Since the last Billy Sharpe thread, things have been quiet on the msislpinleg front, although prospects look promising for our new leader SJ.

You know what, I thought it might be a y, but I just couldnt be arsed to check. Which just about sums up my feelings about him as a manager. Now had it been a favourite player, manager, I would have double checked.

I think we must all have seen Robson somewhere, either that or there must be lots of doppelgängers doing the rounds. I was sat at the next table to him in a cafe just outside the Colliseum, in'Rome. Mentioned it to our lass but she seemed nonplussed.

If you squint you can see McCabes reasoning. Robson was still somewhat rated at the time after Boro and keeping West Brom up. He was closely associated with the England team when Venables was manager and his captain marvel persona from his playing days still had a bit of lustre

McCabe was no Steve Gibson though, and Robson was a busted flush by that point.

Statistically maybe not, but considering the resources Robson had available, the long term damage he did to our club through signing awful players on massive contracts, and the fact that a manager of Blackwell’s calibre managed to turn the team around instantly, makes him our worst ever manager for me.

Harsh that. His only bad signing was Hendrie. It’s the only good thing he did

Many moons ago I worked in a hotel near Accrington, often the teams playing Blackburn would stay there, West brom did when Robson was manager, its when they had Robbie earnshsw (arrogant twat)

Anyway I was working the bar, Robson and nigel Pearson were there, drinking lots of bud, and sorting out the team I presume

They both left a little worse for wear, so much show they left the line up they were going to use on a piece of paper on the table

I was very tempted to call Blackburn and give them a heads up

I didn’t see Peters, so I’ll bow to the judgement of those who saw him. Fair enough on Spackman, though I always thought he looked excellent at Liverpool. Bruce and Spackman both beat Peters hands down on domestic achievement. Bruce is widely acknowledged as one of, if not the best players never to get a cap.

I didn’t see Peters, so I’ll bow to the judgement of those who saw him. Fair enough on Spackman, though I always thought he looked excellent at Liverpool. Bruce and Spackman both beat Peters hands down on domestic achievement. Bruce is widely acknowledged as one of, if not the best players never to get a cap.

Peters, party piece, was to appear, from no where, into the box, bit like 'an over load' in todays money, whilst putting a lot of leg work for 90% of the game. Very effective, played with his brain, but no great ball player.
Bruce on the other hand, was a bustling, rough, ball at any cost player, a reaction, hot headed player, always not far from a referee's punishment, who played for Manure.
Joe Shaw did at least get called up as reserve for a cap, and touring parties for none representative games, maybe Steve did also, I'm afraid I have no knowledge of that.
What ever, its all subjective, could be Joe Mercer could eclipse them all.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say I met one of our best managers this week, when I attending an evening with Dave Bassett at the Kenwood Hotel. Still on good form at 76.

I managed to have a quick chat and said "So Dave, it's 5th May 1990, we're winning 4-2 at Leicester at half-time.... who was the zone man?"
He had a chuckle and told me it was a big cock-up between him and Geoff Taylor. I said never mind, it didn't turn out too badly!

I think you can put Alan Woodward in the same bracket as Bruce you know Geordie, it was a mortal sin he was never picked for England.

Steve Bruce the manager version was dealt a crap hand as he had no transfer funds when he was our manager I think he signed the I’ll fated Michael Twiss from Man Utd on loan as for Billy McEwan well he had a hard act to follow after Porterfield and again we were skint after spending good money on wages on Withe,McNaughton, Eves, Thompson and Burridge as per usual feast of famine at the Lane
