Steve Bruce the manager version was dealt a crap hand as he had no transfer funds when he was our manager I think he signed the I’ll fated Michael Twiss from Man Utd on loan as for Billy McEwan well he had a hard act to follow after Porterfield and again we were skint after spending good money on wages on Withe,McNaughton, Eves, Thompson and Burridge as per usual feast of famine at the Lane
In the Sheffield United Biography, there is a story about Bruce's time at United that summed things up at the club. Apparently he turned up at the ground one day and Dean Saunders was coming out and going to his car. He asks Dean where he's going to which Dean replies, "I've been sold to Benfica". Bruce was livid but then realised he didn't know who to complain to such was the board chaos at the time.

With McEwan, we'd gone from thinking like a First Division side when we were in the 4th Division to thinking like a 4th Division side when we got to the 2nd Division. McEwan didn't help himself by falling out with Edwards who then signed for Leeds.

I recall Porterfield tried to sign players like Peter Nicholas and Ray Houghton (then at Oxford) but was blocked by the board, so instead turned to aging players for nominal fees.

Steve Bruce would have shat on us and moved club at the first opportunity regardless of what happened in the board room, he's done it to every club he's been at. He had no affinity to us and we were always a stepping stone.

It's a good thing we didn't give him any money! If he'd been successful he'd have fucked off ASAP (possibly to proper rival - something else he's proven to have no qualms about doing, time and time again), leaving the next manager stuck with his shitty signings.

I hated watching us when he was there, but seems a decent bloke and was a top player of course.

Maybe I’m judgemental, but I think he should have known his limitations (and his weaknesses) and never taken on such responsibility.

If you’re not up to driving a car, don’t pick up the keys.

For me like many others I still can't work out what went wrong in 07/08 we had an experienced manager in Robson and even more experienced assistant manager in Kidd who came from the England assistant job after his spell with Man U and Leeds. When on our day we could put out a side of

Kenny
Geary , Kilgallon, Morgan, Naysmith, Gillespie, Tonge, Speed, Quinn (S)
Beattie (J) Sharp
With the likes of Hulse, Stead, Hendre and Webber on the bench

If you couldn't win with a team of quality players featuring 5 Internationals he definitely deserved to go. We even had Gary Cahill and Phil Bardsley in on loan in the early days of that season

i'll work it out for you, we had a pissed up manager who was absolutely useless at management.

Even that clown Blackwell nearly turned it round.

No one at the time thought Robson was a good idea, even the bookies lengthened our odds of promotion the day he was appointed. This was an absolute monumental fuck up by Mcabe and started the chain of events that led to us been stuck in the 3rd Division for 6 fucking years.

Wow, honestly forgot what a good squad that was, I mean that's one of the strongest I've seen in my time watching us over the last 30 odd years.
