Those who are old enough seem to have erased the fears that the names Agana and Deane once stirred in them; though the fears were real enough at the time

Bibbedy bobbedy boo.....

"And now... a word on that yellow shirt. That was United's away kit from 1989 until 1991 - an acidic shade of fluorescent yellow that mimicked the high-viz jackets worn by football ground stewards; if you squinted just a little, it seemed as though we had a team of 50 at least, ringing the pitch and threatening 360 degrees of sporting devastation."

Brilliant.

truely awsome, thank you for convaying me down a very pleasent memory (BDTB)lane, /me hums banana boat song

Posted about my memories of the Bassett era last night. This just confirms it as real. Not some made up marketing spin.

Pretty sure I saw Deano playing against us for Donny at Belle Vue just before we signed him - or was it a cup match?

Don't think we've had a striker like it since and certainly not a strike pairing like Deane and Agana.

I don't know if it was more luck or judgement but our scouting system in those days seemed capable of finding a few gems for peanuts. And our coaches seemed adept at improving and getting the best out of our players.

I have two signed shirts at home. One is Ronaldinho's Brazil shirt and the other is Deanos... If I had to get rid of one it would be the Brazilian show pony. Deano's without doubt my favourite player as I think most Blades my 'generation' would say.

I don't think our scouting system found Deane. I'm pretty sure Bassett said that he went to watch Donny to have a look at another player and spotted something in Brian Deane. I think he paid £40,000 for him

Leeds United let Deane slip though their fingers, too. He used to train with their juniors but wasn't considered good enough to be signed up to their Academy (or whatever it was called in those days). A former coach described him as being like 'Bambi on ice'. Doncaster gave him his chance. The rest is history.

Not sure if Deano was playing but we *did* play Donny at Belle Vue in the FA Cup on 11th Dec 1988 - my only visit to that shining edifice - we won 3-1

Yes I'm pretty sure it was 40k. If you look at the Bassett team it was full of relative nobodies. We were skint and getting poor crowds but we seemed to have the knack of finding players in the lower leagues and developing them. Warnock had that ability to a degree, though with the amount of signings he made by the law of averages a few had to come off! And he was fortunate to have some good young players already at the club.

Just seems that a succession of managers since haven't had this ability and it's now that we need a manager/scouts who can do this or we are screwed..

Time will tell if Speedo has this particular skill in his locker. If he doesn't then I suspect he'll be out on his arse.

Remember going to that cup game. Just had a feeling it was a pre-season match on sunny evening or maybe a county cup match if it was still going then.

I believe the player Bassett went to watch was Rufus Brevett, but signed Deano instead. If I remember rightly, Deane was often substitute for Donny and hadn't played that many games. Bit like Agana at Watford.

As the article states very well, Deane was absolute hero at BDTBL.

I once got into an arguement in a pub in Darlington with two Leeds fans who were sat at their table nearby talking about Leeds and slagging Deane off so I just had to get up and tell them they were talking rubbish.
Never do anything like that ever, and doubt I'd do it for any other player from the past and certainly not present!

Jock Bryson was a major find, playing in the third div with god knows how many assists and goals (don't have a VCR anymore but 100 years 100 goals he scored a shitload to get us off to a flyer) then carrying on to the top flight. Remember him hitting the bar at anfield and then both posts against forest in THAT game, scoring (did he get two?) Deano grabbed the winner and my first pitch invasion as though we'd won the league rather than our first game! The game has changed but a legend in my eyes.

Aye he got two and was denied his hat-trick by the shot that hit both posts. Deano scored the winner from just about the same move, I think.

I noticed a player called Bryson is banging the goals in in Scotland. Not sure if its his son.

1988-1994, my first six years as a Unitedite and still the best. Remember getting picked on at school every Monday morning in that autumn/winter 1990 by the Arsenal and Spurs fans and having them shut up by that run just after New Years.

I bumped into Jock in the club shop a few months afer he'd arrived. I think his family had come down to Sheffield to see him and he was after one of the official pictures of himself from the the shop to give them. I'm not sure if he was more embarrassed or angy when a certain member of the club's commercial team insisted he paid for it.

A limited player in some ways but who proved how effective you can be for the team if you work hard on your game and do the simple things well. He looked knackered from the first minute though. Could be wrong but think his family were farmers.

> an acidic shade of fluorescent yellow
