Indeed. At his most useful he picks up the ball in front of the back four, often in tight situations, and moves it on to players in space. It allows passing moves to build and other players to receive the ball in positions where they can play to their own strengths.

Stuart McCall used to do a similar job for us, and I hoped Britton would do the same. Unfortunately he wasn't used correctly. I think he's a superb footballer wasted and then discarded by inferior SUFC managers.

Completely agree JohnDenver, I recall learning we'd signed Britton and thinking what a coup to have an intelligent midfielder who could orchestrate between defence and attack. I think he's now more of a squad player for the Swans, but still effective, and as you mentioned, it was only the poor judgement of united managers that couldn't employ the tactical nous to use him in the most effective way. LB did the right thing in returning to Wales, and he's proved what a decent player he's always been.

Every player who has ever signed for us, have always become a better footballer after they leave us with the benefit of hindsight.

Met Brian Howard at the Wembley Premier Inn after the Burnley PO final. Nice guy. Game me his boots. Size 6

I know I'm in the minority but I think it's the Emperor's New Clothes with Britton. His entire game is standing between the penalty area and the centre circle and playing non threatening 10 yard passes. He never scores and never assists. He can't tackle and is easy to tackle. I have never been able to understand his allure.

Howard was one of a few players who scored a blinder for Barnsley at Anfield and built an entire career around it. Charlie Adam? DJ Campbell?

I can recall several good or great players not scoring often, Bobby Moore being a prime example. Inspite of your simplified analysis, Britton seems to appeal to consecutive managers, a bit like Doyle for us. The 'bland' game you describe is actually one way of dictating tempo, or taking the game by the collar enabling more threatening players to do what they do best. Our loss I'm afraid, as Swansea's rise testifies.

He had a purple patch, making a name off a goal against Liverpool and a decent run of form.

He was fantastic at hiding and marking himself out of games, while people made excuses that we "hoofed over his head".

Two things I'll remember fondly, his goal at Reading and The One 's hatred of him :D

Do not mention his name to me again;). Absolutely useless.

Unfortunately his days were as frequent as England world cup wins

Brian Howard was a big fish in a small pool at Barnsley , and was suited to there football .Unfortunately we did not play Howard to his strengths and his commitment was poor . To say he was crap at the lane is being polite . In saying that ,we even made Britton look a poor player.

UTB.
