Indeed. At his most useful he picks up the ball in front of the back four, often in tight situations, and moves it on to players in space. It allows passing moves to build and other players to receive the ball in positions where they can play to their own strengths.
Stuart McCall used to do a similar job for us, and I hoped Britton would do the same. Unfortunately he wasn't used correctly. I think he's a superb footballer wasted and then discarded by inferior SUFC managers.
Has that happened??
Completely agree JohnDenver, I recall learning we'd signed Britton and thinking what a coup to have an intelligent midfielder who could orchestrate between defence and attack. I think he's now more of a squad player for the Swans, but still effective, and as you mentioned, it was only the poor judgement of united managers that couldn't employ the tactical nous to use him in the most effective way. LB did the right thing in returning to Wales, and he's proved what a decent player he's always been.
He was really good at pointing to other people to pass the ball too when we were in possession

I know I'm in the minority but I think it's the Emperor's New Clothes with Britton. His entire game is standing between the penalty area and the centre circle and playing non threatening 10 yard passes. He never scores and never assists. He can't tackle and is easy to tackle. I have never been able to understand his allure.
He had a purple patch, making a name off a goal against Liverpool and a decent run of form.
He was fantastic at hiding and marking himself out of games, while people made excuses that we "hoofed over his head".
Two things I'll remember fondly, his goal at Reading and The One 's hatred of him![]()
Unfortunately his days were as frequent as England world cup wins
