.
We needed to pay much higher than Brighton were offering to tempt him.
Palace and Brighton were always likely to be his first choice.

True

But we all knew this - transfer fees are one thing but wages are week to week cash flow and we hadn't got the funds . We knew this , CW knew this , i want a ferrari but i cant afford it so ill make do with a lesser car but it meets my needs and does the job just fine.- i won't buy a car that is unproven or too old to get me from a to b .

He had one bad season where we were awful & so was he in his actions to the board. But every other season he was worshiped by the fans & stuck with the club despite the ownership fall out.

Let’s not throw him under a bus. I’d take him back tomorrow now he’s had the mental break and assessed where he went wrong

Prince may not have any money, but he’s got a great PR machine.

Has free reign to say what he likes while Wilder is gagged by an NDA.

So we don’t hear both sides of the story and yet the vitriol directed at Wilder means no there is no room for any criticism of the prince. He may be broke but he isn’t daft.

And I like him BTW and think he wants to take us forward. But some of the comments across many threads about Wilder and how all our problems are his fault are not only over the top but are based on one sided conjecture.

Good points Millhouses
I’d have stuck with him even after we’d been relegated,
I’ve said on here before I’d have kept him till Xmas of this season see were we are then , then make a decision
I think it was his attitude towards the board , and his almost wanting them to sack him
Plus his unshakable belief that our team would turn it around be not changing tactics/ players / formation dirtied his bib in my book I mean playing a player who clearly was fucking off didn’t help even though every single fan disagreed with him about playing him
not playing his biggest signing even knowing we were down to get him used to his system for this season as well was another mistake
Also knowing JOC was out / finished for the whole of the season and not getting a replacement was an even mistake from him in my book
Like I said some good points well made

Wilder’s side of events has been put forward, on Twitter by his mates.

No offense WYB
But every manager who gets sacked has a ND agreement in place
When I was made redundant in my previous job and took them to court over it
A non disclosure agreement was signed by both parties
Me and them

What have they said?
How do we know they are his mates and represent his views?
Twitter is hardly a credible source.

Yes fair enough.
But let’s take transfers as an example.

Yes some of wilders purchases look pretty poor now. But we don’t know who else he was after and why those deals didn’t happen. And the Prince is hardly likely to admit any blame for deals that went wrong while Wilder can’t give his reasoning for example buying a load of dud strikers and no CB’s.
Maybe down to him cocking up sure, but we just don’t know.

It’s always quite cryptic but they just refer to the Prince having no money regularly & Bettis being a snake.

This then causes issues with the fans when we’re not doing very well, everyone’s looking for someone to blame at the moment & unfortunately I think some of our own fans are enjoying watching it unfold
