Tyrese Campbell has scored as many goals for Sheffield United in 15 games over half a season, as Rhian Brewster has in 4 and a half years. Comparing the 2 seems insane based on that..
I like Brewster. He does seem like a genuinely nice lad, he's obviously popular around the dressing room and Wilder clearly either likes him or is desperately searching for one last chance for him to come good, and not be the worst signing the club has ever made (based on stats, not on attitude and effort).
Personally I think giving him another deal, on whatever terms, would be insane. Showing flashes of quality now he's fit (for how long?) does not cancel out the previous 4 years. Yes he's been horrendously unlucky with injuries, but some players are just injury prone. Whatever division we're in next season, I would rather see the wages be used on a new player, preferably one with a decent fitness record. It'd look pretty stupid to offer Brewster a new deal, get it signed, and then he gets injured again the following week and sits out the majority of his new deal.
If he bangs in 10 goals in the remaining 14 games, then maybe reconsider, but I genuinely can't see that happening. I think he's had too many injuries to ever become the player he was touted as 5 years ago. Not his fault, but football is a business, and we need to forget about sentimentality. If we go up, it will take a fucking miracle to survive, we will need a squad of fit, healthy, quality players to stand even the tiniest chance. The gulf has only widened since we last had a successful PL season.
Thanks for trying Rhian, I mean that sincerely. I think he probably loves the club, and I'd imagine he would like to stay. But for me we wish him all the best, and hope he finds a club where he can have some success, maybe in L1.
